the missus would definitely veto any vita purchase

I got around it by buying her a nice sparkly ring of equivalent value. She was far too busy cooing over the new ring to notice that my PSP had 'grown'.

Cosmic thing was, I chose the ring without paying attention to price and it ended up costing ONE PENCE more than the Vita. I thought that was cool.

I'm looking at the wi-fi model but I have no idea how well the 3G works in the UK, just looking for impressions.
Dunno, I guess it would vary depending on the mobile coverage in your area. I skipped the 3G model because it's no use for gaming and I have an iPhone for everything else.

No, but I grabbed the wi-fi model.

It's pretty hot.

Oh yeah, WiFi Vita club assemble!

I love mine. It's seriously the best handheld gaming device I've ever bought. Between this and the Kindle I got for Christmas, I've once again become a slut for dedicated devices.

Though I still love my 4S.

haha unfortunately I'm a poor student and don't have any money for that.

Ah well, I've got higher priorities than a Vita I suppose

Freewheelin: you're right, it's a fiver

What would you use the 3G function for? Answer that question and you know whether you should get a 3G model or not.

Yeh that's the only thing holding me back. The answer at the moment is 'nothing', with the proviso that the 'near' functionality is absolutely awesome and worth the price of entry alone.

: O

"Sparkly"?

Engagement ring?!

I suspect you might spend more than the price of a Vita on an engagement ring, so probably not.

You cannot game over 3G. That'd be the only point to a 3G Vita ever.

Yeah, it's a pre-engagement ring, I guess. It's the last ring I'll buy her before her engagement ring. You guess correctly, the actual engagement ring will require a small loan, she likes her shiny things.

High 5. I love my missus dearly but she ain't difficult to distract.

Do you ever worry in buying pre-engagements rings that she might take it the wrong way and think it's an actual engagement ring and this is it he's proposing omg?

But dude, a loan? Just save for a few months. If you have the disposable income for both a launch-price Vita and a sparkly ring, you shouldn't tie yourself to a loan for the real deal.

We have a pretty good understanding about where we are in our relationship, tbh. She knows that we're right on the verge of an engagement but she also knows that when I propose to her, it will most likely be on the Charles Bridge in Prague or up the Eiffel Tower (they're 2 very significant locations in our relationship). If I'm buying her jewelry on a wet Tuesday in England, it's just a present. The size of the diamond would instantly clue her in too.

The reason I'd take out a loan is so that she wouldn't notice me siphoning money out of the account. I'd pay it back shortly afterwards.

I've just realised that she'll see the loan go into the bank. Bugger.

Got a close mate with money to spare who you can borrow the money from? Show him your bank statement so he knows you're good for it.

But also you should really have your own personal account to compliment your joint account. Wouldn't even need the loan then. But I'm guessing at this point your wages go straight into the joint account so it'll be ridiculously hard to pull this off.

Wow, could you propose to me please??? Or at least give my boyfriend some tips, he really hasn't got a clue.
Give him tips yourself or get a new boyfriend. Communication.

Open up a new current account with a different bank and use that for the loan, once you pay it off after the engagement, close it. Win.

I have some places pegged out already, was going to do it in NYC last November but it seemed cliched in the end. London and Dublin both have places that mean something to us.

Hint to him about places that mean something to you both, that is unless you just want to marry Dave?

I have no idea why anyone would want a Vita.

Who has the time to play a full, 'hardcore' game on the go? Who gets on a bus and thinks, "I'd sure love a story driven Adventure game like Uncharted right about now"?

The entire concept baffles me. If I want to play Fifa I'll do it in a chair, in front of a television, when I'm at home. Sure, there are slight exceptions, such as long train journeys, but they don't happen frequently enough to justify a £200+ expense.

I'd rather just flick birds into wood for a couple of minutes.

Get the loan elsewhere? (And I don't mean Wonga) Set up a new personal account just for that purpose if necessary, or do it through a very good friend or family member.

I'm kind of lucky on that front in that I knew it would be more than my life's worth to pick the engagement ring myself. ;)

Will you marry me? (Let me help you out: No you fucking won't. I'm an overgrown teenager with more style and less baseball caps, you can do better).

Get your chap to grow up with 3 sisters. That'll get him pretty clued up in the ways of women-folk. If this is impractical due to the passage of time, I'll think of something else.

Edit: I just realised, it's the 29th. You have to propose to me.
Anybody who doesn't want to marry Dave is a chump lacking in taste.
Were I the type to use image macro's, I'd insert one here reflecting that I felt your comment was too kind. :)

Great idea. I'll set up a separate account and then afterwards, I'll use it as a rainy day LEGO fund or something.

Word of warning to UK GAF, i know you're all probably a lot smarter than me and realise that borrowing from WONGA is a bad idea but to anyone who's thinking about it, don't. I borrowed £200 from them to pay my council tax and missed the payment, the sneaky fuckers took £900 from my bank £10 at a time over 4 days with no warning. I'm in the shit with the bank now who i owe £700 to with them taking £5 out a day for an unplanned overdraft. Don't start work for another month.

