Zero Escape 3 (VLR sequel) "difficult to realize", problems with funding

aww yiss I tracked down a copy of 999 :D

had to drive out half an hour to get it but i finally have it. Lets do this!

I hope you know what you're getting into. Some people blindly listen to the hype without knowing what kind of game it is, or that it requires multiple playthroughs to complete the story.

well i had played through a bit of VLR and loved it...didn't know it required multiple playthroughs though.

Yes. Both 999 and VLR require multiple playthroughs.

There are spoiler-free guides on how to get the endings for 999 (all named for the icons that show up after unlocking, minus true). If I were to recommend an order, then I'd say...

Knife --> Axe --> Sub (go through Door 3 to get it for extra story; will automatically take you to Door 2 afterward, which always leads to that ending on its own anyway otherwise) --> Safe --> True

Coffin ending isn't strictly necessary (was worth it for the "wait, what!?" effect that the opening line in the teaser trailer accompanying it had), but I got that one first back when I started the game.

Really can't see why they couldn't emulate the two screens or just split it.

You guys are being silly with the "there's no way it could work!"

It really wouldnt ruin it any more than taking all the game-play out would.

does the order really matter? o__o

It is. The bottom screen
has a green filter over it to represent Sigma's robotic eye.
I'm a bit late in responding to this, but this is true. I just didn't see it as important as the second screen was to 999 (whether that's justified, I'll leave open to debate).

As I've mentioned earlier, I would've been fine with them doing that for ports, and would've much preferred it to the complete lack of effort for everything that the iOS version represents.

I'd still recommend saving Safe for second to last. Everything else, not necessarily, more for the sake of what would have the most impact, subjective as that may be (I recommended Knife first because it was the most underwhelming).

Hey,
I thought I'd share this here if it's OK - yesterday I chatted with Uchikoshi-san on FB about eg, what VN's I'm playing (R11), previously he was very happy to hear I loved Ever 17.
Anyway, in response to one message (though I didnt actually ask about ZE3) he posted this:

'At present we are making efforts to bear the good news for all fans. Please give us some time. I appreciate your continuous support. Thanks in advance.'

What does that mean? At least it sounds hopeful.

I think he's just saying "we're trying and we hope we'll have good news" in a roundabout japanese-english way. Doubt there's anything to it.

Yeah, I think so too. I'm sure he's getting loads of questions about ZE3. It must be tricky for him to answer with his limited English.
But at least he replied to me and that's something. :)

So yeah, don't think ZE3 is happening any time soon.

No.

No.

Please no? ;-;

VLR spoilers:
Why did you have to end it on a cliffhanger, why!? Why couldn't you have given it a nice, wrapped up ending like 999, that still left a little bit of room for a sequel? I wouldn't be nearly as upset if this happened...

Well that's um, that's kind of what he flat out said before. As in, I don't think that's surprising, he did say that before. I mean he said it in those words pretty much. Just saying.

Mages? Oh boy. That means no release on Nintendo platforms + chances of localisation really slim. Fantastic. Just fantastic. : /

But then again, I thought he was already done with that project... I remember him talkin about it back in 2012.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Yea, Axe was my first ending, and though I haven't played to earn all six endings yet(or even Safe+true), the two other endings I have seen were kind of underwhelming comparatively. I think I just saw Knife, Axe, and Sub so far.

Still gotta get back to it, but the slog to see the rest is a pain even with fast forward. I hear VLR is much better in this regard.

What is Mages ?

So I beat 999 a few days ago (pretty good!) and I was wondering what was VLR's recommended platform. Is there anything significant added to the seconds screen in the 3DS version?

Wow wow wow wait a second man now we're getting into dangerous territory. I'll really start getting scared.

He already said back when he started talking about the state of ZE3 that he's currently working on another project...

They published Steins;Gate.

I know I'm probably overreacting, but I don't remember many of their games getting localised... if at all (only one I can think of is Steins;Gate).

If it was Zero Escape 3, we'd know Aksys would localise the game.

I got it for 3DS and don't really see anything that couldn't be done on the Vita other than the notes app on the 3DS.

Also, the audio for the voice acting on the 3DS (at least on the eshop download) sounds unclear and bad even with headphones. I'm not sure if that's the same case for the retail release or Vita version though.

