That sounds great for Gameplay, but it may set the story back. Hard to give VO to characters that can vary so wildly.

I can hear all of their voices in my head. SMAC's world building was just... praiseworthy.
Live for the Swarm!

So hype now. The tech tree web, differing ideologies and such sound amaaazing!
"Imagine the entire contents of the planetary datalinks, the sum total of human knowledge, blasted into the Planetmind's fragile neural network with the full power of every reactor on the planet. Thousands of years of civilization compressed into a single searing burst of revelation. That is our last-ditch attempt to win humanity a reprieve from extinction at the hands of an awakening alien god."
-- Academician Prokhor Zakharov, "Planet Speaks"

In a nutshell that's why I think so highly of SMAC.

Not going to lie. As someone who has put 350+ hours into Civ V and still play it every couple of days, I'm a bit disappointed. I'll withhold further judgment till we get actual gameplay/more details, but half of the fun is the historical aspect.

Very nice trailer. Will get day 1, even if that means paying a lot on the DLC later on. I wonder if there will be a narrator or voice-over on the Technologies and things like that.

the five victories from the gamespot article:

Harmony: awaken a semi-sentient super organism within the planet and reach a new level of consciousness
Purity: terraform the alien planet into a mirror of Earth and relocate Earth’s populace to this new Eden
Supremacy: embrace cybernetic augmentation, then return to Earth and "free" the people from their bodies
Contact: discover evidence of intelligent life and construct a means to establish first contact
Domination: actually, domination is the same as in every other Civilization

This is bloody brilliant!

oh man this is going to be great

This could or should easily be my GOTY depending on how it turn out. It's the unofficial sequel to Alpha Centauri which I never expected. On paper, it sound amazing and the setting will make it so that it could be my ideal strategy game. :D

thats true but tbh civ 6 would feel way too soon. CIV V and this game can easily sit along side each other.

But don't you have Civ V for that? Beyond earth isn't a numbered main release so it seems to be a spin off for people who liked games like Alpha Centauri. Perhaps Civilization: Beyond Earth will become its own series within the Civilization name?

Color me intrigued. I like the aesthetic so far, but it's going to be the faction personalities that are going to sell me on this game. Can't wait to see what they have in store.

Wired piece with 4 members of the development team.

Interstellar Oregon Trail
In the game’s fiction, humanity has endured some rough times on Earth due to an ambiguous event known as The Great Mistake. We survived but were greatly hobbled, and Earth just wasn’t the same anymore. As civilization recovered, we sent our best and brightest to create a new home.

This is where you come in.

The game begins with something Firaxis likens to “interstellar Oregon Trail.” Ordinarily in a Civilization game, you select your leader from a series of historically-based archetypes like Genghis Khan or Hiawatha. But since Beyond Earth takes place in the future, the player is given more freedom to affect how events play out.

I got SMAC from GOG recently and I feel I'll have to give it a (good) whirl before CivBE releases. It'll be interesting to see what elements from Civ and SMAC coalesce into the new release.

stop port begging

this is getting to be as bad as a WiiU game announcement thread

How is this port begging? The game literally just got announced and console gamers are disappointed. Get off your high horse. Like you would't be mad if it was PS3 exclusive.

My iMac can barely run Civ 5.

I fear I won't play this until it's $5 on Steam cause I am in no rush to upgrade my computer because I do all of my gaming on my PS4.
