Games That Shattered Your Expectations (aka surprise hits)

Have you ever played a game that you weren't expecting to be anything out of the ordinary?
Have you ever played a game that absolutely destroyed your expectations to the point of you being left in a state of complete disbelief?

Some of them might have turned out to be all time favourites while others might have not. The key word here is expectations.

If the answer is yes, share your experiences here.

First of all I would like to start with the end all be all breaker of expectations for me:

Let's jump back to early 2013
I had heard good things about this game from youtube videos and other folk on the internet. I didn't think much of it, I thought it was going to be a good game with a decent story, an enjoyable experience overall but nothing to write home about..
Boy was I wrong....

I started playing this in conjunction with Ys Seven to have something different going on to compliment the fast paced nature of Ys.. Well I started it at 18:00, right in the beginning of the evening. The setting was intriguing and it was enough to make me get past the rather annoying first puzzle(I was not used to a lot of point and click games by this time so I had a hard time finding some of the items to progress), the logic needed to do the puzzle however was intuitive and I enjoyed it.. Got past the first room and then met the characters. The soundtrack started kicking in for real, characters were established and the twists began immediately, there was one twist right after the first puzzle that immediately got me hooked.

The setting, characters, story, twists and turns, the atmosphere, the dread, everything about this game was surreal and completely unbelievably good. I played until about 4 in the morning, reached my first ending and got halfway through another playthrough(in which you can skip text you previously read so it's really quick), went to bed completely high on the game, I was floored and couldn't wait to wake up and continue.
When I woke up the first thing I did was turn on my ds and continue.. I played until 4 am again only stopping to eat and go to the bathroom when I needed. I finished the game and got all endings and the game blew me away in every step of the way. It had been the best narrative I had ever experienced, I proceeded to obsess over the game for a few weeks by constantly listening to the soundtrack and getting other people I knew to play it(I succeeded in getting my brother and two of my friends to play it and they also loved it.).

Ternary Game - This is an example of the atmosphere drenching nature of the OST. It's not very effective outside of context for people who never played the game but I guarantee that this is one of the most immersive OST's in a game.

This particular game ended up being an all time favourite and it still remains to this day the most impactful gaming experience I ever had.

I know it might seem weird that these were a surprise hit but hear me out.
So I only jumped into the MGS bandwagon in 2012. This was a time where my internet lurking did not include gaming related stuff for the most part, I was completely ignorant about the magnitude of the franchise. All I knew was that this was a game that my brothers had played when they were teens and I was a little kid. I remember that they loved this game and I had faint memories of cool looking boss fights and stuff. Fast forward to 2012 and now my eldest brother buys Metal Gear Solid 2(they kinda dropped out of gaming during he early 2000's , my eldest brother must have been feeling nostalgic and he wanted to see what the sequels were all about.), well he bought it and he played through the tanker chapter and dropped it for some reason, however my other older brother played through the entire game and I watched a few parts of it here and there and the narrative was super compelling(this is when I found out the MGS games were very story heavy, I thought they were gameplay oriented stealth games).

With that I decided to get the first MGS for my psp and see what the fuss was all about.. I struggled with the gameplay early on because this was my first experience with a stealth game but the narrative, voice acting and long cutscenes pulled me in completely. I could not stop playing this game. The gameplay was tons of fun too with great boss fights and a lot of imaginative ways to tackle problems. In every step of the way I was completely baffled that a non RPG game had such a great story(in 2012 let's just say that my knowledge of gaming in general was very limited and it was playing games like MGS that made me crazy about gaming and basically it's a central part of my life now.).
I finished it in 2 days and I had to immediately start up MGS 2.. Playing MGS 2 was like reaching a new level of enlightment.. I was completely blown away by all the twists, philosofical commentary and level of complexity of the story.. I played it in a single sitting and jesus fucking christ was it good.. Another one of my all time favourites. MGS 1 shattered expectations because I was ignorant about the series, MGS 2 shattered expectations when they were already sky high coming off of MGS 1.
Of course in the vacinity of 2 days I bought MGS 3 for the ps2 and also played it in a few sittings but it didn't raise the bar after MGS 2.

I have a few more examples but I want to leave those for later because I don't want to make this OP too long.

I seem to recall knowing very little about Borderlands 1 until just before release. Was surprised at how much I enjoyed it

The Last of Us.

