Its 16:9 widescreen and media capabilities were unreal back in 2004. Games, movies, music, web browser, thing was so futuristic.

I've been thinking of trying to track down info about every peripheral for the PSP and PSP Go. Those consoles had some cool stuff. GPS, camera, microphone and probably other things as well.

If anyone can direct me to a source that documents all that stuff then please do.

I'm also a PSP Go kind of guy. That hinge is lovely. Just feels great to open and close that thing.

I can't believe I'm looking back on the PSP nostalgically. Time sure does fly. It was released when I was only 13!

Without a doubt my most hyped console before it was released, and the one I've been most obsessed about. It just blew my mind that I could play games with 3D graphics on a handheld, now I take it for granted since I can play them on my phone. The screen was amazing, and the ability to play video files portably. Nowadays these kind of things are normal since every phone has it, but back then the PSP was the best portable media device available. Was my first MP3 player as well. Not to mention first portable emulation device.

I always say how the smartphone revolution happened back when the PSP got hacked. If Sony knew what the potential was perhaps they could've beaten Apple to the punch.

Oh yes and when PS1 game support came along and then the emulator was hacked to allow us to onvert any PS1 game to PSP, my heart just couldn't handle all the joy. Again it's something we take for granted now, but PORTABLE FUCKING PS1 GAMES!!! Still blows my mind.

The great thing for me is there's still so much of the library I haven't played yet and there's still a game I'm looking forward to play from it! Type-0, the fan translation of which will be out in August. Can't wait to experience it on *Dat OLED.

UMDs became a bummer after Vita came out.

Or were a bummer the whole time, whatever...

Anyone ever see the Phantasy Star Portable Defender's Pack for sale anywhere? It's the PSP1+2 collection. Just wondering if it had a special box or anything.

It feels like only yesterday I was waiting in line at Gamestop to pick up my pre-order. There was some dipshit there with a Japanese system. He did let me check it out, but then proceeded to play porn on it then began bragging about he is in the industry and "I know that girl right there." Yeah great, random dude. I'm so impressed that you somehow broke into the porn industry.

PSP Go is so good.

If only Sony had the hindsight to have made PSN more of a thing up front.

AKA I can't play Ark of Napishtim or Birth by Sleep on the thing.

Or imports, but eh, that's another story.

For PSP OG, I rock the Hanna Montanna PSP, which is pure sex.

Loved the library of games that were either made or ported to PSP. Really did feel like a portable console. IMO, the smartest thing Sony ever did was to release most of the games digitally on PSN. It gives the library extra legs so that many more people have access to some great games on their Vita.

I still distinctly remember dropping down money for the preorder of the original PSP in 2005. Had a DS already, but couldn't resist how relatively high-tech the PSP was at the time.

I just charged it up again yesterday.

Though it's certainly dying, the battery would crap out within 2 hours, and the charging port is very, very sensitive to movements, I had to use a 3rd party battery dock charger for it.

Sad, because it's still functional, but not functional at the same time.

It used to be all the jazz, the thing was so the state of the art back then it was indeed unreal.

Good handheld.

On a side not I have a couple PAL movies that won't play on my US psp. If anyone wants them I'll ship for free within the US and UK. The movies are:

American History X
Transformers the movie (80s animated movie)

Both have case and sleeve but no inserts.

Edit:

First to quote gets it. Send me a PM too.

It was great for rpgs and srpgs, even if some of them were ports or remakes of older games. I wish the Vita had half the support the PSP got. I guess piracy didn't help it.
The (legal) stuff you could do with custom firmware was also cool.

Still have a bunch of unfinished games like Gungnir, Growlanser WoT, Ys 7, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (true ending), LBP, Killzone, Wild Arms XF and Type-0 to beat.

Most of those will probably be played on the Vita.

Great library for someone who likes Japanese games, doubly so if you missed out on a lot of PS1 RPGs.

System is let down by the fact so many of the games will never see the light of day on PSN for a variety of reasons, and optical discs in a portable system was a bad idea from the start.

Been flip-flopping on whether or not I should grab a new one. Got mine used back when VC2 came out it wasn't in great condition, but it was cheap. Then it fell off a shelf and now the O and right shoulder button don't work very well. Can't really play games on it so I basically use it as a UMD ripper and play them on my eCFW Vita.

Bought Persona 3 Portable on the Vita, IT'S NOT THE SAME MAN. :'(

Had been thinking about doing this thread for a couple of weeks now.
As you might have already seen in the pick up post threads, I've been going quite hard when it comes to picking up games.

And as a matter of fact I've just ordered two brand new PSP-3000 systems from Nippon Yassan since you can only get the budget E1004 models over here nowadays. :)

For whatever reason I skipped nearly all of the PSP generation even though I bought a Japanese system shortly after launch with Lumines, Ridge Racers and Minna no Golf. Once I got WipEout Pure, I played it for months on end.
After that it felt a bit by the wayside for me as I concentrated on other systems and thus had too many games to play as it was.

About a month ago I started getting the urge to buy a new system for the simple reason that even though there are many PSP games available digitally to play on the Vita, a huge amount of games just don't come to PSN, even with a Japanese account.

Also the temptation to collect the original UMD discs was extremely strong.
So yeah, I've been quite busy this past month. ;)

I'm just wondering, since I have 2 Japanese 3000s on the way, will a EU adaptor for an E1004 work on it?
This might not even be a problem if the adapters are like the originals where you could use them worldwide without any problems as long as you had the correct shape plug.

