Fighting Games Weekly | March 3-9 | Edition Edition

If it was so hype why did they drop it? Did people stop going to their events- if so why? I think MLG is a great organization but at the end of the day they have their own self interests and aren't the most reliable/supportive actors when it comes to the FG scene.

Because MLG wanted newer games, not old stuff (at the time).

I don't plan on playing Dark Souls II but I wouldn't mind watching someone else do it. FloE and Aris should play it for some laughs.

I have no idea how Twitch is going to have all this streaming. It's already beyond crap at times. Some times I have to watch Sp00ky on low settings and he looks like the lip syncing midget on youtube.

I think you should stream the game if possible.

I've had it pre-ordered from Club Namco for some time now. CANNOT WAIT. I have to make sure I get all my work done by next week so I can spend the weekend on the game. Demon's Souls/Dark Souls literally saved last gen single player gaming for me. Mostly everything else was so boring.

Going to be picking it up soon, also floe I do not think he is going to be playing it because he never beaten 1, but moonz might be picking it up, also he is streaming the first one now(his first playthru) http://www.twitch.tv/mo0nz

The Souls games are the game series of this generation. If those games were released in the PS2 era they wouldn't get that title but in this one they are far ahead of most games. You know a game has reached that status when people use phrases like "its the Dark Souls of X" to hype shit up.

Sucks I have to wait until April for DS2 though.

I quit 5 minutes into Dark Souls. Games require patience more so than any game which I don't have.

It's not that bad. I think the difficulty is over-exaggerated. I'm not saying it's not difficult but it's more of a trial and error learning experience. I don't get extremely frustrated when I die (maybe just a little but not much). In fact, the fun is in dying and going through the areas and learning and applying yourself. And as you level up, the same enemies that were destroying you in the beginning of the game become easy, weak targets........or you just run past them.

Give it another try.

I'm about to play a little bit of Dark Souls myself now in preparation.

I love Dark Souls and especially what it represents it terms of game design, but the wankery is too much at times, and mostly on GAF too. Especially when it gets to a point where people are saying it's ahead of the genre or gaming in general. I put that shit in the same bin as people who think a game being open world makes it inherently better than linear experiences. Can't see past their noses.

Haven't played DaS despite owning it on two systems, but I've done two playthroughs of DeS and while I don't exactly like the game I appreciate what it did. Although I absolutely did not appreciate it the first playthough since I went full soul form and magic user. Second time around I played a melee build, tried to stay human the whole game, and did the whole invade/summon thing. Lot of really fun, tense moments when I played the game like that.

People who enjoy the whole leveling up and getting better aspect of fighting games should like Dark Souls. The whole "get bopped, learn from the bopping, get gud and bop shit that was bopping you" aspect of Dark Souls is pretty similar to fighting games. Not too surprising that a lot of FGC peeps dig the game.

But yea, the games are definitely hard but I agree the difficulty is overrated. Maybe they're super impossible for people like my brother, who only plays Madden and CoD and had to play on easy to beat RE5, but if a normal dude goes into Dark Souls with a more survival horror mindset then it's not near as hard. Dark Souls is like, survival RPG.

The Dark Souls PvP community has a pretty huge scrub mentality though.

I think what makes it unique is that link between player agency and tension/fear. I don't play horror games, but in action games I really haven't experienced anything close to that before. Distant 2nd would be Jackals in Halo 2 Legendary, which also skirt a similar line between being totally unfair and being totally fair.

I hate that shit. There was like a 6 month period where it seemed every day someone on GAF was all "LIFE IS OVER. NOTHING CAN TOP DARK SOULS"

It's a shame, I wanted to play the game but I know if I play it, I won't like it. I already hate the game because of the way GAF praises it

Then there's people that think every game should be like Dark Souls. There was some stupid ass thread about how the next Zelda should be like Dark Souls.

It's really bad and definitely those really embarrassing times when you can just see bias consuming people, but you should play the game. It's one of those games I feel everyone has to play just so they've experienced it whether you like it or not, like CoD4, TF2 or even Angry Birds.

Even people I thought would hate the game ended up at least appreciating it (like my brother, who doesn't care for anything unless it's shootbang or vroomvroom). It's not for everyone (IMO it still caters to a pretty specific and nuanced playstyle esp. with regards to how progression is structured), but it is one of those experiences. If you have an 360, it's consistently on sale for $5 every few months on XBL. I haven't played Demon's Souls, but that might be a good starting point too that some people prefer over Dark Souls.

I myself played it after hearing about how it is the be all end all of gaming, but still enjoyed it, despite a ton of it being more familiar than what I was sold.

It's good. It's not some soul crushing game it's just trial and error. No harder than a NES Mega Man.

Basically.

But in an era of games that hold your hand and spoon feed you like a fucking baby, Dark Souls feels crazy difficult for many players. It's NES difficult, if that.

1. Demons' / Dark Souls (Dark Souls II here?)
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl
3. Street Fighter 4 vanilla
4. Nier (don't hate, I'm a big drakengard fan)
5. Rune Factory 3

Persona 3/4 would be up here generations were based on periods of time.

Who's everyone looking forward to trying out in GGXrd?
Potemkin, Venom and Sol. Also Johnny, Testament and Zappa when(if) they become available.

Google translate gives me "resume"? I assume it means best wishes moving forward?
It's "Las Mañanitas", a traditional mariachi birthday song that is also popular in other latin american countries like Peru. Translated lyrics:

These are like the morning songs that our King David used to sing.
Today being the day of your birthday, we are going to sing them to you.

Wake up my dearest, wake up, see now that the day has dawned
now the little birds are singing, the moon has finally set.

How lovely it is in this morning, when I come to greet for you
we all come with joy and pleasure and to celebrate with you.

The very day you were born all the flowers here have bloomed
and in the baptismal font all the nightingales have sung.

The dawn has come my darling, and the sunlight's here for us.
Rise and shine up with the morning and you'll see that here's the dawn.

That's a really dumb reason to not like a game.

Maybe it is.

but just like in fighting games, when you see too much of a character people start to hate it. I mean people even take it as far as hating the player that uses that character.

Maybe we see them so much because they make other characters pale in comparison.

Get my drift (insert Kappa).

re: hating ryu

low tier heroes are fine, but people who pick unpopular characters mostly because they're unpopular bewilder me. idk if anyone else has seen this but i recall a gaf thread about fighting game characters and more than one guy was like "i play so and so because no one plays him" ryu is cool, i'd play ryu, and akira too.

I guess, but then you're just middling with the beginner/intermediate stages and becoming reliant on something that in the very least is exponentially less dependable as you progress past that stage (or fail to).

idk, I'm sure not everyone cares about getting better and just wants to play the game, my perspective is admittedly narrowed by how I want to enjoy these games.

If you are mostly playing online, there is nothing more boring than fighting Ryu after Ryu after Ryu. Choosing a character who isn't often played is taking the higher ground and gives all the Ryu clones something interesting to play against.

Also if you play a rare character, there is more chance you will beat players at a lower level due to match up knowledge (or lack thereof). There is also a better chance of earning recognition due to standing out more.

Of course, that doesn't always work out...
