Decided to ask the deeper question here instead of over there...

Why is it that black women are so highly educated while black men are not?

That thread is going better than I thought it would.

Hopefully it isn't some fuckery by morning.

In other news I just saw Mya in a wonder woman costume

You know, that's a good question...

Black girls in general are encouraged to have an attitude of self empowerment, so there is no negative forces discouraging them from pursuing academics.

Black boys (mainly amongst their peers) are encouraged to focus their attention in other directions (sports and other masculine endeavours) while school work is seen as soft.

This pretty much.

Going along, and I don't really have statistics to back this up, but in a lot of black families, athleticism is promoted in boys almost more than education. In my family, and in a lot of my friends' families, it was generally acceptable for the girls to be primarily focused on their studies. This was definitely the case for my younger sisters. But when I got a certain age, I was given a choice: basketball or martial arts. My parents meant well and definitely wanted what was best for me, but it was never seen as acceptable for me to only want to focus on my studies in the same way my sisters were able to.

How many of us graduate high school, much less college?

Of course, I'm wondering why that is.

Interesting. My brothers all played sports, but my parents expected us all to focus on our studies more. Extracurricular things were secondary. I was never the sports type - I always *did* want to learn a martial art, though...

EDIT: Looking at cousins, though, I can see how the women seemed to be pushed towards more.

But if that's the case, isn't that tacit admission that the problem with black men and schooling is the fault of the negative parts of the black culture?

Chris Rock did a skit on it.

the educational system isn't built for black males to succeed anyway. but that's another tangent...

I mean, I also understand social factors, like stereotype threat. But black women have that doubled, by virtue of being black and being women. They face stereotype threat from both sides.

He is this years Travis Porter and 50 Tyson with less talent. He is a fountain of comedy.
the real Whoa!

I was listening to graduation the other night thinking I might have to move this album up on my kanye cycle. Wayne was horrible but ye killed his verse.

came up with this awhile back

"Oh my god is that a black card?" I turned around and reply "why yes bit I prefer African-American Express. Reluctantly accepted some places" #PCKayneWest

You look like an album cover. Fanfuckingtastic!!!!

The one with your arms crossed needs to be your new avatar.

Did you take a selfie while dropping a deuce?

Of course, I'm wondering why that is.

Having involved parents throws a wrench into the equation.

That's one of the reasons that racism is an overarching societal problem rather than one that only those directly affected should have to worry about. A lot of negative (external) influences and stereotypes can lead to internalized attitudes and become self-realizing over time when coupled with factors already making education less accessible for minorities.

What are the ACTUAL stats? According to this (same guy using same census data): http://youtu.be/apMUojvva5E?t=2m03s black women are destroying everyone at 9.7% but black men are 7.0% and white men are at 6.1%. Yet you say black men are not highly educated, would you say the same about white men?

Matthew Mconghuey should not get an oscar for Dallas Buyer's club.

It would be like Dy getting an oscar for playing an absentee father.

double jump

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".
is it me or is there a lot of subtle "you still ain't shit" post in the black women education thread?

I will admit that the thread title is a bit off, since most enrolled doesn't necessarily mean most educated....but I don't give a fuck.

Real talk, I am about to join the L club. Tropical Freeze, Smash 4, Bayonetta 2, and the Wonderful 101 are calling out to me...

And I do plan to get a Vita sometime in the future for Super Dangan Ronpa 2.
