Is it just me or does there seem to be very little hype for Smash Bros. 4?

Might just be my imagination but whenever I go into the dojo thread, there appears to be very little excitement. Sure, when there's a new trailer or character revealed things change, but for the most part it appears to me like there's very little hype for SSB4 compared with SSBB.

Put it this way. When Sakurai had his daily updates for SSBB, you'd easily have 10 pages of discussion based on anything that he would post. Now? I casually entered the dojo thread the other day (in the day) to check out what was posted and I only had to go back a single page! Such a thing would never would have happened before.

As for myself, I'm in this really weird state at the moment. On the one hand, there's so many positive things that have been revealed that seem to make the game much more fun that SSBB (increased speed, removal of tripping, better brighter art style) and yet despite that...I'm still kinda meh at the moment.

For me I feel similarly to how I feel with most Nintendo titles, "Been there, done that". So my hype isn't there.

How've those community threads been doing? It's up to what, thread three or five now? Surely someone is hyped.

I really feel like Nintendo needs mainstream marketing. Maybe I'm just missing it because I don't watch Nickelodeon anymore or whatever, but I think all of their franchises are starting to lose some relevance. I'm not sure if it's anyone's fault other than people just getting older.

Perhaps due to the sales of the WiiU? I know its coming on 3DS too but I think there might be more hype if WiiU was selling better.

Not that many people have a Wii-U. That kind of limits the hype

Focus is on characters and backgrounds, not on actual game play; plus this is the fourth game already...

Been there, done that feelings

At least you can talk. Who are you?

Hmmm.

Probably because they haven't show much of the actual game outside an E3 demo. Once people start knowing the mechanics, and if things like tripping are in and all that shit, that's when people will start gaining interest.

The Smash trailers on YouTube have got quite a few views, the hype is there and it'll ramp up closer to release.

Brawl hype was very detrimental.

Even if its subdued I think its preferable to reveal news in increments like they do now. Leaves a lot of elements worth being surprised about. There will probably be bigger news around E3, closer to launch.

Well with Brawl, you had info dumps on the main site. We pretty much knew the whole game by the time it came out for most of us, so it was much easier to hype.

Brawl polarized the fan base and Wii U is depressing.

It's hard to get really excited about even the most promising game when the console it's played on is barely alive.

Hard to get excited when I have no idea if it's 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, a year, two years etc away.

I've learned not to hype Nintendo games until I have a solid release date. Even then that's risky business.

No news on gameplay has been concerning. They're also teasing it to death, by the time it actually comes out people will be tired of seeing it.

I'm sure slower days on the dojo were a couple of pages too but I may be not remembering. But the thing is there was more to discuss then one screenshot and a tweet. You had multiple screenshots and lots of revealing supplementary info, maybe too much.

And it's the same people in it speculating everyday like wild animals.

Anyway, it's because a lot of people were burned off of Brawl and also because some sect of people are like they are with every Nintendo sequel: "woo... another Smash Bros....." (Even though one only comes a generation...)

Really? I mean, the Smash threads have had 5 OTs so far, which is far more than any game seems to have amassed hype wise afaik. And then, once we get a release date and a hype to build towards, I'm sure the hype at that point will be crazy high.

Trust me, smash 4's hype broke brawl's record upon reveal, and as more and more things gets revealed for it, more and more hype will build.
As the poster boy of the smash OTs, its still getting alot of hype.

Brawl polarized the fat base and Wii U is depressing.

It's hard to get really excited about even the most promising game when the console it's played on is barely alive.

Why? As long as its released what do amazing sales do to improve an already released game? lol

And if its about the eventual online scene... if I still find people playing NFS U online with ease, you will be fine with SSB4.

Brawl killed my hype for Smash. It just wasn't near as fun as Melee was, nor balanced as well. Slowing it down like they did hurt the game a lot as well (not to mention tripping). I don't have a WiiU but its possible I would have considered getting one when Smash came out if I were excited for it.

I'm hyped but I haven't been seeking out any information on it or following the thread. Last time I did that for Brawl I felt like I knew everything about the game by the time I got my hands on it. Would rather forget about it until it's close to release this time.

I personally attributed the difference in relative hype to where I was during the pre-Brawl hype. NSider & NSider 2 were downright feverous over those updates, complete with lengthy flame wars over character potential. With NeoGAF being a broader community & a bit less over-the-top, it felt natural that the conversation was a bit more subdued.
I feel a lot of that is also attributable to the nature of the daily updates. The Dojo had a full daily blog post full of screenshots & information to be analyzed. Having daily photos on Miiverse isn't as substantial.
I imagine everything will ramp up proper as we get closer to launch, though.

When Bayonetta's announced things will pick up some.
Calling it now.

But honestly, I think it's because of the slow trickle of info we've been getting recently. The Brawl Dojo made every announcement, all we get now is a screenshot every day that may give us some insight as to how it plays. Maybe.

Not complaining though. I'd like going into the new Smash knowing very little. Brawl's Dojo have away a bit too much.

I think it's smart to not create much hype for now. Nintendo needs to focus the hype after E3, near the launch date.

Brawl destroyed the hype for me. I want Smash 4 to be awesome, but I'm taking a wait and see approach now instead of frothing at the mouth like I did when Brawl was released.

What.

They're already at the fifth OT of SSB4, right? It's really rare that you see people talk about a game that much here on GAF. This kind of baffles me. How excited should people be? Ten pages of discussions on every single screenshot he posts? Your expectations are absurd. Honestly it seems to me like this it's pretty hyped, especially considering it's on a platform few own. Hell, The Witcher 3 is NeoGAF's most anticipated game and it's talked about way less than SSB4.

Once I know exactly when it's coming out and the kinds of modes/features we're going to get in each version, I'll start getting hyped.

I'll get it for the 3DS (don't have/want a Wii U), so I'm really interested in knowing what kind of modes it's going to have. Adventure mode like Melee? Story mode like Brawl? Challenge mode(s)? Something new?

Pictures of new maps and items they release n a regular basis don't do a lot to get me hyped. Other than HOW I'm going to be playing the game, only NEW character announcements get me hyped.

The new daily.jpg series isn't the Dojo, for the record. That was several images and paragraphs detailing one aspect of the upcoming game extensively. This is a single image (sometimes two), usually with only a line of descriptive text to go along with it. Less information is coming out, therefore there's less to talk about.

I don't think the hype is particularly low for Smash, however.
