Age of Wonders III |OT| Follow The Leader

Hmmm. The Tome is pretty good, though if what I read on the forums (before they died a horrible death) is right, it is missing some information on some weapons (like Goblin Darts ignoring range and cover penalties, and Longbows ignoring range penalties).

The structures section could use some clearer organisation / sorting options too Maybe an overall tech tree and an indication of what racially modified units are produced by generic structures.

It'd be nice to be able to view it from the main menu (or preferably outside the game) as well.

The Editor is obviously incomplete (streaming errors on included stuff. the advanced settings in random generation don't work, etc) and the interface is clunky too, it'd be nice to be able to see what items do without placing them on the map and also to be able to see a description of what each item ability does. And what units do at all.

The main game seems good so far though.

Man, I haven't had this kind of fun since Shadow Magic! Just one more turn..... one more turn.....yeah, gonna take a break now.....except I need one more turn.....

It actually feels weird to play a PC (exclusive) game that was released on the day it was supposed to be released, not a beta, not early access, but a content full game. I was so sure this would be another botched release and that they might actually either have a last minute delay or release early access version today. (To be fair, their servers couldn't handle all the load right after release but seems fine now.)

But no, this feels like a proper game. Haven't seen any bugs yet and it plays exactly as you would expect. Thank you notch! And obviously Triumph Studios as well.

Unless, they change it in the patch, it doesn't seem to have proper UI scaling, no.

Edit: This was what I took earlier, showing the graphical glitches, but you can still see the scale of the UI. It isn't brilliant, but scaling doesn't bother me quite as much, I can manage. http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/432651023255444227/44ECE63526CCBEE2ECB4D42A4C9318A87527DCF4/

Much appreciated. The UI is small but it's not as unworkable as Fallen Enchantress or Sins of a Solar Empire. I think I'll buy.

edit: Too bad it won't be playable at 4K. Scalable UIs are really important for future compatibility.

So a couple hours into a match, my framerate's fine, but this delay between clicking things and actions actually taking place is greatly increasing.

I'm also new to the series and wondering if enemy AI is supposed to be moving around and attacking me during my turn. One of my cities was attacked by an enemy army during my turn.

There's also this minor issue I'm running into regarding ranged combat. Objects like rivers and crevices filled with lava are counting as objects that obstruct my line of sight? I'm confused.

There is indeed something... "slow" about the game. It may get better with patches, but there is indeed kind of a delay, and sadly the game's framerate could be better here.

About the AI: you and the AI take simultaneous turns. Each time a new turn begin, every player can act again. So, yes, it's perfectly normal. You can set the option in order to have separate turns.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, I was worried it was something on my end.

And thanks for this as well, I was thinking this was an option, but I wasn't quite sure. I thought it might have had something to do with the delay.

Compression perhaps?

GOG version shows now as 1.9GB. Downloading now after some hiccups. (might be biggest selling new game in GOG history)
I don't know anybody who knew this was coming out, and this OT isn't all that popular considering.

I don't think they advertised this well enough anywhere. I've seen Steam give more attention to bad indie titles (not implying all indie titles are bad) on the front of the store page than they have this. It's located nowhere in the banner, and isn't a featured game.

What are you basing this on? Have you heard something from GOG or the devs?

Well, how many full-featured titles with hype and a decent budget have been on GOG outside of the Witcher series?

I think Witcher 2 might be #1 still, but this is pretty huge. AOW series has a really strong following among older PC gamers (pre-steam days), especially in Europe.

Ah, so you're just guessing. I don't see this doing better than The Witcher games, as much as I'd like it to knock it out of the park.

Anyone get online multiplayer working? It won't connect at all for me. About to try local over Hamachi, hope that works.

my cake, fuck off
Just bought this. I've never played an AoW game, but this looks pretty cool. I hope the performance issues aren't as bad as some people say.

Is the combat more like Total War or Xcom with melee units? Maybe a stupid question but I was watching a video of it earlier and couldn't really work out wtf was going on haha.

It's closer to Xcom.
Thanks, I'll pick it up but probably not till the summer steam sales, too much of a backlog right now anyway :)

It's weird, I haven't received my confirmation email from Triumph but when i logged in to play as a guest I was logged in as the account I created.

