Remote Play Thread: Play PS4 games on Vita/VitaTV via WiFi at home or away

I am very tempted... Or should I wait for the 2k in Europe.... :-/

For only 150$ you not only get a OLED Vita with a 8GB MC, but you also get Tearaway for free...A GREAT DEAL MAN :)

Tearaway is a great game and getting some memory for games (you will need to get a memory card but with the deal having the Vita for 150$, you can use the extra 50-70$ toward a 32/64 (if you don't mind importing) card) is very, very great.

I don't own a PS4, so I can't say how good the remote play is, but from videos I saw online, it is MUCH better than the PS3 remote play :).

I could really use some help . I have been searching for answers to my problem and have not found any yet. I can use remote play just fine and I think it works really good with Ground Zeroes and second son but no matter what I try I can not get it to work when the PS4 is in stand by mode. Every time I attempt too , the vita says " Turning on Ps4 system" but goes straight to a error page . I have checked and double checked that I have done everything right yet it still wont work. Strange thing is It worked for me no problem when I first got the system. Only thing i can think of is that when I created a European account and made the ps4 the primary console for that account it somehow screwed me up. Since then I have deactivated the console and removed the European account, reactivated the console under my US account, and have reset the remote play settings on the vita while repeating the initial setup.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Played the last two hours of infamous second son on remote play since my wife was using the tv. It worked quite well. I really love this feature.

Help. My Vita and PS4 connect fine at home. But not while at work.
I have Comcast internet, and a Linksys WRT54GS. Direct connect is OFF on PS4. PS4 is not direct connected to router.

When at work my Vita attemps to connect via the internet and I think it succeeds. I think.....Then it goes to "Checking the connection environment".............then fails. What gives GAF? :(

You think it connects? Why don't you try opening the Vita's browser?...

Make sure you have UPnP enabled on your home router and/or set the port forwarding on your router:

The port numbers that are used by remote play are 9295 (for TCP), and 9296 and 9297 (for UDP). If these ports are unavailable, it might be possible to use ports 9295~9304 (for TCP and UDP).

Has anyone checked the bandwitdh usage that RP when gaming away from home?

I have unlimited bandwith at home so sending isn't a problem. However, if I'm at a place where I want to play my PS4 remotely, I don't want to eat my "host's" limit.

Same thing for my LTE connection, I don't want my bill to go off the roof.

So did it actually find my PS4?

Yes. It found it and is trying to turn it on or make the actual connection.

I've had mine time out during "connection environment" step because it was taking too long to turn on. A second attempt immediately after would usually work.

I have not been able to connect my ps4 away from my house, although I've been trying to connect from pretty far away (over 150km away).

Has anyone managed to connect from a significant distance?

Pretty sure there was a member who connected to their PS4 in Japan while visiting the US.

That being said it was super laggy but still connected

Web browsing is fine. Remote play is the problem

Ok, so in my router settings, add port 9295 and the PS4's IP correct?

I tried to play with my PS4 over the internet yesterday, but it just doesn't work. The Vita doesn't find the PS4. I've already tried a few things, to no avail. Here's a bulletpoint list, maybe someone here had a similar setup.

  • Remote Play works flawlessly over WiFi, just not over the internet
  • PS4 connected wia WiFi (LAN is not possible currently), 2.4 GHz, 802.11g, static IP.
  • The router of the PS4 network is an Asus RT-N66U running Asuswrt-merlin version 3.0.0.4.374.40 (latest)
  • All necessary options on the PS4 are enabled
  • UPnP is on. I also tried explicitely forwarding the necessary ports.
  • I just put the PS4 in the DMZ. Still doesn't work
  • In the Vita network, UPnP is also on
  • I don't know if it's related, but it might be worth mentioning that the PlayStation iOS app doesn't find the PS4 either. But like the Vita, it does so when I'm in the same network.
Anything else I could try? The only thing I can think of is pairing the devices again when I'm back home.

So, I got home and made sure UPnP was enabled and added the port 9245 with the PS4's IP address. Went to my aunt house to use her WIFI and boom it worked......and worked pretty flawlessly. My only question is, since my router setup using "Automatic Configuration DHCP", will it auto change my PS4 IP?

Edit: Still wont work at the job. Might have something to do with the firewall settings here. :(

probably a dumb question about remote play, but let's say the wife was using the PS4 to watch netflix on the main tv, does remote play on the vita or vita tv allow me to still play a game while she is using PS4's netflix on the main tv, or will me using remote play prevent her from using the actual PS4 from another operation? thanks

Prevent her.

PS4 could only do one of those activities at one time, so you could play a game via remote play or your wife could watch netflix on your PS4, not both

If you had another netflix device though she could watch netflix via that and you could remoteplay your game

Holy crap.. I did not think I needed this feature, but damn, it works really well. I've played quite a large part of infamous second son on psvita now and it works really really well

I wish the wifi on the vita was better. Sometimes it works flawlessly across the house to my room p, most times it craps out after a few minutes. Works great when just outside of my room but would really have liked that extra more feet of consistent reception

Update: I tried using my phone as a mobile hotspot. Surprisingly, the Vita did indeed connect to my PS4. So the remote router must be the culprit.

edit: I didn't change any settings of the Vita's router, but nevertheless "Checking the connection environment" appears. Previously, it never went that far. However, after a few seconds I got a message, saying the Vita's bandwidth was too low. That's not possible; I'm sitting right next to the router with a 50mbit/s connection.
That message appeared only on the first attempt, though. Now after the connection environment step, it just goes back to the "Which feature do you want to use?" screen.

edit 2: Aww, crap. I just realized my upload bandwidth is just 1mbit/s. I thought it was 4. That must be the issue, no?

I tried to give remote play a second chance this morning and it is worse than before. Can someone help?

