#DarkSoulsDowngrade and #YOULIED \\ a.k.a You got some splainin' to do, Namco

I was on media blackout before the game was released and I've been playing the game for the past two nights. I think the game looks great and I'm not really concerned whether they showed some other code prerelease. It happens for a lot of hyped big titles, and Dark Souls 2 is no exception.

This represents my experience perfectly. I've stated numerous times I was on a blackout in the lead up to launch. The game I'm playing now is just incredible, I was worried about the director change-up and the questions about difficulty, but so far DS2 has been so good.

It's not hyperbole. They made everyone think the game was going to look far better than the version we got at release.

If enough noise is made those PR people will bug people who will give us answers.

Answers? The response will be "we couldn't fit everything we wanted in the game because of time/hardware limitations". And that's probably really what went on. So many games change from their initial reveal. It happens. Games change. People are acting like this is some huge conspiracy.

So you're saying that what you paid for was not worth $60 bucks?

Not saying what they did was cool, pulling a bait and switch there, but I mean... at the same time we kind of need to tone down our graphics fetishes.

Getting answers? What the hell planet do you live on? It was a demo of unreleased software that didn't match the 1.0 release. The answer you're looking for is reality.

You are not understanding. They ADVERTISED features heavily in that 'demo'. As in, they enticed people to buy their product after saying "Hey, this feature is in the game and it is an important feature because x". They did that from reveal, all the way up until release. With those same features as selling points. Then said features were absent from the game.

I don't think it's very common hide footage of the final game until launch. Not when the final version looks so different when compared to earlier footage.

Can you blame them? It's not like they showed people that the game would be downgraded like Ubisoft did with Watch_Dogs. They should have had a trailer released a month or two ago to show people that things had changed.

The problem isn't that the game changed, it's that they never told anyone.

So we should just bend over and take it? This shit shouldn't happen at all.

They're showing you something prettier than the final game to entice you to buy it and then everything is downgraded for various reasons and the end result is nothing like what was shown. That's pretty shitty

I don't think they did it intentionally or anything but it's still shitty as a consumer

Well I can't speak for everyone but I bought the game without looking at any pre-release media, and I'm sure a lot of other people didn't need enticing too. Besides, isn't it standard to assume that anything shown before release is pre-release code and there's no guarantee that the retail product will look the same?

Besides, neither Demon Souls nor Dark Souls looked amazing. The improved framerate and gameplay in this game is already a god send.

Also, I just looked at one of the preview videos posted in the thread, the constant flickering of the shadows cast from a torch during combat would have been terribly distracting.

Apparently people don't know how to read, or won't accept the facts, but it isn't just a simple change that happened throughout development. There are massive downgrades that were never hinted at, and were only seen after people bought the game.

Why does this thread exist in addition to the other thread, then? I think you people look unnecessarily vindictive. Also, Vaati's several videos right before release (and similar videos from others) showcased the game as it is on retail release. You guys are cherry picking older videos that look "better" yet are ignoring the videos that fully show the final version.

Not everyone watches Vatti, and that's putting aside the guy's TGS video in the other thread which wasn't the downgraded version. And I'm assuming, going by the title of this topic, that this is a twitter campaign or at least looking for some answers. Apparently everyone complaining is 'crazy'.

Whoever creates the OT for Watch Dogs should just use this post in place of any fancy graphics or text.

From Software probably forgot just how weak the 360 and PS3 were after working on the PC and set their target renders way above expectations. I won't be mad unless the PC version looks equally as bad.

Rich coming from the guy who ignores completely any disclaimer on promotional material :p

SMH @ the apologists in this thread.

A turd could come instead of disk in their game boxes and yet they'd still love them.

There was no such disclaimer in any of their gameplay demonstrations.

TRY AGAIN.

I think the final game still looks great, much better than the previous 2. I guess what they were demoing early on was actually the PC version, and passing it off as console gameplay, which is definitely shady.

Are you saying they didn't?

It's funny because even the screenshots on the back of the box seem to be from the older build, or so I've heard.

Such deception.

Also the beta had better lighting than the retail version and I actually played that on my PS3 so something clearly went wrong between then and now. Which is kinda okay. What is NOT okay is deceiving your customers with the end product. The torch mechanic is practically useless in this game now with the lighting engine tanked.

It's really astonishing how people are treating From/Namco compared to Ubisoft. It's a very similar situation in my eyes. Dark Souls 2 might even be worse, considering that no one knew about the downgrade until the very last second while Watch Dogs won't be released for quite a while.

Didn't they take out gameplay elements too regarding sorceries? Where you could charge them up?
People were saying some gameplay elements in the beta aren't in the actual release as well.

Well the only thing that was really shown was the reveal gameplay, and after that a bunch of trailers. No piece of media I have ever read asked what was running the game. Most people just assumed it was ps/360. It's a lie if you've never said anything.

Some of you people are missing the point ENTIRELY.

Game get's announced (April 2013) > Advertise new lighting engine and how this majorly affects gameplay > Continue to use this as a selling point until release day > Game doesn't have it on release day.

People take stuff out of beta versions all the time. That's why they're betas.

Watch them actually be making a current-gen version and that's what them and the PC versions look like.

Would be pretty sexy.

This is one of the major points. It's simply not the same kind of game they were selling.

Really? A campaign to get answers why the graphics were downgraded a little? grow the fuck up, it's a video game, this isn't like region locking where people get screwed over, or on disc DLC.

Word. I'm in full support of this campaign.

It's a damn shame. Any GAFer ripping into Ubisoft for their actions with Watch Dogs and then shrugging their shoulders when it comes to FROM/Namco should be embarrassed.

I really don't think this is something to get upset about. It's running on hardware that's going on 9 years now, and still looks better than the previous Dark Souls.

Did you also have no problem with the Colonial Marines thing?

Ehhh the game lighting system is still different than DS1 and improved in some situations and while it has been downgraded probably cause those were demos of smaller areas and not representative of the final game with the whole world it probably wasn't performing up to standards in the end. There are still dips of framerate and higher textures and the lighting system would probably add more strain to the game in the end. A problem would be the PC version getting dumbed down to look like the console counterparts when we know the PC can do way more than what those consoles can.

Exactly.

And that's why this thread exists, because people only found out after they bought the game. At least with Watching Dogs the game isn't out but the downgrade has been confirmed months before the release giving people time to reconsider their purchase, or not.

Whether the game is good or not is completely irrelevant to this discussion.

To make matters worse, alot of it is A) may affect gameplay due to graphics being USED as gameplay in Souls alot (shadows 'n such), and B) people being on blackouts with that close reveal.
