This all sounds great, along with the wildly different paths to victory. But will it have an alien throne room??
the five victories from the gamespot article:
Harmony: awaken a semi-sentient super organism within the planet and reach a new level of consciousness
That sounds great for Gameplay, but it may set the story back. Hard to give VO to characters that can vary so wildly.
"Imagine the entire contents of the planetary datalinks, the sum total of human knowledge, blasted into the Planetmind's fragile neural network with the full power of every reactor on the planet. Thousands of years of civilization compressed into a single searing burst of revelation. That is our last-ditch attempt to win humanity a reprieve from extinction at the hands of an awakening alien god."Live for the Swarm!
So hype now. The tech tree web, differing ideologies and such sound amaaazing!

I still play AC. Love this....That sounds great for Gameplay, but it may set the story back. Hard to give VO to characters that can vary so wildly.
I can hear all of their voices in my head. SMAC's world building was just... praiseworthy.

Harmony: awaken a semi-sentient super organism within the planet and reach a new level of consciousness
Purity: terraform the alien planet into a mirror of Earth and relocate Earths populace to this new Eden
Supremacy: embrace cybernetic augmentation, then return to Earth and "free" the people from their bodies
Contact: discover evidence of intelligent life and construct a means to establish first contact
Domination: actually, domination is the same as in every other Civilization
oh man this is going to be great
thats true but tbh civ 6 would feel way too soon. CIV V and this game can easily sit along side each other. Not going to lie. As someone who has put 350+ hours into Civ V and still play it every couple of days, I'm a bit disappointed. I'll withhold further judgment till we get actual gameplay/more details, but half of the fun is the historical aspect.

I don't know how Alpha Centauri they're going, but man that looks a lot like Alpha Centauri.
Day One
Do physical versions of Civ games have Steam keys? Love the box art.
there is no reason why civ V and beyond earth cant come to consoles, its a 2 button game.
PC only?! Son of a bitch.
Thanks.Civilization V does - so I assume this does.
(For future reference, games that support retail redemption on Steam: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601#which)
$49.99 feels like an exception rather than the rule these days.

this is getting to be as bad as a WiiU game announcement thread
Playing with a controller would be a giant pain in the ass.
Interstellar Oregon Trail
In the games fiction, humanity has endured some rough times on Earth due to an ambiguous event known as The Great Mistake. We survived but were greatly hobbled, and Earth just wasnt the same anymore. As civilization recovered, we sent our best and brightest to create a new home.
This is where you come in.
The game begins with something Firaxis likens to interstellar Oregon Trail. Ordinarily in a Civilization game, you select your leader from a series of historically-based archetypes like Genghis Khan or Hiawatha. But since Beyond Earth takes place in the future, the player is given more freedom to affect how events play out.