I moved my modem and router to my entertainment center this morning in order to give Remote Play a go with the PS4 plugged directly into my router. My previous experiences with RP were through direct connect (bad) and over wireless (worse).

For the purposes of this post, the key takeaway from these experiences are that they both worked to some degree. Once I plugged the PS4 into the router, remote play didn't work at all.

The PS4 had internet access. The Vita had internet access. Both were connected to PSN. The PS4 required a settings change to switch from wireless to LAN and that was fine. It is connected to the internet. I re-paired my Vita to the PS4. Nothing.

The Vita found the PS4 and then stalled out in the second step, where it was checking the system environment. The PS4 system was on the main menu so there shouldn't have been any trouble from there. I forwarded ports to the PS4, (something like 9295 for TCP and 9296-7 for UDF... I don't remember exactly but I followed some instruction from GameFAQs). Again, nothing.

I'm not really savvy with this stuff, but it seems weird that RP works (however poorly) over with the PS4 on the wifi and doesn't work at all plugged in over LAN, with the same modem and the same router.

Educated thoughts?

Answering my own question, I had the PS4 plugged into the modem instead of the router.

Remote Play does indeed work like a charm plugged into the wall. I should have moved my router to the entertainment center a while ago.

Of course the problems with 30fps, much reduced visuals, and missing buttons still exist, but the connection was the most solid it's ever been. Played through a level of Resogun with no issues.

Vita was charging within Wii U range so I'll have to give it a spin further away later and from work tomorrow. Between the Wii U and a PS4 RP connection this solid, RPG grinding is going to be a real treat this gen.

Good to hear you got it working :)

RP on Vita has it flaws for sure but it sounds like a real nice addition to both systems

So, I've been trying every month since launch to get remote play working AT ALL for me and it just doesn't work. Whether it's directly connected to the PS4, over my wifi network, or over the internet, I've not once been able to play a game for more than two minutes MAX before it craps out on me with full blown connection issues. I get heavy lag, a garbled screen, and a little gray bad connection icon in the top left corner of the screen. If I try to keep playing in hopes that it fixes itself, it eventually gives up and disconnects. It's been completely unplayable since day one.

I have a launch day PS4 from Amazon and a launch day 3G/Wifi Vita. I've tried every solution on the internet (uPnP, port forwarding, QoS, static IP, etc.), I bought a new router (Linksys E2500), got a new modem (Xfinity's wifi station running in bridge mode), I have the system hooked up via Ethernet to the router and nothing works. I've tried switching between 2.4ghz and 5ghz, I've set every channel available, etc. It won't even work over direct connect! I can sit right next to the PS4 and it will have connection issues shortly after starting. I can connect over the internet from another location, and it still craps out on me (granted I've only tried this once). I have 50mbps cable internet, so speed isn't a problem.

The only thing I can possibly think of is maybe it's because I live in an apartment (on the top floor, if that matters). But I've never had any wifi traffic issues before and we have very thick walls. I've tried turning off everything in my apartment that uses wifi and nothing changes.

Has anyone else had these problems? I hear so many great things about remote play being a flawless, legitimate gaming experience, but I've never once been able to use it as more than a one minute gimmick.

Hoping that someone can help me here, though considering how many things I've tried over the past five months, I don't know what anyone else could suggest. Maybe I should call Sony? Don't know if they'd be any help, but everyone else's positive results with remote play leaves me wondering if this isn't some sort of hardware problem on my end.

Is Sony planning to allow use of a DS4 with remote play? This seems like a simple update. Also maybe a TV out function if they don't release VitaTV here in the US. I travel a lot for work and this would be HUGE.

If you're close enough to the physical PS4 you can do this now.

Was there ever a solution for people with an AirPort Extreme router? Aside from buying a new router of course lol.

None that I ever found. I sold my AE and bought an Asus AC router a few months ago on a super sale.

Dammit, so the AE doesn't work at all?! :( I've been having a bunch of issues trying to get it working recently, the only thing I can think to do is use my virgin media router for the PS4 and essentially run 2 networks in the house... Not ideal though.

It kinda sucks that the Vita turns on the PS4 even when the bandwidth is too low for Remote Play. Not being able to actually connect means one cannot turn it off anymore remotely.

While that is indeed a truly poor outcome, can you set the PS4 to turn off or go into standby after a certain amount of inactivity?

Or can you turn off your PS4 with the phone app?

Yeah, maybe there's a setting for that, I'll have a look.

Regarding the app: Yes, that's indeed possible, but only if you're connected to the same WiFi network. Or rather, at least for me it only finds the PS4 when I'm at home - I don't actually know if the PS app is supposed to connect to the PS4 remotely.

I can't say 100% for sure that there isn't a solution, I know a few months ago when I sold mine there wasn't one though.

What is the general concesus over the performance of remote play via internet connection?

Ofcourse assuming that both PS4 and the place you are with Vita have a good internet support.

Is it stable, can you have a respectable experience? I know there will be some lag, but the main thing is, is it enjoyable and more importantly, trouble-free?

Would appreciate any replies ;)

If you can can get it working (and that's a big IF) it's pretty good. I wouldn't play an online multiplayer game that way as it really bogs down the streaming but a good single player game should be fine. Most of the time the issues that I have with it is how the controls get adapted to the vita. Sometimes, it's done really well whereas there are a few games where it seems like little to no thought was put into it.

Is there a way to force my Vita to connect via my router when I'm home instead of directly to the PS4?

It has "Connect directly with PS Vita: If you turn on this setting a PS Vita can connect directly to this PS4 using Wi-Fi. This setting is available only when you connect using Remote Play."

But I imagine that's for if I want to connect via wi-fi and I'm outside of my house.

Whenever I try to remote play home it always 100% of the time attempts to connect to my PS4 directly.
