It's been too long since we've had that gif.

Polygon should be smart enough to realise the term 'sold in' is utter nonsense. The phrase they were looking for was 'shipped to retailers'

Polygon reported the right story. Sold in means shipped, Microsoft shipped 5M units so far.

What's wrong is the verge story (and some posters here) trying to claim that 5M units shipped (less than 5M sold to consumers) can be compared against 7M units sold to consumers (probably 7.5/8M units shipped).

Sold-in is a commonly used term which means the same thing as shipped, is often reported by publishers, and has nothing to do with Microsoft's position right now. You don't get to declare terms "utter nonsense".

I think the reaction is more for the juxtaposition of the Verge reporting PS4s lead vs Polygon reporting a somewhat hollow milestone for XBO. There isn't any mention of PS4 sales on the front of Polgyon right now, while there's an XBO article.

So what software could possibly be on the X1s hype train till halo 2015 now ?

They seriously can't think hyping a remake will sit well with current or future owners of the system. Not when Sony will have AAA blockbusters type games like Uncharted. 4, The Order and Driveclub ready for the 2nd half of next year.

Destiny is going to be marketed and hyped to hell for the PS4 as well despite also hitting the X1. I think it is safe to assume you will have the inevitable 1080 p vs 900/720p stuff for Destiny around. Then the years of exclusive DLC that Tretton mentioned last E3 for Destiny.

I mean ... The software train is only going to get larger and larger for the PS4 this year. And much of it will not see the light of day on X1 this year.

I think by end of 2014 Sony could be looking at a 15m to 6m type lead easily.

Here are the tweets:

And they're nonsense. Microsoft + Sony + Nintendo take NPD numbers very seriously and use them as a very real metric of hardware and software performance in the retail sphere.

Are you guys complaining because you don't realize "sold-in" means shipped, or are you complaining because anyone reporting Xbox One shipments that doesn't start their headline with "PS4 is trouncing Xbox One ownt" is wrong?

excuse my silliness, but does that mean the xb1 is 5 million shipped, so we don't know the sold through numbers ?

Sorry I am being simple, its middle of night in UK

It's not that common and given the audience they serve, it is poor wording.

The software numbers don't include digital do they? I wonder how much of an effect that has had if that's the case. I know going into this gen me and my friends are pretty much going all digital with PS4 whereas this time last year we wouldn't have dreamed of it, I'm sure we can't be the only people like that which makes me wonder if software sales are actually down or has a big chunk just shifted to digital?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Sony doesn't sort out their numbers in their quarterly reports. Also the link you provided clearly shows MS saying they sold 3.9 Million Xbox One and 3.5 Million 360 consoles. Sony's quarterlies show only a combined figure.

What the fuck are you even arguing? So MS says that the Xbox One sold 3.9 M in 5 months. Sony then says they sold over 7 M as of April whatever.

Yet you don't believe Sony?

I love Pokken!
Titanfall in #1 as expected. I laugh at whoever said South Park would claim the top spot.

Dark Souls II at #5 is as expected as well, will be interesting to see how well the PC version will perform.

NPD is like a fart in the wind?

Ok, now THAT tweet is worth laughing at. That shit is hilarious

He LITERALLY does not know what he's talking about.

It really is hilarious isn't it? He made around 3-4 tweets about it already! NPD numbers are only for forum arguments apparently. I mean it's not like hardware manufacturers or analysts have been using those data for years or anything

Yeah, another shill was doing the same prior to the release.

Kinda spoiled it for me honestly.

yeah Kevin Dent...as a grown man he should be embarrassed how obvious his fanboyism is and the way he communicates it

It's over, period. Microsoft lost their last ace, and that's the end of their Xbox One hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for Xbox One. Microsoft has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a Xbox One. Except if they want to play Titanfall. Which will also come to PS4 at some point.

Sony took the last reason away that anyone would NEED to own a Xbox One over a PS4 (except TV SPORTS KINECT LOL GAMING), and the cavalcade of tiny titles that will be nice but won't stir up any sales is not going to salvage the bloated, overdesigned behemoth that was Xbox One.

There may be some hardcore gamer's that stick around. Some did it for Gamecube. But the last bell tolled. Maybe next decade.

The age of Microsoft is done.

LMAO. Fanboys be smoking crack. Most of my 360 friends list now shows up as XBOX One. In my circle of friends I know 5 people with XBONE and 1 with PS4. XBOX One is outselling 360. PS3 was in 2nd and did fine. I would applaud your use of hyperbole but I feel that you actually believe the hype.

A gaming journalist site, I guess their supposed to be fair and balanced, makes that tweet based on the information that has been received today? Sound typical based on what I've seen of them to lead with that.

I blocked them in my hosts file and router. I know for a fact that I blocked that one writer on Twitter, but I'm not logged in to Twitter atm to see if I blocked their handle too.

They actually used the same retailer-focused terminology when reporting the PS4 results.

7 million sold through [to consumers].

~so many hopes pinned delicately upon MS at least gaining a small victory in the US with leading hardware sales..

So many dreams dashed like a bots empty head against a curb by a falling titan..

to those who had hoped, to those who dreamed, today a titan falls, not with a fantastic atmosphere penetrating vertical drop, but with an unceremonious thud.~

Stop, Ben.

Ben, stop.

Ben.

Please, Ben.

Please.

Between these tweets, how can anyone take him seriously in his position? Some users like to complain when people point out how little credibility him and Gies have in regards to the system wars debate, but the evidence is factual.

Conspiracy accusations are nothing but a strawman argument. When MS and Nintendo deliver their own financial reports they do not combine DS + 3DS, Wii + Wii U, or 360 + Xbox One. They sort all this stuff out. Being suspicious of combined numbers isn't paranoia, it's common sense.

We have to remember that Sony has expertly used sales data as PR tool since the PS2 era. This is a well known fact. And why shouldn't they? Sales number do effect consumer confidence.

Read your own source

Notably, Sony will be combining sales of the PS4 hardware with the PS3 and PS2 figure starting from this quarter, potentially meaning that we won't be able to see exact hardware sales figures for the PS4, unless Sony separates them out elsewhere

Sony separated them out by stating specifically that the PS4 sold 7 million worldwide. If they were combining the figures then they would state something along the lines of PS3+PS4 or PlayStation family. Your suggestion is unreasonable.

There aren't mentions of PS4 sales because Sony announced their last PS4 sales milestone yesterday, and Polygon covered it then.

And oh look, they used the term "sold-through" instead of the term "sold", as part of their conspiracy!
