Angry Joe Elder Scrolls Online Review

Game was super disappointing to me.

I feel like the only way an Elder Scrolls multiplayer game can work is on a much smaller scale. Having 10000 chosen ones running around is always stupid in an MMO and it's made even worse in an Elder Scrolls game. When I envision an Elder Scrolls multiplayer game, it's up to 8 players or so(maybe less or more) coop. You could have your typical chosen one storyline, but only the host is the chosen one. The other players join and are like mercenaries or battle bros. Everyone can join guilds together and everything, but only one player is the "dragonborn". The extra players can all interact and go off on their own or stay with the host or whatever. Questing is just like the old games, and the only quests the mercs can't do without the chosen one is the main story quest. Maybe one guy could just go off and be a blacksmith and sell to the other guys or maybe two guy could go off and be assassins.

Ultimately this brings coop to the elder scrolls series in a way that leaves the single player completely intact and without building the game around coop. I don't see this being like a random matchmaking coop thing, but more of almost a Minecraft server type thing where you and your friends exist in the same persistent world and maybe Joe is the head of the Theives Guild and Jack has built up a big crafting empire.

That's seriously my dream game, and TESO just made that idea even farther away from becoming a reality.

I feel like I'm one of 5 people who thinks this is the best MMORPG since vanilla WoW/EverQuest. Seriously. Ditched FFXIV for it, and I really liked XIV.
What do you like most about it?

I still can't believe they did this. They want a monthly sub and then charge you more for a collectors edition that has a race you won't get otherwise. Stupid move.

AJ's bit on them taking as much money up front as they can looks spot on from what I have seen.

I like his in depth reviews and let's be honest, it's far better than the 5 minute crap fest that was IGN's review of it.

Yeah this was more informative than the IGN review imo.

I noticed none of that. Not one moment any time during the review.

I didn't notice it the first time I watched it, either. Probably because I was sitting in bed holding my iPhone over my head.

However, his hands are definitely all sorts of green whenever he waves them around, that's pretty obvious if you go back and watch.

How the hell can you not see it.

ESO has a lot of things that old school players like. Maybe it isn't a game for the WoW fans, but it certainly is a game for the AC fans like me. F2P usually f*cks up an MMO anyway... very few do it right (none IMHO) so I prefer my MMOs to be sub based.

Expand on this, please?

I didn't realize if you left an area under your allegiance (is that the right term?) you couldn't see people in other areas unless they are from your allegiance... that sounds ridiculous...

As I said in the other thread any game that wants $80 for the real version + $15/month + micro-transactions better be up there with the best games ever made.

I love TES games but this game just looks silly.

I have a difficult time translating into words just how much I disliked playing this game. I have never been so bored in my life. The worst part? I spent over 40 hours reviewing it. I wish I could have that time back.

Angry Joe nailed it.

Wow, this game looks like trash. I can't believe they fucked it up so bad.

The game has some decent questing, since it's not hub based and not all a bunch of generic Kill X missions, but hes right about so much. The game feels so backwards at times. It feels like they created a stripped down ES game and slapped on the MMO part of it, and did it very poorly. The weakest part of the game is the whole MP part of it all. It feels like everything in the game is poorly thought out or step back from what we have learned over the years playing MMOs. Are they dumb or did they think this was unique to do stuff the way they did? Just playing with others is a pain in the ass, my GF and I are playing and we keep having issues with so many little things that MMOs been doing right for years now.

And yes you have to work super hard to get a mount, and they mostly suck balls

this

The single player aspects are fantastic in comparison to other MMO's.

The problem is definitely MP which is odd considering it is an MMO.

Also the game is very very linear, you need to do like 99% of the quests in a zone (or so it seems) to be the proper level cap for the next one.

The character creation and leveling is absolutely fantastic, any class can play any role and use any weapon

I just touched on PVP and it has a lot of promise, my PC is OLLLLD and there had to be like 100 people around me as we were transporting a scroll and there was no lag at all.

Not sure if I will up my sub after 30 days, but I do not feel ripped off. The game is still enjoyable so I will see what they have planned

Corporate Commander has got to be the funniest thing Joe does. I laugh my ass off whenever he uses that character.

As far as the review goes I thought it was fair. You can tell he really wanted to like the game, but it just wasn't working for him. A 5/10 from Joe isn't like a 5/10 from Gamespot or IGN. It's still a solid game, but it ultimately didn't deliver what he hoped for.

