Thief |OT| Hide your valuables, Garrett is back in town

Used a GMG code to pre-order a few days ago, I just had to. I'm really itching to see what it's really about and if it's at least a good stealth game. I mean if that's what we get out of this fiasco I'm fine with that.

So yea, I'm getting a bit excited.

The loot highlight being able to be turned off almost made me pre-order this game immediately. I'll still probably pick it up at some point as long as gaf impressions aren't too harsh.

"Not nearly as bad as Deus Ex: Invisible War."

"An order of magnitude less disastrous than Aliens: Colonial Marines."

"Considerably less offensive than Duke Nukem Forever."

My review predictions.

So let's talk difficulty mods. Since Thief may turn out to be a single-playthrough type of game, I'm going to try to knock out as many achievements in that run as possible. One achievement is for beating the game with a certain amount of difficulty points, and while we don't know the point values for each mod yet, I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on which will enhance or hinder the quintessential "Thief" experience. Here are mine below:

Classic Thief Mods
* Chapter Save Only - Let's face it, savescumming was what the classic games were all about. Plus, with an achievement for not knocking anyone out all game, this one is just asking for trouble. No go.
* No Focus - Focus looks like it would suck the very soul from stealth gameplay, so removing it is a no-brainer.
* Stealth Takedowns Only - A warrior Garrett is a non-canon Garrett, definitely enabled.
* No Reticle - This just seems like it would be a pain in the ass rather than an adding an interesting challenge, but probably manageable. Would enable if I needed the points.

Legendary Thief Mods
* Specialty Arrows Only - Depends on what the others are. If the rest are all combat-oriented, they definitely would not be needed.
* No Resources - I don't plan on getting into combat and Focus would be disabled anyway, so this option is fine.
* It Hurts Not - Savescum means this is whatever. I think during my Thief career I've taken more falling damage than from enemies anyway.
* Expensive Tools - Forcing you to be more judicious with your upgrades keeps you from being overpowered and lets you think about what you really need. Sounds good to me.
* Slowed Movement - Another option that seems more annoying than interesting. Yes, Garrett crawled in the classics, but that wasn't very fun. Thief could do with more kinetic pacing. I'd only enable this if I still needed points after No Reticle.

Ultimate Thief Mods
* Iron Man - Masochists only, at least when it comes to first playthrough. No thanks.
* No Upgrades - My inclination is to disable; while I want to have to earn my toys via Expensive Tools, it seems unfun to reject them entirely. If there are no good stealth tools though, it's an easy enable.
* No Kills or Knockouts - There's an achievement for this, so makes sense to enable.
* No Alerts - Everyone reloads rather than run from guards anyway.

What say you, old-schoolers? Anyone approaching the difficulty with a different sensibility?

Nice looking OT!
Still on the fence for this title, but it does look good. Never played any Thief before, so I don't know how it compares.

No because if its anything like Hitman Absolution, the game will be designed around the focus tested xray vision and other added game assists, and thus if you turn those off you are fucked. Theres nothing else in the game that conveys or explains what you need to do because the game is designed around those components. They are not optional in the grand scheme.

Got this pre-ordered on PS4 for £33.95, wasn't going to buy it but for that price I figure I can't say no. Been on the fence for a while and this will tide me over nicely until inFamous comes out and Lightning Returns drops in price.

Fantastic OT btw :)

Got my code from AMD today. So yeah, it ended up costing me $7.50 USD.

It's worth noting that focus essentially works like SIMPLE ART DESIGN did in the first game--that is, it breaks down interactive and non-interactive objects. In Thief, they simply didn't have stuff. So of, say, three objects in a room, that one object you saw was PROBABLY something you could interact. Highlighting basically lets them increase graphical fidelity while still maintaining the "oh, it's really obvious I can touch that thing" of the original games. I've never had a problem with it, and I kinda think anyone who does isn't being particularly thoughtful.

My Garrett fought things--heck, he killed every single zombie in The Bonehoard in about thirty seconds. I hate the notion that we have to ghost--some of my best memories come from trying to fight people and getting unexpected results.

I hate people who think that savescumming is somehow bad. Thief IS savescumming.

This was the game that almost got me to buy a PS4 until a read some no-very-favorable impressions. I don't know. I will wait

Custom Difficulty Settings
blog_customdiff_small.jpg

You can create your own custom difficulty level by toggling on any (or all!) of the following mods:
Base difficulty: easy, normal or hard

Classic Thief Mods
* Chapter Save Only: manual saves and checkpoint auto-saves are disabled.
* No Focus: the use of Focus is completely disabled and no Focus Points are earned.
* Stealth Takedowns Only: you cannot perform combat Takedowns and Takedowns from above.
* No Reticle: no aiming reticle is displayed when drawing the bow.

Legendary Thief Mods
* Specialty Arrows Only: only Blunt, Water, Fire and Rope Arrows are available.
* No Resources: food (health) and poppy flowers (Focus) are not consumable.
* It Hurts Not: if you take any damage, the mission is failed.
* Expensive Tools: the cost of arrows, tools, food and poppies is greatly increased.
* Slowed Movement: running and walking speeds are reduced.

Ultimate Thief Mods
* Iron Man: if you die or fail a mission, you lose your game and must restart from the beginning.
* No Upgrades: non-critical upgrades are disabled.
* No Kills or Knockouts: if a human or animal is killed or stunned, the mission is failed.
* No Alerts: if a human or animal detects you, the mission is failed.

PC version [made by Nixxes] also has TrueAudio [precise audio positioning of every sound source], Mantle rendering path, native 3D rendering, support for Eyefinity and glorious FOV slider.

All of this is very yes for me. Playing through Deadly Shadows again til this releases on Steam.

You can beat Hitman Absolution on a purist/Silent Assassination run. That aspect was the least of Absolution's problems.

I still retain my pessimistic outlook on Thief though. This way I can't be anything but pleasantly surprised.

Really don't know whether to get this on ps4 or PC. I'm a massive Trophy whore at the moment. But I'm pretty short on cash! Decisions decisions....

Day one baby!

Thank you based SimplyCDKeys

Really looking forward to it. Hard mode, no alarms, no kills, bring it! This game will join Dishonored and DE:HR in that regard. Buahahha. \m/

PS2 version shaping up really nicely. [/jokes]

Anyway, I'll be keeping a magically enhanced eye on this thread and its corresponding game. I'm about as cynical as they come regarding the reboot, but if it's going right to the top of my Summer Sale wishlist if it turns out to be a good game in its own right.