The parent company for 5pb. Games, who do a lot of visual novels, but very few of them for Nintendo systems.
Oh dang, then no localization is a given. But then that also might mean a big scale Uchikoshi VN. As long as it's on PC a translation can happen.

I guess it won't be on PC...

It's the same. They went with a smaller-sized card to save money, so the audio was further compressed. It's not unclear for me, but it's a considerable drop versus the Vita version.

And when his new title resembles the Zero Esacpe series in any way, you can be certain that Aksys would try to bring that over too. Whether or not it's on a Nintendo platform: Quite frankly, who cares? Chunsoft's management interferred with the direction of VLR -- if he's able to develop the kind of game he actually wants at Mages than I'm all for it, regardless of the platform.

Anyway, we don't even know if he actually left Chunsoft. It might also be a collab between the two companies. And it's not like Uchikoshi didn't contribute to a 5pb game before, either...

Nah, it's quite likely there's going to be a PC version.

By the way, is that the new project Uchikoshi mentionned when talking about ZE3 troubles? The project that, if successful, will probably make his superiors change their mind about ZE3?

Guess it's a Spike-Chunsoft/Mages collaboration, then.

Well, whatever happens, I wish Uchikoshi good luck. Wouldn't mind no localisation and/or Nintendo release if his new game was sucessful :)

Never expect a 5pb game to be localized, even if Uchikoshi is directing. There's already a precedent with Ever17's console release.

It's at least not impossible. I mean, a company as small as Xseed was able to get two Corpse Party games from them. There's at least a chance!

Oh well. No use fretting over it right now. I honestly didn't expect ZE3 for a few years, if that.

But now I wish Uchikoshi had written VLR like 999 where it could be its own stand alone title. He got too ambitious and made it so the story HAD to continue.

Steins;Gate just came out in English and XSEED doesn't seem to have a problem publishing the Corpse Party games, either, so it's definitely not impossible.

I don't think Ever17 is a good precedent for anything, really. The PSP and PS2 versions came out before VNs took off outside of Japan and it's only recent release is on 360 -- which is the worst possible platform for its kind of game. Not to mention that most people who are interested in it bought (or just downloaded...) the PC version anyway.

Regarding Uchikoshi working with Mages (Steins;Gate) on a new title:

http://kotaku.com/how-true-are-japans-latest-gaming-rumors-1561689567

Rumor: Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward director Kotaro Uchikoshi is going to break his silence and announce a new game developed with the company MAGES.

Details: Asked directly, Uchikoshi stated, "Yes, it's true. I'm working with MAGES. on my latest project. They're currently working on the game system. The scenario is already complete and, personally, I'm very proud of it!"

Validity: 100% — Please let it be the sequel of Virtue's Last Reward.

A more detailed report from Gematsu doesn't seem to confirm it to be ZE3, though.

http://gematsu.com/2014/04/famitsu-feature-truth-rumors-2014

24. Koutarou Uchikoshi is working on a new game at Mages.

Although he’s still working for Spike Chunsoft, Uchikoshi unambiguously told Famitsu that he is indeed collaborating with Steins;Gate developer Mages on a new game and that the scenario is already complete. He went on to say it’ll be a “sexual comedy” set to a science fiction suspense fantasy. As one might expect from him, he has high hopes that the game will turn out well.

Famitsu’s Plausibility: 100%

"Sexual comedy" doesn't really fit a ZE3 game.

This series is one of my favorites. I hope it continues sometime or at least something similar comes out. For me, everything about the games gelled together and the end result was something amazing.

We knew from the very start that he was working on a non-ZE title currently, so I'm not sure why people are surprised.

He said if this does well it will potentially give him more clout to get back to ZE3.

I loved 999 and only sorta liked VLR. Am I the only person who feels that way? I dont know VLR I just gave up after a couple endings I wasnt nearly as hooked. Maybe the first game was more horror like (well at least to me for most part before true ending) the music was sort of haunting as well. I always played it late at night. I LOVED 999 music. The second one I didnt feel that dread. I dont know maybe im crazy.

I would like another game though. Id buy it.

The consensus is definitely on the side of preferring 999, one of the reasons being your concern about tone. Though I don't think many others actually quit the game haha