I've never played an Age of Wonders before but this seems like it will be a strategy game that will finally manage to tear me away from Civ V. Playing through the early stages of the Elven campaign and while I've probably spent more time reading through the Tome of Wonders that I have been actually playing, I really enjoy the structure of it so far. The turn-based exploration of the overworld with your army, the turn based combat, delicious hex grids and the amount of lore, that's really been surprising. I kinda expected that AoW3 would sorta be like Civ V, you just choose a race and class, those provide some specific bonuses and just go but there's been this narrative experience to go along with it. Pretty cool so far.

Just figured out that you shouldn't queue a bunch of stuff up in a bunch of cities. I wondered why I had no gold. I had no idea you could set up cities to produce merchandise and just make tons of gold.

Edit: iHunterKiller posted some great videos on the Steam forum for people new to this series like me.

How do I separate armies?
With your army selected, click the blue icon with the boot in it and choose where you want that unit to go.

Cool, this is out now. I'll be looking for some in depth impressions. I'm not buying it at launch but only because

a) I have too many other games to play right now
b) summer is right around the corner

but I'll be buying it a few months from now for sure. Any comparisons to the great Master of Magic would be greatly appreciated. :D

Just got it onto my laptop.

Initial performance impressions are good. Runs at 30 - 40 FPS @ 1080p on my Core 2, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 with everything off, except for Textures set to Ultra, which is more than I can ask for with this laptop.

So this was a pretty epic fight. This was the leader's main force. He slid in and took my city while I was off clearing out tombs. I bring a full army up to the gate of the city and park it while I scramble the rest of my forces. I get 3 armies there and we go at it. Two horned gods slugging it out in the middle of the field while they are surrounded by melee and archers just beating on them. Meanwhile I have my unicorn forces flanking behind and just causing havoc with the charges. Total route. Now I have to go make a mad dash for his throne city.

(Sorry for the odd res, having to play in windowed mode til they patch the hi-res stuff)

Really enjoying the game, but it badly needs a more clear tech tree you can refer to in the game. I still have no clue what I need to get my T2 druid troops.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Kinda wish the game had a tutorial to play through, cuz I'm finding that there's a lot to take in here. Even so, I played through the first mission and things are starting to make a bit more sense. Game seems really fun, but again, it's kinda tough to say until I actually know what I'm doing.

I just made a random game with one AI and went to town. Has been letting me figure things out pretty well. Only thing I am still fuzzy on is the climate and land type.

Is it that certain races or classes want certain things?

From what I can tell, races and units all have preferred land/climate types. There are some global spells that can change a city's accepted climate, though I'm not sure if units can be affected.

The easiest way to figure out the difference between the land/climate types and who prefers what is to mouse-over the morale indicator for units and cities. There will be a bonus or penalty to morale displayed if they like or hate a specific area.

Yes the tutorial is a bit too basic. The Tome of Wonders make up for it though. Great Knowledge base...

I am also digging it so far. Played only a couple of hours last night and started with an Orc warlord. Smashing everything on my way at the moment with a stone and a frost giant I got from a neutral city as a quest reward.
There is something satisfying making the smaller units fly after an attack from one of the giants. I think they nailed it pretty well with the different sizes of the units. They do not only look big, but also feel that way.

The game has a solid potential to be quite good, but there are a number of things that prevent it to really become great, namely performance issues, some weird bugs (like the camera which tends to fly incredibly fast during the enemy's turn if you decided to speed up the battle), a few typos and translation errors here and there (french version)...

Nothing that can't be fixed with a few patches, but it seems to me that the game may have been released a little early. I really hope that they will improve the overall performances (which are not bad per see, but could definitly be better).

Performance is only really bad if you're maxing out the game. Dropping a few options down like AA and SSAO really helps to get that back, although I'd understand if you're running an uber rig and not getting the performance you expected from maxing out the game.

Anyone else having issues with the game getting very slow to respond when upgrading cities etc after a few hours of play?

I've got a decent rig 3770k, 7970 and 16gb ram and its going very very slow
