Name a game you like in a genre you don't like.

I got ridiculously into Fire Emblem for GBA despite not caring about JRPGs at all and finding handheld games uncomfortable to play. Though the strategy-game elements and having a Game Boy Player probably helped with that.

I beat the game like five times--I imagine well over 100 hours playtime total--and even went through the mind-numbingly tedious process of getting support conversations. I got like 2/3s of the supports by the time I was done with the game. I even enjoyed the storyline despite my usual aversion to anime tropes. Despite getting into that game, though, I did not enjoy the other Fire Emblems nearly as much. They all felt like imitations of that game, and I had already burned myself out on the GBA one.

Also, despite not caring about sports, I played an assload of NHL 94 for the Genesis.

Sometimes, playing a game outside your comfort zone can surprise you.

I don't like FPS games and I'm pretty awful at them overall. I get disoriented easily and I just really don't like the mechanic of aiming at things and shooting with the trigger or mouse button. Despite this I've still put well over 100 hours into the Halo series.

I hate driving simulators. But GranTurismo is fantastic.
I don´t play sport games. Except Nintendo World Cup for NES.

Doom II (FPS)

Vanquish(TPS)

RE4 if that counts (third person shooter? I always just call it action horror..but its a tps right? Whatever, semantics)

Warcraft III in RTS. Maybe I like the genre but I don't like learning everything again everytime I try a new game.

Fire Emblem is an srpg though.

Back on topic, i really liked Vanquish though don't care much for TPS, though thats probably because its unlike most of them.

Vanquish/Time Crisis/Gunslinger Stratos/Resident Evil in the shooter genre as a whole. I'm fine with some TPS games but the FPS games as a whole? I probably haven't found anything enjoyable except for maybe Metroid Prime.

I don't dislike fps genre but it's the genre I rarely play and not very good at, I have played a few on consoles and some multiplayer ones back in the 2000 (quake 3, UT), but I really enjoyed Halo 3 out of all the single player ones I've played, mostly because the maps are pretty open in a way so I had a lot of fun doing things differently and improvise, while other FPSes last gen were mostly corridors with a lot of crates, snipers, turret guns and moving to point B to stop/trigger enemy spawns like some kind of glorified shooting gallery games.

marvel vs capcom (though I have slowly been warming up to fighters more recently so I guess technically I don't dislike fighters)

Tetris. I don't like puzzle games that much, but I fraggin' love Tetris. It's the only puzzle game I can play and really feel like I'm having fun.

Sport games with the exception of FIFA series. I play it at work during breaks, a game or two since 2011 about every day. No signs of fatigue.

i find racing games tedious. well, i find car racing tedious in general. however if you can throw something else in there like crashing to get points or throwing items at people, then i'm hooked. burnout paradise is pretty rad because it's like an action-adventure game in a car.

I've had an absolute blast with almost every rendition of Soul Calibur I've played despite being otherwise wholly unequipped to play and/or overwhelmed by many other fighting games.

I've played 1000 hours of Dota 2, and have almost 0 interest in the moba genre otherwise. Dota is a teetering house of cards made out of an endless supply of constantly shifting game mechanics. It gets better the more you play it. Every other game in the genre seems to basically copy Dota or fuse it awkwardly with another genre. Who the hell has time to play all of these Dota clones, when Dota 2 is already out and just sitting there waiting to suck everyone's time forever.

Game: League of Legends
Genre: ARTS/MOBA

Dota AS and HoNs have a Tekken-like barrier to entry in that you have to memorize the skillsets of the roster to avoid getting combo-ed to death and immediately losing the game for the team. LoL mitigates this with, ironically, a paywall.

Resident Evil 4 is probably the only third person action game that has held my attention, and I have enjoyed throughout. I've played others that I appreciated like Uncharted 2, Kane and Lynch 2 but eh. They weren't memorable for me in the slightest. I don't see it as a problem with the genre but more the perspective. I feel more comfortable in first person.

Never thought about it like that. I'm curious how you felt about Crazy Taxi or other similar arcade racers?

Fighting Games: Super Smash Bros.
Racing Games: F-Zero (and to a lesser degree, Mario Kart)
Cave Shooters: Resogun (that counts as a cave shooter, right?)
Metroidvania:
Just kidding, all Metroidvania games are awesome.

Definitely, NFL Blitz, it's a sports game that doesn't take itself seriously and I loved it for that. I've only played the N64 & arcade versions so I can't speak for the later games.

I don't really like kart racers, but this one did everything right. Very fun game.

I don't normally like puzzle games at all, but the Portal games are swell.

This. I gave up on Catherine after discovering it was a puzzle game, I hate seeing puzzle sections in other genres (fuck you and your stupid puzzles, GoW) but Portal is great.