That intro made such an impression on me, I had tears in my eyes
when I saw Joel's little girl die in his arms.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

At the time I hadn't played an SH game yet, so I didn't really know what to expect, plus reviews were somewhat mixed.

It ended up being in my top 3 games of last gen and possibly my favourite story in a videogame!

Never played a mafia game before and saw it on the cheap.....turned out to be one of the best TPS last gen, story was okay, but the individual gameplay scenarios were fantastic

I didn't expect Nier to be so damn good and have the emotional punches it does. Then I replayed it and felt even worse.

Fantastic experience.

I got this game when I got a Nintendo DSi for my birthday in 2009.

All I ever knew about it was that it was a new game from Nintendo, it had funny little rhythm games, and there was that one commercial with Beyonce.

What I didn't expect was a game that equally entertained me with its mechanics, while also kicking the crap out of me for failing, and stomping me while I was down until I became better.

Also, the songs. The songs may seem stupid, but play them for a while, and they just get really catchy. In a way, this game kinda gave me an ear for rhythm in all the songs I listen to. Almost surreal, even.

I'd also toss in Rhythm Heaven Fever on Wii, but this is truly THE game that got me interested in rhythm games. Of course, a year later, I'd pick up yet another rhythm gaming gem on the DS:

GJ9W5aP.jpg

Seriously, if you're an owner of a Nintendo DS and don't own this, or Rhythm Heaven, you're dead to me. DEAD.

And I thought Rhythm Heaven was merciless? World Class mode on EBA had me crying at one point because I kept messing up over and over and over again.

Great rhythm game, had some nice renditions of classic songs, and the humor was pretty awesome. I don't play it as much as I do now, but I have Osu on my PC to fill that need. I still need to get Ouendan 2 someday.

This. I was cautiously optimistic after they changed the artstyle and some gameplay mechanics from the Game Informer reveal but holy shit those changes were a very good choice. I fell in love with Pandora and spent many an hour with this game. It also had some of the best DLC of all time, specifically General Knoxx's Armory, so good.

Another game that smashed my expectations:

Tales_of_Symphonia_case_cover.jpg

Tales of Symphonia. Reading the previews in Game Informer promted me to get this game, especially since my GameCube desperately needed an RPG I could sink some time into. Man, what a great fucking purchase. I sunk countless hours into Tales and it introduced me to the series as well.

Marvel

could never
Dark Souls.

I thought it would be kind of shit... it wasn't. One of the best games I've ever played.

plants vs zombies garden warfare was a huge surprise for me, up until a week/days before its release we had very little in previews and gameplay vids so I expected it to be meh/garbage .
but after watching a twitch stream I had to get it that day and I'm glad I did

I've played garden warfare more then titanfall

I usually only buy games I think I'll really enjoy, with the exception of steam sales.

That said, Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Was expecting nothing but disappointment from the moment the first concept art was released. Ended up being one of my favorite games last gen.

I got Deadly Premonition because all of the reviews made it seemed like a laugh riot.

Did not expect to be nearly bawling my eyes out by the end. Such a remarkable game.

Kingdom Hearts 2

I hated the first one (still do, complete garbage level design). But then KH2 completely blew me away. I finished it more than 4 times. it's one of the best action games ever, especially on critical difficulty.

Kind of an easy choice and one I'm surprised hasn't been picked yet. I didn't expect much from this, seeing how it was a new Batman game by a developer most didn't really know about and most of the Batman games had been mediocre or shit. So the demo being great was a pretty big surprise.

Ni No Kuni! Knew it was going to be good but not that good, it's the first RPG that I just haven't been able to put down since the PS2 days. Legitimately my favourite game of all time. I still feel it was incredibly underrated which sucks, hoping for another in the not too distant future!

Mafia 1 is even better. They should just make an HD remake of that game.

Dishonored - Loved the concept from the E3 video. I held off buying the game for a bit though. But when I got my copy and started playing it I couldn't stop until I had played through the story 3 times.

GTA IV - I know a lot of people don't like this game. Its too grey, not AS ridiculous as the previous games, etc. But I honestly didn't like previous GTA's too much and didn't expect much from IV because of it. Mainly because of the controls. I liked the characters, game world and music of 3, Vice City and San Andreas, but I couldn't stand the controls for moving around and aiming. IV fixed most of this apart except the car controls got worse. It was enough for me to enjoy the game though and play all the way through.

