Major Nelson interview with Phil Spencer

I am really rather excited for the XBox One's future. Come a price drop, and a few more game announcements (Forza Horizon 2), I'll be picking one up.

I know Im going to get torn apart for this but MS needs to show us why they put Kinect in the box. They need some Kinect games. I would especially like to see a light gun game that works with it.

.

Would like to see somoething like that as well. Release a goddamn Time Crisis and show up why Kinect needs to be in our homes.

He mentioned games a god few times. E3 will be interesting to see if he can live up to his words.

Price drop would be nice, alongside new games and outlining where the Xbox One is going over the next few years.

MS's list is pretty skewed towards 3rd-party developed titles atm. XB1 has around 20+ exclusives released/announced. 15 of those are 3rd-party developed. (inc. stuff like 3rd-party timed exclusives like Titanfall, Peggle2,PvZ)

I dont see that it matters where its developed as long as its exclusive.

I wouldnt count the EA titles you mentioned either as they're on other platforms too (or will be)

Phil made it seem that the new CEO and himself have the same ideas of where Xbox is heading and should go. This is very pleasing news to me. E3 is going to be amazing this year!

He seems the right man for the job. Listening to gamers is exactly what MS needs to be doing right now.

Exactly. That is all I ever asked. Just be good old Xbox with games at the core, and then have all of the other neat features as branches off of that tree.

I like Phil but find the concept of a PR person at the same company interviewing another employee bizarre. I know other companies do this but ugh.

The interview is of course just a PR piece for Microsoft, but I commend Larry for even mentioning price. While we didn't get any answers, the fact that they even brought it up is pretty surprising. Normally you'd think they would want to ignore any mention of it whatsoever.

I don't have a problem with this, though. MS Studios still works very closely with the studios in the case of games like Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive, so those teams should still make the most out of the hardware. It also keeps the studios independent, so the cultures of those studios won't change. I think MS is wary of just buying studios based on what has happened with RARE, Lionhead, and the other closed studios. It's also the beginning of the generation, so this plan allows MS to get games out on the shelves while their internal studios gain more time to work on the big guns.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

That meme is a bit ridiculous. Just because you announce something doesn't mean it's finished. In all likelihood removing all the DRM was a huge time and money sink coming a few months before launch. I'm sure engineers were working many overtime hours to get everything ready for launch and I bet many of the features we've been seeing added since launch probably would have been done prior if not for them having to do the 180.

"There's a lot of learning that I did as a leader in the organization when I just heard how our message resonated with people, some of the decisions that we made that I think were actually the wrong decisions and we had to revisit those decisions..."

Too tired to do it properly but you get the idea

Of course they are going to try and do good PR in order to send a positive message. What else are they supposed to do? However, that does not take away from the fact that Phil is most definitely a 'games' guy who wants to have gaming at the core of the system. He recognizes that is what made Xbox and I sincerely believe he wants to remind everyone of that.

At any rate, it's a great move for Xbox any which way you slice it or dice it and they are not just going to use Phil as a smiling face to pander to gamers, while doing nothing to back that up. They are not that stupid. Nadella is a big supporter of Xbox and a guy like Phil was obviously put at the head of the table in order to right a ship that has veered off course.

No shit. But they got rid of mattrick and replaced him with phil for a reason. And they no doubt know that he can't hold himself up on talk alone.

I never said this isnt a positive thing but some people are acting like b/c he has a good image with gamers and says the right things means he will be their savior and he holds all the power. He got this job b/c Ms wanted a better image for the core gamer. That doesnt mean long term plans have changed. He has bosses and those are the ones we should be looking at if we want to know the direction things are going to go. I have a feeling that things will change short term but they still want mainstream and tv and media are still a big part of the plans . They just learned to shut up about it when it comes to core gamers.

I dont see that it matters where its developed as long as its exclusive.

But first-party was brought up, and that's the point of comparison there.

Yes, it doesn't matter if MS has a weak first-party if they publish/fund a ton of externally developed games.

But the problem with 3rd-party exclusives is that we's rarely aware of their exclusivity status until the game's actually announced. So it's rarely an apple-to-apple comparison that can be made properly between both companies.

I don't have a problem with this, though..

I never said I did.

when watching this, you get the feeling how off the mark the "first" vision for the Xbox One was.

Im happy that they are listening, it will hopefully make the next console from MS be exactly what the fans wanted it to be.

I thought your post later implied that Sony's strategy for PS3 was better. My mistake.

Sony maintained a healthy 3rd-party publishing effort on top of their 1st-party output. Games like Journey, Resistance, Heavy Rain weren't internally developed. There's no 'better strategy', there's only 'more games.'

I think there was a bit of contextual misunderstanding. I was merely saying that just because Sony's larger first-party team is larger vs Xbox having more games at the moment is a poor comparison to parlay at each other, because it wasn't an apple-to-apple comparison.

They would be stupid to not change the messaging and reinforce a strong focus on gaming after putting a guy like Phil Spencer in charge. But to be honest, they already had a strong focus on gaming since last E3 and on through launch, but it was drowned out by all of the other noise.

As for all of the TV features and such, of course they are still going to support it. Those features are part of the system and adds more value for some. But as long as that does not come at the expense of a strong focus on gaming, then it's gravy.