For me, it bridges the gap between my portable (iPhone 4) and my consoles / PC. In our new house I've moved the consoles and TV to the top floor (attic conversion / mezzanine). It's fucking awesome for when I want to sit and focus 100% on gaming but it's two floors up from the room where the missus spends most of her time. Sometimes I want to spend time with her but she'll either be playing Skyrim or watching Dog The Bounty Hunter so the living room setup is occupied. Under those circumstances I used to play my PSP and I've now migrated to the Vita.

Last night I got in before her, cracked open a beer and put an hour into GT5. I then switched to Motorstorm RC for a bit. When she came in I went down to chill with her, picked the Vita up and it had already synced my progress from earlier (on Motorstorm) and I could pick it up and carry on from where I was. Felt good, man.

I can't really see the appeal of playing one on the go either, but I'm sure it's awesome for those that want to.

While I agree you shouldn't use them and their ilk unless you need to, that right there is the issue.

Edit: and £900 for £200? Dispute the payments with your bank, claim they are fraudulent and the bank take the hit I think (I had that with BT when they took too much money).

I had the money in the next day, i miscalculated my payment date. They did not give a fuck.

I did dispute it but my bank said that i had to sort it with WONGA, i harassed WONGA for a while to no avail and i'm in no financial state to take it any further.

And seriously, council tax? Takes ages for local councils to do anything. You'll get a ton of "final notice we mean it this time" letters before you'll get actual trouble from them.

Yep, when I was a poor student we used to pay it when we got a summons, you would ring them and say "well can I pay you £100 a month (or whatever the monthly payments were)" and they would invariably just say yes.

That's not true, i missed a payment last year in October and they made me pay the quarter in one go. When i couldn't pay that they took me to court and said they will bump the amount up to a grand and send the bailiffs round. I was struggling for money so got the last bit off WONGA.

I own my house too so there is the real risk of them taking it off me.

Wait, what? the Council being so severe seems odd but your house? unless they have a secured loan on it they cannot touch it, only your mortgage company can do that, they don't have a second charge so they cannot.

Wouldn't be surprised if we / I were to dumb or lazy to work around it, it was 2000 ish so no idea if we were supposed to.

and now I feel old.

When they live in a shared house and paid all the utility's, one of my house-mates wasn't a student either.
Only one who should have been paying council tax was that one non-student housemate, and if he let the council know the exact details he wouldn't have had to pay the full amount, either.

That's not legal as far as I know. You can take your case to the regulator if you have the time and get the money back.

Generally borrowing money from the payday lenders is a bad idea and I'm happy the government is looking into it. Another area the government should look at is daily charges for unauthorised overdrafts. A friend of mine went £11 over his agreed overdraft of £8000 while he was out of the country and he didn't get paid until two weeks later but the bank charged him £6 for every day that he was above his limit, so for 15 days he was charged £90 for going over by £11. It works out to about a 19,000% APR. Disgusting charges.

government should limit APR but payday loan companies are better than loan sharks who these people might alternatively look to

What healthy relationships you both have :D

I've been in unhealthy relationships. They don't generally involve light-hearted frivolous spending. As Meadows said, there's give and take. I'm sure as hell not buying an iPad 3 now. Well, not yet ;)

Trust me, when it matters, my lady is as sharp as a tack. She takes none of my nonsense an I'm a better man for it.

any good relationship is a constant negotiation, she's just as likely to get a purchase of an expensive handbag vetoed by me as I am of a Vita. She's probably right, we're struggling a bit at the moment so a Vita isn't a high priority.

Sorry, don't take me seriously! Although I thought you were around university age for some reason, didn't realise you're actually at the stage where you have to be sensible with money jointly!

Here's a question for people on credit cards: I've basically never had one. I have a student current account that's never been in overdraft, my monthly contract gets paid each time without issues, but what's about it, so I probably have little, if any credit. What's the best route for me to go down in getting a credit card - stick with my bank and get a student one?

I'm not really looking to do anything other than put stuff on it and pay it off every month with my debit card, so I don't need huge borrowing limits, I just want to build up some credit.

Sorry to you too, was only kidding about. I'm the king of unhealthy relationships, so I'm really not one to talk.

I am at uni (only two lectures left in all of my degree!) but we've been together for 2 years and lived together for nearly that long (we were housemates and now live on our own with each other, which we love btw) and we're both very committed to each other and love each other very much.

We can't get into unsustainable debt and can't afford too many luxuries beyond shopping at Waitrose and eating out every now and again, so we're very careful about how much we spend.

Hey chaps and chappettes.

What is the current state of pre-nuptual agreements here in the UK? I've always liked the idea and I've just wondered whether they stick or whether people weasel out of them.
