TB really seemed to like the game. It really reminds me of Dishonored, which I just played. So I just got my stealth fix.

Does this game take into account different surfaces and how loud they are to walk on like in the original games or splinter cell? Always thought that was a good mechanic that made stealthing a lot more interesting/risky.

I'd be interested to know too. It would be downright ludicrous not to include it, but who knows. In the pre-release vid the developer only mentioned broken glass and water puddles. Considering you can't jump anymore (and therefore can't jump from soft surface to soft surface) I wouldn't be surprised if they at least lessened the importance of surfaces.

Watched the GT video review.

Seems like they enjoyed the game. I didn't like the part where he said Garret can't jump, that seems like a weird thing not to add to this type of game. I also wish they could have added more into the technical problems with the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Seems like something important to talk about, rather then just add at the end of the video.

I'm kinda interested in the game now. I won't be able to buy it now since I'm already tapped out for next month. It will definitely be on my watch list for now.

Don't really know what to do besides try the game myself. Sometimes GAF has some "off-tastes" (mostly in regards to viewing something negatively) as far as a majority of opinions I happen to come across even for some old games (Quite a few people want a new star tropic for example, I found the first one to be one of the shittiest games I've personally ever played).

Reviewers as well are sometimes a bit off too. I guess its a risk I'll take when the price goes down. I'll just move the preorder money to Yoshi's New Island.

I don't recall there being much of a difference between stone and grass (for example), but there could have been. The main things to watch out for are broken glass and water.

Right. So there's no ultra sensitive/high risk surfaces like marble or metal? No low risk carpet? Ouch...

I remember watching a preview talking about it and how it's integrated into the game, so yeah it is in the game as far as i know.

edit: EatChildern answered you question better :p.

It sounds like there's some good stuff in there, if you're willing to ignore a number of missteps (QTEs, garbage storytelling, overabundance of resources). I trust the RPS guys and I found their review very helpful.

These reviews have basically reset my expectations and I'll be able to enjoy it as a mediocre stealth game. I'll buy it when the price comes down.

Not from memory. Or if they're there the sound difference is so trivial I never noticed.

Sneaky Bastards review:

Thief is about waiting. But not waiting for a gap in patrols, or an opportunity to silently knock out a guard. It’s about waiting for the next three rooms of the level to stream into RAM, as you mash X to jimmy open a window. Waiting for the camera to fly back into Garrett’s head after it swooped down to street level to show you something was happening. Waiting for first-person animations to play out as Garrett slides open all five drawers of a table, one-by-one. Waiting for each cutscene to throw the story further into disarray with nonsense plot mechanics delivered through poorly written dialogue.

The reviews I read seem to be pretty positive overall. The range of scores seems about right given the type of game this is; I always expect some low reviews for stealth games since some people hate stealth games. However, it sounds like they watered down the original to make it more accessible. They already did that a bit with Deadly Shadows, which was disappointing, so I guess it's predictable that they'd do it here. It sounds like anyone that has played through the originals will fly through this game without problems.

The comments on the economy and lack of surfaces is really disappointing though. I'll probably do what I did with Deadly Shadows, and wait until this goes on sale.

This just seems like a game I have to try myself. I don't mind paying 30 bucks to do so, and if it's halfway decent as a game to that's good. I've already succumbed to the fact it will not be a full-fledged Thief game.

So later I will know...

Well that's horrible.

Long and short of it is that I crouch walked/walked almost everywhere and only needed to slow walk whenever moving over water. Glass I'd just avoid or dash through and hide if the guards heard me.

Damn. No one has even seen PS3 or 360 it seems. Judging from all the reported technical problems on PS4 and even PC, I'm not sure I want to know how the game runs on the old consoles, and I intend to rent this game on PS3.

Wutttttttt, low reviews for a game? Pre-purchase regrets fading away slowly. It there's one thing I've learned, it's that the less mainstream reviewers like a game the higher the chances are that I will, and vice versa.

RPS and a few other writers/outlets are exempt from this, and seeing RPS and TB like the game makes me look forward to playing this. Fantastic PC options as well.

oh man

But the sense of historical place is immediately broken by guards that speak in a range of unlikely accents from Texan to Aussie, and who endlessly complain about how much they long for a cup of coffee. The scriptwriting also fails to find a coherent voice or tone. (In one early scene you watch a guard plunge a dagger into a corpse's stomach to remove a swallowed ring. After the amateur surgeon leaves, another guard, having been chastised for missing the valuable when he first searched the body, comments: "You don't suppose we should be checking for cock-rings and stuff?")