I doubt Nadella put Phil charge to just smile and say nice things, while doing the exact opposite. No, they are trying to go after the audience they know they need and put a 'games guy' in charge in order to accomplish this. Which is nothing but a good thing.

Phil makes me want to believe. I still think I'll get a PS4 first, but I wouldn't mind getting a second consoles if it actually has exclusives I want play. Still he just got the job it will take some time before his vision will actually have an effect.

One thing I hope to see in particular from Mr Spencer is a whole host of reboots of Rare titles. Revive those bad boys. Start fresh and keep them coming. Get as many new people as possible invested in the games.

The same goes for games on the OG Xbox that were awesome but are so old now that sequels would only appeal to a tiny minority. Bring on the Blinx reboot, and Voodoo Vince, and MechAssault, and whatever else that was awesome.

Start fresh, stay consistently good, and keep 'em coming, Phil.

If he is reading, i will post it again.........

Shenmue 3
Crackdown 3
Banjo
Perfect Dark
Kameo
Conker
Voodoo Vince 2
Blinx 3
Viva Pinata 3
Bloodwake 2
Midtown Madness 4
Project Ghotam 5
Rallisports Challenge 3
Age of Empire 4
Phantom Dust 2
Kotor 3
Crimson Skies 2
Psychonauts 2
Deathrow 2
Amped 4

Please..........

XBox winner of generation......
Phil seems to have a good head on his shoulders, but I definitely got the sense that people think he has a magic wand rather than a higher position in the division.

He is in the best possible position to turn it around for sure. What else could they possibly do to screw shit up any more than they already have?

To be honest I'm surprised at how fast they are recognizing it. All this MS restructuring is happening at a pretty opportune time.

It's simple.

Spencer just needs to be the new CEO of MS.

And turn the company private to shut the shareholders up.

Then use all Office profits to fund more games than we could play.

And then use Windows profits to subsidise the cost of the console by 80%.

Then we kill the Batman.

well they had to!

but it´s maybe t late for the xbox one, it still is underpowered and cost more than the PS4.

OMG, imagine a console backed by a 20 billion dollar a year budget. Make it happen Phil! Screw VR/AR, just boot us directly into the games Matrix style!

Nice to see him admit that they have had problems and that he is taking notice of what us Xbox owners are saying.

Will see how genuine he is when some of the decisions that we want happen. Games with Gold would be a good start. As would some discount for buying digitally.

Also while I'm hear how about a new version of Links Golf? I played the hell out of that on the original Xbox over Live

Just shows how MS contradicted themselves in all directions, clearly showed the lack of direction they were heading in. Made them look like fools.

This.
The interview is pure PR piece. The fact they mentions forums on there is a clear indicator that they saying what they believe core gamers want to hear. Spencers a cool guy and all but he still has a boss he answers too. MS wants to fix the xbox divisions image and judging by some of the almost orgamsic responses they picked the perfect guy for the job. One would have to be blind not to see that went with Spencer b/c his image is the exact opposite of Don Mattrick.

Any interview like this is going to be a PR piece. The reason people are excited is the way Spencer comes off in other venues, especially Twitter. He's absolutely the right guy for the job.

My biggest concern of Phil Spencer is that he will run the division back into financial ruin. Most of the franchises people are telling him to invest money into again would not sell well and would cost a lot to make. If he is seriously considering most of these game reboots then he would be insane.

Also he seems to be setting himself up for inevitable backlash when these games don't come out. He's already saying he regrets having ever mentioned Shenmue. Fans of a lot of these franchises are delusional about their viability.

I know Im going to get torn apart for this but MS needs to show us why they put Kinect in the box. They need some Kinect games.

Agreed, but I would add HDMI-in usage as well. You have 5 million people who bought Xbox One already because of the promises they made last year of things like Kinect capabilities, live-TV and app integration of fantasy sports and other major TV events. They need to deliver more than changing channels and Kinect Sports. I don't give a fuck who they have presenting at E3 so long as people don't feel like they were sold a bait and switch product over the last year. A repeat of last year's E3 presentation would not be acceptable in my opinion.

I love this guy. He's saying all the right things, and even admits that some of the decisions that they initially made were wrong.

With Phil Spencer heading the Xbox ship, I'm certain that Microsoft will deliver. Even though the One was supposed to be a multibox, it's great to see that he's reinforcing that games and gaming is the main priority. That wasn't as clear before.

Haven't watched the videos yet but from the impressions it sounds like he has a clear understanding of what he needs to do to bring the Xbox back to snuff and I like that. The more games for me, the more the backlog however, the more fun :). All I want from MS is diversity and variety. That's all.

A very nice interview, he said a lot of right things, however I thought this was going to be more of a podcast thing, where we would get a little more in depth answers.

Ohhh well, it's cool I guess.

the one thing about phil that blows me away and makes me really know he's a gamer guy, is the question he answers about certain games I'd never expect him to know about..the guy is super knowledgeable when it comes to games from back in the day.

Phil seems to truly understand the market and the reason Xbox has been so successful up to this point. You have to acknowledge and incorporate gamers in your vision if you want success with the platform and he clearly has plans to do that & more.
