‘Borderlands 2’ from 2K Games/Take 2 debuts at the top of the All Formats Chart this week with the biggest launch so far in 2012, toppling the previous best, ‘Mass Effect 3’ by over 4,000 sales.

The original, launched back in W43 2009 only made it to No7 when it was released on XB360 and PS3 (the PC version came out the following week). The sequel’s launch week has outdone the original by more than 4 to 1 with the Xbox 360 version the big winner, accounting for 71% of sales compared to 22% on PS3 and 7% on PC. The games industry has finally got into gear after a slow summer with ‘F1 2012’ and ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2013’ also new this week at No2 and No3 respectively. Last week’s No1 ‘Sleeping Dogs’ (+1%) has to settle for No4 ahead of ‘Lego Batman 2’ (-19%) which also makes way for the new releases, down 2 places to No5. Sony’s ‘LittleBigPlanet PS Vita’ has the biggest sales week for a non-hardware launch week Vita title, debuting at No6, ahead of ‘New Super Mario Bros. 2’ (-13%) at No7 and ‘Tekken Tag Tournament 2’ (-51%) which drops 6 places to No8.

Former No1 ‘Guild Wars 2’ (+11%) holds on to a Top 10 position at No9, while Take 2 are the only publisher to have 2 titles in the Top 10 thanks to ‘Max Payne 3’ (+34%) being a non-mover at No10.

A lot of NDS titles I've never heard of ;p

Edit: Oh already fixed. Good for the LBP developers though as I've heard it's a really good effort.

The first Vita game in like three months and it limps in at 10. Surprising considering the TV ads, must have cost a pretty penny.

It was cheaper to download then to buy at retail, at least here in Germany. Until amazon.de dropped the price below the download price 2 days after release.

Going by previous weeks, that's around 6000-ish units, which isn't too hot if it completely drops from the top 40 next week like the latest Vita releases have.

Good enough man! I wasn't expecting it to chart at all.

I wonder how effective the ads have been. It's the first time I've ever seen a Vita ad (software or hardware) and I've also had two people in the office ask me if I'm buying 'one of those new things' (meaning the Vita itself!). Funny thing is, there's been one on my desk more than once and it appears nobody noticed.

Poor Vita :(

Pretty crazy splits for Borderlands 2 between 360 and PS3 considering the series was multiplatform from the start.

Why did you think it wouldn't chart when even the likes of Unit 13 and Resistance have already charted.

The ads seem pretty effective to me... simple too. Exactly the kind of ad they should go for imo. Vita's gonna be fine.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yes, I've been surprised seeing some Vita ads for LBP. Finally ( I saw them on MTV Rock ).

Because I expected most early adopters to have sold / traded in their Vita by now. Also seems like the kind of game that is better off digital so it's always accessible.

I don't know about 'fine' but I don't see it being discontinued any time soon. That's enough for me, I'll buy anything of interest that they put out. Absolutely love the machine.

Not surprised about Borderlands 2's huge numbers. Well deserved. I'm surprised at the legs of Sleeping Dogs, but incredibly happy for that game. Also happy that NSMB2 never managed to hit #1. Work harder for my money, Nintendo.

PAL Charts - Week 38, 2012 |OT| Of Guessing What Next Weeks Number One Will Be

PES is dead in Europe now. I think they have hurt the franchise so much in the last 5 years that it seems there is no way back.

I've held the view for a couple of years now that Konami should think about re-branding the franchise. Maybe with a return to ISS or something else, or possibly even ISS one year and PES the next, maybe even with separate engines for separate play styles (realism vs arcade) and even separate developers if absolutely necessary.

It's a shame as I hear this years game is very good (and I do intend on trying it myself eventually) but the series has lost a monumental amount of good will over the course of this generation. I know lots and lots of people who have stopped bothering entirely.

What are you talking about? Dead? Based on what, the UK market? Even when PES was amazing UK market was still dominated by Fifa. I'm pretty sure PES 2013 will end up selling better than 2012.

Is that week over week or year over year?

Might be a good sign that Borderlands is putting an end to this long national nightmare of poor software sales.

Annual football fiesta FIFA 13 has sold a million copies during its first week on sale in the UK.

It becomes the fourth game in history to do this, following Call of Duty titles Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2 and 3.

Video game sales jumped by 196 per cent in the past seven days. FIFA 13 accounted for 71 per cent of all games sold and 80 per cent of all revenue from game sales - both of these figures are higher than last year.

Last week also saw the release of new hardware in the shape of Sony's new super slim PlayStation 3. The 500GB monster gave PS3 sales a 138 per cent boost on last week, and accounted for 37 per cent of all PS3s sold.

So I guess no one cared about the 12Gb lol.

In hitting these incredible sales, FIFA 13 betters the week one numbers of FIFA 12 by 27 per cent in units and 31 per cent in value. Again, remarkable in the current in the current climate.

Its success drove the overall market to a 196 per cent week-on-week gain in unit sales and a 282 per cent jump in revenue. FIFA 13 claimed 71 per cent of the UK’s total video game unit sales last week and 80 per cent of its revenue.

The biggest achievement of all, perhaps, is that the UK market actually bettered the same week performance of 2011 – up by 11 per cent in units and 18 per cent in revenue.

Video game sales jumped by 196 per cent in the past seven days. FIFA 13 accounted for 71 per cent of all games sold and 80 per cent of all revenue from game sales -

DAMN! Well at least something is doing well. Also not a horrible drop for LBP, but at that space the numbers are probably pretty tiny.

It’s time for the market to explode, as EA’s ‘FIFA 13' debuts at No 1.

It joins the select club of titles that have sold more than 1m units in their opening week, the others being Call of Duty series Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 & 3. ‘FIFA 13’ outsold previous best ‘FIFA 12’ by +27% in units and +31% by revenue (based on opening week sales). Week 39 total market units climb 196% over the previous week (+282% by revenue) to become by far the biggest week of the year so far and the curtain-raiser for the much hoped for Q4 revival.
‘FIFA 13’ accounted for an astonishing 71% of all units and 80% of all entertainment software revenue this week (up from 62%/72% for FIFA 12 last year), revealing an even greater polarisation of sales towards triple A product. Finally, in a comparison between week 39-12 vs. week 39-11, this week is up 11% in units and 18% in revenue. Last week’s No1 ‘Borderlands 2’ drops to No2 (-60%) and Codemasters also drop one place to No3 with ‘F1 2012’ (-38%).

But it’s not just a FIFA festival this week as Activision Blizzard’s ‘World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria’ debuts at No4, a mid-week release from Tuesday 25th September. Also debuting this week is Ubisoft’s innovative ‘Rocksmith’ at No7, Tecmo Koei’s ‘Dead or Alive 5’ at No11, Rovio/Activision’s ‘Angry Birds Trilogy’ at No16 and Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5 Academy Edition’ at No17. In the console hardware world Sony’s PS3 ‘Super Slim’ 500GB debuts this week and immediately sees PS3 hardware sales rocket 138% over last week – the 500GB variant accounted for 37% of all PS3’s sold.

Good to see LittleBigPlanet on Vita outsold EA's dinky update for FIFA 13 to stay top of that format's chart in the U.K. Even among the small user base, and desperate for games, they aren't buying into EA's con job.

Mildly surprised by the Borderlands 2 split. Was the first one as extreme? Or is 360 friendly UK making up the bulk of the sales?
