You mean scraping spears, second chance, baby nails, and grass spamming? ;)
lol? How is Second Chance not legit for duels? It was standard.
Grass spamming in duels was the only annoying thing really, especially from hosts who had too much HP to be OHKOed from a backstab.
Ahaha, so many people bitched about the scraping spear. It wasn't a rarity to see people leap off of cliffs as soon as I whipped mine out.
I always laughed in pity whenever I saw one. Poor scrubs apparently don't realize how bad the weapon was.

No one's going to give a shit, but my biggest reason for opposing respec has nothing to do with gameplay implications and everything to do with roleplaying.

"Roleplaying in Dark Souls? I thought it was a min/maxer e-sport?"

It's not really something I can explain to people who don't RP. I roll a character to fit an archetype, and I abide by that archetype throughout the game and solve problems in a manner befitting that archetype...if that makes sense. If I start the game as a priest for example I'm not going to use magic, socialize with unsavory characters, invade the worlds of the innocent, etc. Some might view that as being a slave to convention but I've found that it makes subsequent playthroughs more rewarding. I actually feel like From designed the game to be played this way, and encourage roleplaying in a way that most RPGs don't via the covenant system.

I don't know. Let's look at a game that took the idea of respec and just ran wild with it - Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. A game I enjoyed quite a bit despite being easy as piss. You could respec for the first time a couple hours into the game, and afterwards you could do it with impunity. You can change from fighter to mage to thief to a combination of all three whenever your heart desires. Did it promote experimentation? Yes. But I felt it made my character transient - less of a character and more of an in-game avatar. A character who can just change their entire being at the drop of a hat isn't much of a character in my eyes.

I realize this criticism means jackshit to most of you, and that's fine. Also: "don't use it if you don't want to", which is true. I'm basically just outlining why I won't be using the feature, personally.
You are not alone. I totally make RP toobs too. That said, if the Soul Vessel is a once-per-playthrough item or something, I don't mind. It can allow one to fine tune a build without restarting over completely. I'll definitely still make tons of RP/themed characters again regardless.

Hey, a lot of people switch majors in college. I like to think that extends to the worlds of knights and wizards as well. I mean, sure, maybe your parents have been pressuring you to become a cleric your whole life, but if pyromancy is what you truly love, then pursue your dreams and forge your own destiny.

Man, you definitely have to play more games. I've seen this phenomena happening to many passionate Dark Souls' fans, thinking that those things are exclusive and nowhere else to be found in other titles.

You have a locked mindset and we won't be able to discuss the game objectively. It wouldn't matter if I posted a list of examples of many other games that taught the developers of Dark Souls how to do things right.

It is unfortunate.

They aren't exactly new ideas but i've never been so impressed with the execution.

Meanwhile (and I know you mention them), you can abandon covenants whenever you feel like it--and keep the spoils. There's no way that nonsense would fly in real life.

It's not a black and white issue obviously but depending on how the respeccing feature is implemented, builds basically can become temporary loadouts (Diablo 3), removing any sense of consequence for your actions.

I'd be okay with it if it is indeed a very, very rare (~once per playthrough) item in DS2. I'd call it semi-permanent thing if that's the case.

You won't be respeccing very often

You can ignore the Taurus Demons and go in the direction of the Capra Demon.

Or, use the hawk ring (best) or just a bow period to shoot them. That'll usually aggro them one at a time. Or use poison arrows and hawk ring to poison them from a distance if you're patient. Takes 3 arrows to poison...wait till it runs out, then 3 more arrows to poison them enough to where they'll die. That's the cheesy way to do it anyway. :)

No, how about you post your list and stow the Von Oben Rhetoric where the sun don't shine.

Because I would love to see it.

Clearly. Even though change was the entire reason so many people fell in love with the series in the first place.
Yeah and now they are afraid of moving from the status quo the first two games created. Besides, changes made to differentiate a new IP from existing ones are completely different than changes within an existing IP in player perception.

The change is for the better. The core gameplay mechanics stayed the same. Notions of 'importance' to rp or choices are as absurd as the actual importance of choice in the beggining class.

Peer pressure? No, thank you.

You should have posted your shopping list and call it a day tbh.

To those of you who are leaving long blog posts about your sacred roleplaying style, what were your thoughts about respecing in Demon's Souls? That didn't exactly break the game, did it?

I just don't get why you guys are being so very anal about it. If this game was truly about your decsions and consequences and all that garbage that some of you are spouting, then you wouldn't be able to create multiple characters. I wouldn't be able to experiement with a character, find nice weapons and armor, then decide to create another character and build up those stats for that play style I want to try out. Really, I shouldn't be able to do that if this game is truly about consequences and all that crap you guys are talking about. I'm PRESUMING this helps to alleviate the need for multiple characters (presuming, because I haven't played the game and don't have a detailed write up of how respecing is handled here). In all honesty, Dark Souls is incredibly easy once you understand how to play the game. I just started a new character a few days ago to have some fun and level up some stats and use different weapons than I did on my last play through and this game is piss easy this time around. It would have been nice if I could reorganize the stats on my last character, however I wouldn't have been able to experience the story, bosses and world again, so even if I could respec my character, I probably would have still just started a new one... very similar to what I did in Demon's Souls... the last one that you could respec in.

Not everyone is complaining about the RP aspects. In fact, it's not even the majority of those complaining. And you couldn't respec in Demon's Souls unless you count getting soul sucked by another player. But it wasn't anywhere near as convenient as simply being able to do it on your own. I'm not bothered too much by the majority of the announced changes and how they will affect Dark Souls 2.

What bothers me is the potential for even more nonsense in the next Souls game if these "toned down" and "accessible" changes increase sales in any meaningful way.

On a side note, does anyone else think it's kind of ridiculous that right before the mainstream/casual/handholding explosion hit, we had:

You can lose souls by getting soul sucked by another player, getting soul sucked by the 5-3 boss, or by death on invasion. None are incredibly convenient, but all are methods to respec if you want. I built a low level character in DeS, built him up then decided I wanted a certain set of armor and deleveled myself in a few hours (running off cliffs during invasions), then easily got the souls to build myself back up. It wasn't convenient, but it was respecing none the less and didn't take very long to do.

I doubt if From starts to butcher these games, though I understand your concern (I'm very concerned about the changes to backstabs and ripostes), simply because they've been making these kind of games for a while.

The Armored Core and King's Field games did well enough, but has any single title from either of those series sell even close to two million?

I don't know a lot, I've avoided most info, but I have got wind of the respec thing.

My thoughts?

In general, I'm strongly against the idea of respeccing. I feel like Dark Souls is a game about consequences and commitments and choices, whether it's at the micro level of choosing when to block or strong attack or backstab, or at the macro level of choosing points for strength or endurance. I think respeccing damages the overall feel of the game.

*THAT SAID*, if respeccing is rare or difficult, (for example, an item that's only available once ever in your playthrough) then it's not really that big a deal, and if it's the case that it is rare/difficult then I think people are being a bit overdramatic.

If it's a WOW thing where you can rapid fire respec at a moment's notice, then, uh, that'd be a serious crime.