Despite the abject poverty of this take on Victorian London, the streets are lined with discarded gold: watches, goblets, coins and trinkets, glittering as they wait for Garrett to scoop them up from the puddles into his bottomless pockets. Seemingly every room is filled with a dresser, a desk, a safe and a wardrobe housing something to plunder. [...] The sheer number of valuables to harvest soon wearies - only finding the secret items offers a true challenge. Collecting everything else is busywork. You more often feel more like a diligent cleaner than a master thief.

Actually, this topic has brought about a question I wanted to ask. Is there any review/press company that organizes it's reviewers? Like say they have someone who knows stealth games, play and reviews stealth games, someone who primarily plays RPG games review RPGs etc? I think it would be a little easier for me to get something out of reviews if I was looking at an "expert" opinion of the genre they are playing. Rather than some hyperbolic review complaining about story and other secondary stuff to game-play.

I loved Thief and I'm soo not interested in this game. The least it could do is score spectacularly bad so we could all have a laugh. Sounds like its a mediocre game that works pretty well for what it is and plays off of nostalgia. So, TR.

We at least try to have people play games they're interested in and genres they're familiar with. EG: The reason I reviewed Thief is because I am (I think) the only member of our team very familiar with the series. But it doesn't always pan out. Sometimes nobody is very familiar with a franchise/genre, or the best person is busy with another game and is unable to juggle two.

Which site do you write for?

Rocket Chainsaw. Fairly small Aussie website born from the ashes of the once much larger (and now dead and buried) PALGN. About ~2 years ago a number of senior staff, myself included, left that site to start this one.

On the plus side it seems like there haven't been too many changes made that would cause me to hate this.

Sadly one of the most consistent problems people have been having is with the level design, and since that was one of my favorite parts of thief it looks like I'm gonna pass this one up, at least until it goes on sale for the holidays.

My mouth words and game footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBTQQwcXlWA

Played on PC, Master Custom difficulty, Focus ability locked off. Note: You can play through the entire game comfortably without using focus. It's not a busted, gameplay integral ability.

EDIT: I see I'm in the OP already. All according to plan.

Your voice is nothing like I imagined you would sound like.

Will watch. Do you give a score for the game?

Said nobody ever about a bogan accent :p

It's now a problem because the necessity to use additional tools has been diminished. You've got the tools but you rarely truly "need" them. The tools have shifted from essential equipment used by Garrett in risk/reward scenarios that require inventory economising, to high reward low risk tools that are easy to resupply. I didn't make my way through half the game without using water arrows because I felt I needed to economise them. I did so because I never felt the need to use them.

Yes. I advise everybody proficient with stealth games to play on Master Custom, where the AI is more alert and deals the most damage, but not so much that it's cheap. Under the custom option lock off focus (super powered ability, not needed at all). You can also try turning on "stealth takedowns only" disables vertical takedowns and requires AI not be in an alert state, which will lessen the easiness of blackjacking. You may also turn on other options, like more expensive resources and slower movement. I didn't, but in retrospect maybe should have.

You can turn on/off almost everything related to the hud. I advise turning off waypoint markers to make level exploration more interesting. Turning off guard status display also demands you pay more attention to their stance/audio.

Thanks for these tips. Sounds like with some settings tweaks, there can be a bit more enjoyment squeezed out of this game. I am going to try these when I pick it up.

I expected this. I could see this coming a mile away. Game just never looked that good. Glad I am waiting, but I will pick it up for $30. Sucks because I liked this series on PC.

I just bought the game for $33 on Green Man gaming. 10% off for pre order, an extra 25% off with the code

Watching a couple videos and the I'm really taken aback by the amount of 'fuck's and 'shit's some characters throw around constantly. So jarring and unnecessary when they already have in-universe curse words that have been used for the last 3 games. :p

It really seems emblematic of the mindset behind most of the game's direction to me.

Dont forget the cock rings.
Apparently people talk about cock rings in this game somewhere

Gave Thief 3/5. Main review page here.

I knew the game would suck. They should have made a faithful Thief game that was like the original series and not another COD Action game wannabe. It also rips off way too much of Dishonest. Be more original next time.

So apparently Rhianna Pratchett wrote the story for this reboot? That's Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge, and Thief now where people have complained about weak stories. Why do we keep getting her to write videogames?

Wow, that RPS review is... unexpected to say the least.
That's cool, I always hoped the game would end up being somewhat interesting and fun to play, if not worthy of the Thief name.

John's review is what made me pull the trigger on buying the game just now. Only $36 (no tax) on Green Man Gaming with the promotion code, so a bit less of a commitment than those going for the console versions.

but it isnt a COD action wannabe, also, what's "Dishonest"?

I know some people are talking about how the story is far removed from the gameplay, but these script quotes and iffy voice acting complaints are what will keep me furthest away from this game. Dishonored, even though the main plot was lacking, had a very rich world that was worth exploring every nook and cranny for. If this is a bland, poorly-modernized interpretation of Victorian England I'll just steer clear thank you.
