Marty O'Donnell Fired By Bungie

Halo Wars was my favorite soundtrack in the Halo series. Just throwing that out there. Halo 4's soundtrack sucked because it sucked, not because he wasn't involved in it.

Nothing against the guy - he is clearly a great composer. But losing him is not a guarantee that the soundtrack will suck. There are plenty of composers that they could bring in to do a great job. The question is - who do they have making the soundtrack, now that he's gone?

Or better yet Microsoft Studios. Get the man back in the Halo seat...Maybe he can do Gears as well.

Him an Joe Staten are good friends, it would be cool to see them back together again.

Get Jamie Greisemer as well, the whole band back together in their own studio making the "next" Halo. Phil plz...

Microsoft ? ;p

Eh... I don't care about Halo anymore, so that's why I didn't mention MS or 343i. Also, I'd find it far less interesting if he were to go back to Halo.

Of course, it's not my decision where he ends up so I guess we'll see what happens.

"Jason Jones doesn't want to be famous"

Yet he doesn't like that someone else is and deservedly so.

It actually reads more like Jason Jones is uncomfortable with one person receiving praise for their contribution moreso than everyone else at the studio. Which, from a managerial position would seem to make sense. When on person on a team starts to receive acclaim that overshadows the rest, it can lead to ego's and/or resentment, which is obviously not good for a cohesive atmosphere. In such a case, Marty deserving the praise wouldn't really matter as Jason's goal is for everyone to excel.

"Operation get Bungie back without buying Bungie."

Microsoft playing the long game: Let Bungie go independent, wait for them to implode* and get back all the people that left that actually didn't mind Microsoft, Shane Kim - who knew he had a master plan at work?

*May not be imploding

Haha, it's crazy how many long time employees are not with the company. Joe Tung, Marcus Lehto, Marty O'Donnell, Jaime Griesemer, Brian Jarrard, Joe Staten just off the top of my head.

Stinkles ain't too shabby a writer himself, but I think you have him confused for someone else.

Microsoft did just get Joe Staten back.

Yeah my bad...confused...he is at 343 now but i was thinking of joe

Frankie was a fixture on the podcast and i sort of thought of bungie and him in the same breadth

Unfortunately for Jason it doesn't work that way. People will always recognize the one in the crowd that excels. But I do see your point too. We are not in there work spaces and maybe good ole Marty had a bit of an ego because of all his praise. Who knows though

If Sony is truly serious about rebooting Santa Monicas FPS title, they should bring some of those guys in.

I am sorry, but some franchises needs to have the same composers that worked from there in the beginning. Everyone always think about that composer when talking about a certain franchise.

Final Fantasy: Uematsu
Star Wars: John Williams
Elder Scrolls: Jeremy Soule
Zelda: Koji Kondo
Metroid: Yamamoto
Castlevania: Yamane
Metal Gear: Hibino
Dragon Quest: Sugiyama
Kingdom Hearts: Shimomura

It feels wrong to put new composers and discard the old composer, because they made that franchise also big with their compositions.

343 needs to hire this man

I don't want to see Marty do Halo at 343, personally. He left his mark on the franchise with some of the best music in gaming, and I imagine created a vast amount of exciting material for Destiny. The game is coming out soon, he certainly guided the audio direction of the game throughout the course of it's development.

If Marty continues doing video game music I'd love to see him try something new, different, maybe not sci-fi, let him flex his creative muscles.

Griesemer seems like a great guy, but I have a love/hate relationship with the sandbox design of Halo 3 which was under his purview. Not sure if want him on future Halo game.

Well I don't want to give the impression that I'm speculating that he just had an ego. It's just as possible he could've been the most mild mannered, good natured guy there and others may have built resentment simply because he had won awards. Either situation is possible or even a combination of both or none of it at all.

But specifically when I read that passage, within context, about Jason Jones... it doesn't make me think he's being jealous but that he may have been concerned/worried about the possibility of those things happening. I mean Jason himself seems to avoid the spotlight as much as he can being a Co-founder/Studio Head, so I can't really imagine jealously being something he feels over his employees getting recognized for their quality work.

WOW I had no idea all of those guys left Bungie.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
Even if 343 managed to snag him up, would he have much of an impact on Halo 5 at this point? I'm not sure how/when composing is usually done but that seems like a bit of a late addition.

Personally I think it would be amazing if he ended up with Bioware on Mass Effect.

True but I have high hopes for Marty and wish him well where ever he might go. Still upset he was fired though.

By "next" Halo I actually meant a new IP! I should have made that clearer...

Considering Halo 5 is next year, he could make an impact. He might not want to go back to Halo though.

Lol...but honestly they kept Frank o'connor who as the writer i always thought of as the soul of halo

Bad move. I haven't really cared for Bungie to be honest since they left Microsoft. Was hoping Destiny would surprise me, but this doesn't say much for their decision making.

As much as i'd love for him to return to the series. He's been working exclusively on FPS Sci-fi games for nearly 15 years now. I'd love to hear what he can come up with in a completely different element.

Good thing being is that he's no longer in house at Bungie, he can work on just about anything that gets thrown at him if he wants to, so perhaps he can do Halo 5 + other projects.

Ideally I would want Bioware as he could work on the different franchises there like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and the new IP. He wouldn't necessarily be limited to one genre.

I wonder if we'll ever get answers. I can't imagine we'll be left in the dark about this considering how big and integral Marty's role was at Bungie (at least that's what I thought but apparently not).

I reckon he'll go back to doing the soundtracks for Halo, which is a big win.

I feel for the new guy if that happens though. Can you imagine the conversation?

"Yo, hey bro...er....remember Marty? Yeah he's back so err.....you're cool and all....you're sick bro...but err.....er...its just....I.....WE....we think its best....that..."

*I'll get my stuff" :(

I bet the current composer on Halo is bricking himself.

So have we found out what happened yet or are we all still in shock?

The dude didn't die and other key members have left Bungie before. 38 pages goddamn.

Who knows if he even wants to stay in the games industry. I can imagine him going back to commercials, maybe look into television and film. Though I will admit, if goes to 343, even in just an advisory or temporary role it would make me super excited for future Halo games.

Shock, and it's going to stay that way unless somebody spills the details. I doubt we see anything more official from the Bungie side of things.
