How Watch_Dogs looks on PS4 [heavy GIFz retrospective]

These days, unless it's a 60fps Gamersyde direct capture, it's impossible to really gauge what a game is going to look like.

Why we have this thread if we have the other one?

Main point still stands, is a downgrade from the 2012 version.

How can a game on a different platform show a downgrade to the first platform?

E3 2012 was PC, this is all PS4 footage, breaking news PS4 is not PC.

This thread is specifically about the PS4 version, hence the initial footage being from the E3 2013 conference.

significant downgrade never happened.

Until we see where all the wind, particle and shadow effects from the feb. 2013 demo went, it's too early to judge one way or the other. Considering what happened to Ground Zeroes, the odds don't favor the 'no significant downgrade' angle.

Breaking news: Why should be care about the evolution of the PS4 version?

The main point was how the game looked compared to 2012 version. What's the point of this thread again?

That 2013 build looks on par with 2014 build.

Color me shocked. That's what happen with 99% of games.

From the gamersyde video.

Look at the gamersyde video from March 2014, even compared to E3 2013 there are at list several things changed. Look at that water from the beginning of the trailer, it's so dull, so unspectacular it's nothing like the one from E3. Look at car collisions now and in the previous videos. The lighting seems much more simplified now.

Because it's the only footage we have.

Think about it, what does the PC version look like? you don't know so you have no idea if it was downgraded....yet. It likely was, but we don't know so it would just be random speculation until the game is released in May.

Also, because it says PS4 in the thread title, you don't care about the PS4 version, your in the wrong thread.

PS4 version compared to PS4 version? not so much.

And I know the PC version won't look like that because FC 3 PC version didn't look like the FC3 gameplay reveal.

I think the initial footage was more a "proof of concept" type showing that they hoped to achieve based on their info and resources at the time.

As time went on they probably realised they couldn't get it to THAT level and scaled it back

Then why show the game at all? No one is pointing a gun to their heads saying show us the game you don't have up and running yet. Its clearly a reveal to market how they want the game to be perceived.

I sincerely doubt it's deliberate. The game wasn't even done when those trailers came out. Technically, how are they going to give a precise look on ps4 hardware more than a year before the game came out, before the game is even finished? Were the PS4 specs even finalized yet?

Then don't show it to us, it was played live on stage as if it was ready to be pressed to discs. Sure you can make the claim that its PC footage but the PC version is not going to look like the 12' reveal, it will look like a cleaner PS4 version.

Wait a minute is there no vehicle damage in Watch_Dogs? (collision damage)

At list there is almost none in what was show now, in March. You can see also in the gamersyde video, there are several seconds when a red car gets hit from back and on front and it seems to be like new afterwards.

Ubi said they'd be giving a solid answer sometime soon. At least from a tweet I saw yesterday. If they took notice they can at least tell it like it is. We're all for the most part raging over a really bad trailer. I want to be proven wrong. If it goes down as the worst GAF reaction so be it. But I want the game I was promised.

Your argument is nonsensical.

Do you care about the PS3 version.....compared to the 2012 build? no? why? because they're on different systems?

and you don't know shit about the PC version, you can make all the assumptions you like and you may even be right, in fact I think you probably will be, but you don't know.

Also Far Cry isn't Watchdogs. That comment reminds me of all the KZ2 crap the KZ:SF got.

Let us not forget that "downgradeaton" thread was created because of this gif
http://i.minus.com/iboqqHgyy5tOsD.gif

WD on PS4 does not look that way. Its not as good as PC, and its not that bad as that abomination of oldgen footage.

How do you know it's old gen footage? Ubisoft have had the chance on numerous occasions to clarify where this footage comes from, yet they didn't.

I / we have to assume it's PS4 footage as it's highly unlikely Ubisoft would release b-roll scenes of the old gen version. No journalist has seen that version yet but you really believe they are handing out b-roll footage of 360/PS3 gameplay to the press for their video preview coverage of the game? A game that was announced as the first next-gen experience, no less.

I care about the PS4 version and the 2012 version, because it was taunted as a "next gen" reveal that year. It was supossed to show how the game will look on next gen hardware and a sign of things to come. inFAMOUS loos quite near in most aspects to what WD did that year compared to the real game we are getting.

How is that nonsensical? PS3 is not next gen, PS4 it is. Watch Dogs 2012 was supossed to be "next gen".

How you can look at these GIFs and say the graphics haven't been downgraded will ever be beyond me. And I usually neither care about nor notice these things. Not to say it doesn't look good, but it's worlds apart from E3 2012 and even Feb 2013/E3 2013 version.

