Does this game take into account different surfaces and how loud they are to walk on like in the original games or splinter cell? Always thought that was a good mechanic that made stealthing a lot more interesting/risky.
I don't recall there being much of a difference between stone and grass (for example), but there could have been. The main things to watch out for are broken glass and water.
I'd be interested to know too. It would be downright ludicrous not to include it, but who knows. In the pre-release vid the developer only mentioned broken glass and water puddles. Considering you can't jump anymore (and therefore can't jump from soft surface to soft surface) I wouldn't be surprised if they at least lessened the importance of surfaces.
Didn't reviewers crap on Deus Ex aswell? that was a amazing game, kinda expect this one to be good aswell.

Right. So there's no ultra sensitive/high risk surfaces like marble or metal? No low risk carpet? Ouch...
Thief is about waiting. But not waiting for a gap in patrols, or an opportunity to silently knock out a guard. Its about waiting for the next three rooms of the level to stream into RAM, as you mash X to jimmy open a window. Waiting for the camera to fly back into Garretts head after it swooped down to street level to show you something was happening. Waiting for first-person animations to play out as Garrett slides open all five drawers of a table, one-by-one. Waiting for each cutscene to throw the story further into disarray with nonsense plot mechanics delivered through poorly written dialogue.
Not from memory. Or if they're there the sound difference is so trivial I never noticed.
Well that's horrible.
But the sense of historical place is immediately broken by guards that speak in a range of unlikely accents from Texan to Aussie, and who endlessly complain about how much they long for a cup of coffee. The scriptwriting also fails to find a coherent voice or tone. (In one early scene you watch a guard plunge a dagger into a corpse's stomach to remove a swallowed ring. After the amateur surgeon leaves, another guard, having been chastised for missing the valuable when he first searched the body, comments: "You don't suppose we should be checking for cock-rings and stuff?")
Despite the abject poverty of this take on Victorian London, the streets are lined with discarded gold: watches, goblets, coins and trinkets, glittering as they wait for Garrett to scoop them up from the puddles into his bottomless pockets. Seemingly every room is filled with a dresser, a desk, a safe and a wardrobe housing something to plunder. [...] The sheer number of valuables to harvest soon wearies - only finding the secret items offers a true challenge. Collecting everything else is busywork. You more often feel more like a diligent cleaner than a master thief.
Actually, this topic has brought about a question I wanted to ask. Is there any review/press company that organizes it's reviewers? Like say they have someone who knows stealth games, play and reviews stealth games, someone who primarily plays RPG games review RPGs etc? I think it would be a little easier for me to get something out of reviews if I was looking at an "expert" opinion of the genre they are playing. Rather than some hyperbolic review complaining about story and other secondary stuff to game-play.
I... will wait for a massive price drop.
Which site do you write for?We at least try to have people play games they're interested in and genres they're familiar with. EG: The reason I reviewed Thief is because I am (I think) the only member of our team very familiar with the series. But it doesn't always pan out. Sometimes nobody is very familiar with a franchise/genre, or the best person is busy with another game and is unable to juggle two.

It seems the reviews nearly universally pan the ending/story, so it will be interesting to see how he feels after finishing it.

My mouth words and game footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBTQQwcXlWA
Played on PC, Master Custom difficulty, Focus ability locked off. Note: You can play through the entire game comfortably without using focus. It's not a busted, gameplay integral ability.
EDIT: I see I'm in the OP already. All according to plan.

Said nobody ever about a bogan accent
It's now a problem because the necessity to use additional tools has been diminished. You've got the tools but you rarely truly "need" them. The tools have shifted from essential equipment used by Garrett in risk/reward scenarios that require inventory economising, to high reward low risk tools that are easy to resupply. I didn't make my way through half the game without using water arrows because I felt I needed to economise them. I did so because I never felt the need to use them.
Yes. I advise everybody proficient with stealth games to play on Master Custom, where the AI is more alert and deals the most damage, but not so much that it's cheap. Under the custom option lock off focus (super powered ability, not needed at all). You can also try turning on "stealth takedowns only" disables vertical takedowns and requires AI not be in an alert state, which will lessen the easiness of blackjacking. You may also turn on other options, like more expensive resources and slower movement. I didn't, but in retrospect maybe should have.
You can turn on/off almost everything related to the hud. I advise turning off waypoint markers to make level exploration more interesting. Turning off guard status display also demands you pay more attention to their stance/audio.
Your voice is nothing like I imagined you would sound like.
I expected this. I could see this coming a mile away. Game just never looked that good. Glad I am waiting, but I will pick it up for $30. Sucks because I liked this series on PC.
Dont forget the cock rings.Watching a couple videos and the I'm really taken aback by the amount of 'fuck's and 'shit's some characters throw around constantly. So jarring and unnecessary when they already have in-universe curse words that have been used for the last 3 games.
It really seems emblematic of the mindset behind most of the game's direction to me.
Your voice is nothing like I imagined you would sound like.
Will watch. Do you give a score for the game?
It's good. I don't see anything where the reviews scream horrible.
Wow, that RPS review is... unexpected to say the least.
That's cool, I always hoped the game would end up being somewhat interesting and fun to play, if not worthy of the Thief name.
I knew the game would suck. They should have made a faithful Thief game that was like the original series and not another COD Action game wannabe. It also rips off way too much of Dishonest. Be more original next time.