I'm bummed that I sold my original launch unit and bought the Daxter bundle. I have to say, with more perspective, I really prefer the black of the original to this color. Though it did have some other improvements, I've never really gotten over the bland color.

(Not my actual system)

I still can't believe this is the only affordable way to play Valkyrie Profile.

Sort it out Square, get it on PSN.

There's always going to be some title on physical PSP that isn't digital, that can only be played on PSP. That's the UMD bummer.

I made a mock-up of a goofy answer when Vita came out, something like this would have been cool in my book:

That's not bad. I got the Vader one. :|

Love my psp, I've been playing it lately to play games I missed out on during its run and can't get on the vita.

Great system, especially for RPGs. Lots of great games, but I also still have a big backlog.
The analog nub, though, is horrible, I hate when games force you to use it.

It's kinda sad to see that the best-selling game on the system wasn't even released outside Japan. I guess that already says much about its success in the West.

But the system gave us plenty of great games, even if many of them are ports, like the Ys and TitS games (well, the second one is upcoming). Plus Half-Minute Hero, great Disgaea ports, the Dracula X and Mega Man remakes and the Corpse Party and Badman games,

I picked up one of the 3000 models off Amazon a couple months back, just so I had one before Sony stops manufacturing them, if they haven't already? Seem to be drying up in stores. Anyway, I had traded in my PSP-2000 model not long after I got my Vita, figuring I would not need it anymore, but I had a huge pang of nostalgia to own one. Didn't get a PSP day 1, but instead day 2: I decided initially on waiting out the first run of hardware (even though I was somewhat obsessed with the thing at the time, I really wanted one but dead pixels and stuff), but I decided that I couldn't stand not playing Wipeout or Ridge Racer on the thing. I now own both of them digitally, and they're still really great games.

The weirdest thing I remember about the launch was how hard it was to get a copy of Untold Legends. It was sold out all over the place. It seemed like the hot game to have, and that makes no sense because it was a decent game, but far from the top launch game.

It's still a really nice piece of hardware and it holds up well - save for the apparently non-functioning web browser - and the games that don't require awkward replacements for the lack of the 2nd analog stick are still really playable. I mean sure, I could play them on Vita, but not everything is compatible and the games still look pretty good on the PSP's screen. It's all about dat feel or whatever. :p

I never picked one up and I don't intend to at this point since I ended up playing the God of War games as well as Peace Walker on PS3. There isn't really much that interests me on this system. That said, I'd really like to play Daxter and Patapon at some point.

Since this is a PSP collecting thread does anyone have a list of PSP games to buy? I want to make sure I have got them on my list.

Lot of great games on the PSP. Got endless hours out of MH, Patapon, Peace Walker, and the numerous JRPGs available for the system. It was a fantastic way to catch up on PS1 games (via download) and PS2 games (via port) that I'd missed. Nippon Ichi just showered that little system with ports, but I didn't mind.

Plus, me and my friends jailbroke (sp?) ours pretty early in its life. Loaded up tons of retro emulators. It was actually kinda fascinating to watch that scene develop new emulators, especially to watch the N64 stuff teeter on the edge of unplayable and playable.

Just started Valkyria Chronicles III last week and still waiting for fan translation of FF Type-0. Great system. I would say that with PSP we also saw the biggest graphics jump ever. From Snake (Phone) and GBA to almost PS2 like graphics back in 2005 was mindblowing.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.

No. The PSP2 selling like shit didn't help the PSP2, not the PSP having piracy/CFW.

Maybe if Sony actually supported their successor...

Yep, that's the one I have. It's very sharp, but it's been getting dusty since I got my Vita.

It's scary looking at my shelf, I think I have like 20 UMDs. Such a great system. Can't get rid of this handheld anytime soon.

The Vita is picking up steam real fast. There's a ton of games on the way, in both regions.

Imported a white 1000 model from Japan in 2005. I loved the system.

Someday I'd like to get a go or hopefully vita gets a smaller revision in a go form factor.

UMD felt so exclusive; that UMD-reader sound! 'Grrrrn'

If Vita had a built-in vibrator, it would be amazing if it utilized the vibration of the UMD-reader.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
So it's come to this.

I always disliked the PSP. I thought the lineup of games was awful for most of its life, the original hardware had a godawful screen and the worst d-pad of all time, and the commercials that Sony ran incessantly were universally terrible.

Well, okay. I've kinda come around to it. The PSP-3000 is pretty decent hardware. And eventually, there were some really cool games on the thing. I adore games like Ys Seven and Darius Burst. I really liked Crisis Core, and the Mega Man remakes were great. And there are quite a few games I still have yet to nab.

But then, I played so many awful games on the thing early on that just kinda soured my experience. Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins. Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, with its stretched out visuals. that Power Stone remake with the awful frame rate. Maybe I'm alone in this, but the reason I still haven't spent that much time playing PSP games, even on the 3000, is because the experience of playing games like these on the original PSP was so bad that I sort of just associate bad times with the system.

I have the red god of war psp. I use it to play old final fantasy games like 7 and 9. It's a great little system. Only reason I haven't picked up a vita is I don't want to have to pay an extra 100 bucks for a memory card.