Watched this earlier, he's right on the money (as always) and the game does look average at best. Like I said in the OT, I think it's unforgivable that an entire race is locked behind a paywall. really hoping more people don't support this, even though I've seen it selling rather well on the West Coast. I wonder what sub retention rates will look like, hopefully dismal.

edit: $60 +$15 a month + micro transactions. :( not cool

So there are microtransactions on top of the $60 entry & $15 a month subscription? Christ almighty.

Jesus, this looks awful! I could only stomach a couple of minutes in the beta but I'd imagine it got better judging from the OT here getting updates and all.

That segment where he can't even see the mob that's attacking his group member because he already cleared the quest just killed me. On top of that it seems a mess of bugs too.

No there isn't micro transactions. Its just that the CE has some important stuff(imperial race and mount) included which is about £20ish more in price.

It's $59.99 with a $15/month subscription fee. To play any race on any faction and have access to the Imperial Race, you need to cough up an addition $20 for the Collector's Edition.

It's disgusting IMO.

So just locking important stuff out of the game behind a paywall or giving you the option to grind your ass off for something like a horse? Sounds wonderful. I will not be going near this game on the consoles.

The game absolutely has no shortage of issues when it comes to the imperial edition, poor implementation of the grouping mechanics, dungeon bots, and general buggy gameplay, which makes it even more puzzling to me that he decided to exaggerate other aspects of the game.

Yes, the mobs drop a low amount of gold. They also frequently drop loot in the form of armor, weapons, and trash loot, with some of these items carrying an "intricate" property that allow you to sell them for even more gold. This isn't even including the gold you get from turning in quests.

Because of this, you don't have to kill anywhere near "40,000 skeletons" to afford that tier 2 horse. Not that it's even super important to have a horse for PvE, since the game has a fast travel system similar to Guild Wars 2 in the form of wayshrines. Except ESO lifts the travel fee if you travel directly from the wayshrines themselves. Not to mention there are active and passive abilities you can use to boost your movement speed enough that you'll literally run faster than the tier 2 horses. The only area where I can see the game being a "running simulator" is if you're in Cyrodiil and have no control of the map.

I also didn't like how he timed his venture into the Deadlands as under a minute (here), while literally using footage of a later section from that same quest where he's fighting a boss. In the Deadlands (here).

And blaming the map system because you're running around on the second floor balcony of a building and unable to find the banker? Here is a screenshot of the building's entrance.

I'm glad he spent the time to point out the flaws of the game in detail, as it's ultimately better for the game in the long run. But I'm not happy he omitted important information when presenting some of his arguments.

Lol no... Realm reborn is a boring by-the-numbers-MMO that is only popular because the FF fanbase wants something to play since they have had no good FF game for ages TBH.

You can't be serious or you haven't play TRR at all. It's not WoW but its enjoyment is way up there. The combat is very fun and crafting system is probably the best among any MMO now.

Another genre Joe is an expert on. /sarcasm.

MMOs are tricky beasts to rate. I'm wondering what is his experience in the genre especially with endgame PVE and PVP.

Having logged hours in the game, I can safely say that's it's one of the best MMOs I played. I actually feel invested in the story for once.

Still, to each their own.

What is next? Complaining you can't play an Undead priest in the Alliance? Faction based MMOs tend to restrict race choices.

And the ability to play any race/faction was also a free pre-order bonus. Better check your facts next time.

You don't need to be an expert in the genre to know what it does right and what it does wrong.

And actually, I believe Joe has an interest in MMOs.

This is even more shitty. You had to preorder to get a huge, permanent bonus that you can't obtain no matter what now.

Why does this guy always get threads. People post like he's some influential figure in gaming....I know don't post if you hate, but his videos annoy me.

How about not having the option to begin with? That'd be better IMO.

Wait, so you buy the game for $60+ which comes with a free month of it's subscription, but it's being held hostage and the only way to use it is by buying at least one more month?

Did I hear that right in the review?

Why does every Jimquisition get a thread? Don't thread shit, just don't post if you want it to fall off the front page.

I laughed a few times during the review, and I thought it was fairly informative. But given how horrible the game is to him, I thought it even more funny at the end when it showed: "Join The Angry Guild in ESO every Thursday for special events..." .
If it sucks so bad, why are you or anyone in your guild still playing the game, much less every Thursday?

He has a guild/community to manage maybe?
I don't know.

God knows. He is a poor man's Jim Sterling.

Yet another You Tuber who believes he is an expert on everything.

I only watched a few minutes but yeah the game looks terrible and nowhere near worth the large asking price. Don't even think I'd be interested if it was f2p.

should watch the rest, the last half is about the big castle fight pvp I think. looks super epic.