Freedom Fighters - I rented this when I was a teenager and got my first PS2. I was expecting NOTHING from this game. Most of you know how good this game is, so I will spare the lecture. But it was a serious gem finding moment for me.

Omega Boost - A private video rental store near me was selling off its ex rentals and I found this while going through them for about $4 I think. I wasn't expecting anything from it, the screenshots on the back cover just made it look like an okay mech game. Wow was I impressed. Excellent controls and satisfying shooting mechanics. Then I found out it was made by Polyphony Digital between Gran Turismo 1 and 2. Another gem finding moment.

Euro Truck Sim 2 - I love driving, but I never expected to get addicted to a truck sim game. I bought it thinking it would make a fun couple hours, but it was good. I hooked up my Logitech wheel. It was better. Then I found a radio station I liked on the awesome in-game internet radio settings. Soon I was spending hour trucking around listening to tunes.

Dead Rising 3 - I thought this would be a train wreck and kill the series. As someone who loves DR, it was a very decent and fun DR game.

Red Steel 2 - Excellent motion controls, a good art style, fun combat. I thought it would be worst than the first game, its one of the reasons I kept my Wii during the droughts of last gen.

P4G. It seemed like a lot of people liked it so thought I would try it, having never touched a Persona game before. Didn't expect it to be one of the greatest games ever.

I did not care for Far cry 3 after Far cry 2 (ugh) but once i played it it was one of my Favorite games of 2012.

I am a big Rockstar nut but i was always cold on the Remedy Max Payne games but once Max Payne 3 came out i did not think i would complete it multiple times on both PS3 & PC what a game!

Suikoden 2

This was a random purchase that I had no expectations of. In fact, I'm pretty sure it took months before I even played it.

It ended up being my most favorite game of all time. I've lost track of how many times I've replayed it.

There's just something about the characters that pulls me in. It's an incredible feat to have more than 108 characters and not to have majority of them have the personality of cardboard boxes.

Silent Hill 2

Made me appreciate the psychological aspects of not just video games but all other media as well.

I was merely expecting a horror game and I got so much more out of it. The SH games are rife with symbolism which is one of the reasons why I enjoy them so much.

Gex, on the 3DO. I bought it on day one, but thinking it'd be just another run-of-the-mill platformer. Almost twenty years later and I still play it regularly.

A more recent example was Elder Scrolls Online. Thought it was mediocre in the beta, wound up loving it.

FFVII, Warcraft III, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Plants Vs. Zombies (the mobile one), Resogun, Tomb Raider, and Infamous: Second Son certainly fit the bill. I was about to skip all of them, except Resogun as it's a PS+ game, because they just didn't seem like my kind of games. Boy, was I wrong.

Dishonored and Deus Ex 3. I got both of them on a whim because the atmosphere looked interesting but both are basically my favorite games last gen along with Bioshock.

The Wonderful 101. I had no expectations after the media didn't do much for me, and then the demo, but I'm pretty sure it's in my top ten of all time now. Just a pure gaming experience with enough charm and soul to make you feel like a kid again, great characters, one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time, and Platinum's token solid gameplay. It's so varied and packed that it pretty much scratches every itch a gamer could possibly have.

Just amazing. Having a Wii U without this game is like having a bar without the booze.

Nier thread? Nier thread.

Batman Arkham Asylum comes to mind too. This was me (I didn't know shit about the game before playing it): "Oh, a random Batman game out of nowhere? It must be a generic beat'em-up with licensed soundtrack or voices or some shit".

Boy was I happily wrong.

Speaking of Nier. Got that on the pipeline to play after I finish Dark Souls.

Max Payne 3 I found to be crazy good as well...I had 0 expectations consider 1 and 2 were basically the same game with a graphical update

Tales of Xillia. I'd never played a Tales game before it, and so I was expecting a rather generic JRPG. But the combat system had me hooked and the story wasn't too shabby either.

NBA Street. I don't normally play sports games and randomly chose to play the demo while bored one day.

Ended up buying it and every sequel that came afterwards.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

I'm not an MMO person, and I remembered all the shit that 1.0 got for being just plain terrible. But Square-Enix and YoshiP actually managed to turn it around and turn it into a pretty great and not-so-time consuming MMO and I got hooked as soon as I played the phase 3 of the beta.
