Square-Enix’s ‘Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition’ debuts at No1 as a next-gen PS4/XB One re-launch of last years ‘Tomb Raider’ re-boot (debuted in week 10, 2013 as what turned out to be the fourth biggest week 1 seller on the All Formats in 2013).

EA’s ‘FIFA 14’ (-4%) drops to No2 and is less than 500 sales behind. Given the scarcity of releases at this time of year, ‘FIFA 14’ will be hoping to re-take No1 next week which would give the title entrance to the small elite club of products that have aquired 10 weeks at No1 on the All Formats Chart (currently 10 titles).

The rest of the Top 10 remains pretty much unchanged, with Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ down 1 place at No3 (+19%), EA’s ‘Battlefield 4’ down 1 place at No4 (-5%) and Warner’s ‘LEGO Marvel Super Heroes’ also down 1 place to No5 (+11%).

The numbers mason....

I kid, I guess NE is New Entry?

Tomb Raider is selling well, especially for a game that's already been out once before at a much lower price....
Oh wait is that "spin"?

Based on the sentiment in the other thread I expected a lot worse than a 10k difference. Game's sales were pretty blah on both platforms.

I'm surprised Tomb Raider made it to number 1 considering how little new content was added. I reckon it's due to the lack of new games for PS4/XBO at the moment meaning any decent new release is going to get some baseline sales.

The continued commercial power shown by the retail version of Minecraft:X360 Edition is simply staggering.

It deserves it, of course, but to remain so high in the sales charts for such a lengthy period of time...

I wonder how long it took the WiiU to disappear from these charts. Were they charting after the first few launch weeks?

PS4, PS3, 360 and XBone all have a healthy presence in the charts. Good stuff.

It's a damned good game and there are plenty of people that never got around to playing it on the old consoles. I'm pleased to see it at number one.

Far Cry 3 next, please.

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Seeing as PS4 hardly has a userbase to speak of at this point, would the dominance of PS4 titles in the top 10 be an indication of software sales for other formats being low?

It's difficult to overstate how terribly the Wii U performed.

Launch week looked like this:

11 (__) WiiU Nintendo Land (Nintendo)
14 (__) WiiU New Super Mario Bros. U (Nintendo)
16 (__) WiiU Zombi U (Ubisoft)

The following week, only NLand and NSMBU charted. After that it was just NLand, but that even that dropped out of the charts before the end of the year (less than a month after launch). This post is a good place to start as it has link to the relevant period at the bottom.

The only problem with Tomb Raider is that playing it has given me an unquenchable thirst for PS4 up-ports of my favourite PS360 games. It looks and plays so damn well.

No problem at all. I've no idea why people are so down on ports.

They fill out a console's library. Why shouldn't people play a better version of a game that they enjoyed?

Any popular last-gen game that had a PC version is leaving money on the table by not porting to XB1/PS4.

Nintendo Land was missing by Week 52 of 2012. That was the game that continued to chart for the Wii U after its release.

Man...

And is it me or is the 3DS situation also kinda dire. Never seen a country give the collective FU to a hardware developer like this before. Even with all it's faults the UK showed some kind of mercy to the PS3. This is brutal.

Can you even buy the PC version as a boxed release or is it just via the official site? I can see some people be weary of that and preferring to go for the boxes release.

Attach rates are pretty bad across the world for 3DS but poor pricing, lack of budget titles lead to first party stealing the spotlight and there is only so many times you can buy Animal Crossing.

Glad to see Ryse is still in the top 40. Hope this game can be sold more than 1 million. I really expect there will be a sequel to this game. Love it from my deep heart.

I didn't even notice until I looked and saw that the highest charting game on the 3DS is at 27 and there are only 4 games in the top 40. Compare this chart to Japan if you want to see just how different the markets are lol

3DS is odd, it sells great compared to all the other hardware in the UK, but the attach rate must be dire.

Seems like everyone buys it for one game (e.g. Pokémon, or Animal Crossing, etc.) and then never buys anything else.

Must be frustrating for Nintendo, but they are not competitive on software pricing. Their first-party stuff usually retails at £34.99 and maintains that price.

A price-sensitive family could pick up a £79 2DS if they shop around. Then they have to pay half the amount of that console for one Nintendo game.

Not to the best of my knowledge - which is a little surprising, given the exceeding popularity of the 360 retail release.

Aye, the 3DS sells hardware, but the owners don't buy games. Well, their parents don't, anyway.

Can't say as I'm too sad to see Nintendo getting the cold shoulder, lord knows they've given it to us often enough.

27k for the top seller in the UK seems awfully low
At the end of January when everyone is skint, I'm not too surprised.

Wow reading that thread you linked Fifa got pipped from top spot by ~500 units just like this year, scary.

Yeah, this is the problem.

3DS software never discounts and even pre-owned is uber expensive. People in the UK are pretty used to hefty discounts on software.

Aside from DS, 3DS's current tie ratio should be quite on par with past Nintendo handhelds. Handhelds have always had lower attach rates than home consoles. Still, this doesn't excuse the currently mediocre performance of 3DS software in UK.

PS4 looking mighty healthy in the UK! 9 titles in the chart, very impressive!

About Tomb Raider, this is how the original did

Hmm. Series of extrapolations, ergo presumably quite a lot of error.

Week 11 -14% = <10.6K

FIFA PS3 SKU 33% <3.5K > BLOPS2 PS3 SKU 43%
=> BLOPS2 all formats <8.12K > Sims University life (-57%)

=> Sims University life first week < 18.88 > Tomb Raider PC first week (3%)

Tomb Raider (All formats) Week 10 <629.3K
Tomb Raider (All formats) Week 11 <176.2K
LTD <805.5K

First week;

Xbox 360 (50)
PS3 (42)
PC (3)

Second week;

Xbox 360 (54)
PS3 (43)
PC (2)

At the end of January when everyone is skint, I'm not too surprised.

Friday was the last day of Jan and thus the 1st payday since Xmas for a lot of people, you'd think there'd be more spending rather than the opposite.

If this had came out 2 weeks ago, I could agree...not this particular weekend.

27k for the top seller in the UK seems awfully low

Actually, 27k is way above average during slow sales periods. These two new systems are moving a lot of software.

Those estimates aren't helpful since we know that during all 2013 Tomb Raider sold below 777k units.

5 best-selling games of 2013 in the UK:

1. Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two Interactive) - 3,670,234
2. FIFA 14 (Electronic Arts) - 2,656,763
3. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Activision Blizzard) - 1,991,994
4. Battlefield 4 (Electronic Arts) - 838,869
5. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Ubisoft) - 776,888

Tomb Raider
PS4 (Definitive Edition) (69%) - 18,900
One (Acceptable Edition) (31%) - 8,500

This is really poor for the top selling game, especially when there is almost a million next gen consoles in the UK. What is the weekly average for the month of January in previous years?

For the given week, I would expect software sales to come in around 350K - 400K units.

Then 7% of all software for the UK that week would have been TR:DE (i.e. 1 in every 14 units of software sold across all platforms, including PC).

In terms of value, those units are definitely at the high end (Xbox One and PS4 are averaging £48 per unit), and that will boost the revenue significantly over last year.

The results so far this year are positive, and I believe much of that has to do with the XB1 and PS4 software helping keep average prices high.

The question really is what's going on March - August. Although, if things take a bad turn in February, then, yes we start wondering about it...