Nobody said the game looks bad, but this is something thats becoming a pattern, lying. While the game still looks fun and everything and it manages to even look good, its not what we were shown and hyped up to believe. I would much rather have that e3 build still, but whatever. Still buying the game.

I like nice graphics too, but I just don't see enough of a difference between revisions to care. Game looks fun to me.

They should just delay it for another year and do it right, save Ubisoft any potential embarrassment—if any is to be had at all.

Fun fact: 246.9MB of GIFs.

Well spotted, very creative :)

- The Gif's above in some cases are fairly different, some look Current-Gen, some last-gen. But with all said, my faith is restored thanks to the OP.

Thanks for the work.

It just rained in the first gif and the sun stands a bit lower.
If the roads were wet in the second gif they would basically look identical.

Those scenes show completely different environments under completely different circumstances. I don't think they've shown us how weather works in the game, so the puddles much of the puddles being amiss doesn't really say anything.

It is "worlds apart" [your words not mine] because those two gifs are showing different environments at different TOD and weather.

1st gif has wet environment and low hanging sun that is causing heavy lens-flare effect to the screen [casting less light and making everything a darker]. This changes look of the game enough that you cannot easily compare them.

yea those are night and day.

But at E3 2013, they were running all of these games on PCs still and approximating what they wanted console versions to look like, were they not?

Can't say I'm surprised. Now that the game is visually not what we hoped, it's onto whether the game is any good or not.

Ubisoft need to be taught a lesson for their bullshittery. It's plain misrepresentation.

Division....probably looks lol-tastic in real-life.

I wonder how much of it is "hey look we're going to lie to our customers intentionally because screw them!!!"

...and if it's just actually "this is game development, the closer you get to launch, more optimization passes are required to get the game running at a consistent frame rate"

forget the graphics. o just hope the gameplay isnt a mess

glad i'm not the only one :) . the downgrade doesn't look nearly as bad as first thought (tho it's obvious). it's the gameplay they've shown that's making me wonder just how much freedom you'll have, as opposed to having to do certain scenarios in a certain way. hope i'm wrong...

Felt like I was all alone in the other thread, glad there are people who share my view.

How you can look at these GIFs and say the graphics haven't been downgraded will ever be beyond me.

I can offer some explanations.

First GIF:

It has just been raining.
There are wet surfaces everywhere.
The sun is lower.
This helps generate more definition in the normal maps, particularly as they are shiny in that weather condition.
The camera is also mostly pointing directly towards the sun (much like the opening shot in that famous initial reveal), which, combined with the shiny surfaces, generates a big glowy, impressive reflection off the ground. And being fairly low, the sun happens to generate a bit of lens flare too.

Second GIF:

He's mostly not facing the sun.
He's mostly under a massive shadow of something.
It's dry.
The sun is higher in the sky.
All of this lends itself to not showing any of that good stuff, and it can all be explained by these factors. As you can see in the GIF DieH@rd just posted, there is definitely still lens flare in the game. There is also apparently rain. And wind.

I think you are underestimating how much of a difference wet surfaces and times of day make to the overall visual impact.

The question remains of course, why Ubisoft offered a B-roll that only contained footage with no rain, with all the daytime footage showing the sun high in the sky with barely any wind.

Hard to just "forget" about the graphics, when those were the thing that brought the game to peoples attention in the first place.

And it's just a silly thing to say that we should forget about them. Because graphics fucking matters. I don't care what anyone says. Nintendo fans were out in droves in the early days of the wii claiming "graphics don't matter, it's all about gameplay". Then the wii u comes around and some of the games for that thing is shown off, and nintendo fans go nuts over the graphics (remember the reactions to the X trailer?). So yes, gameplay is the most important part of a game. But graphics help add a lot to the experience of playing a game.

The only thing I don't like is the daytime lighting. Assets look good enough for me, but those daytime shots just seem so flat and lifeless.

I guess they would turn it off in trailers to make the game look cleaner, but I hope that vehicle damage is in the game.

Open world games without destructible vehicles should be against some sort of game design law.

Fellow Gaffers, what does your gut instincts tell you? Do you think when the game finally releases on May27th, do you think it's going to look downgraded? Or do you think it will be just as good if not better than E3 2013 and Feb reveals on PS4?

Die@Hard buddy what do you think?

I want to believe that the game will look great on the PS4/Xbox One
:( I don't want to be disappointed once again.

I'm not concerned about the graphics anymore ,that one car jumping gif is just an odd duck. I wonder if Jim Sterling is still going to rant at ubisoft.
