Rare might not be forced to make Kinect games but anything else gets canned

i do hope MS are genuine when they say theyll be letting Rare off the leash to pursue other things. its about time

Presumably its up to the studio head to decide their direction, so I dont know where they will actually go but he seemed pro-Kinect

These guys used to be my idols growing up. I fondly remember their games and the time when they were one of the top devs in the industry, but these days I really couldn't care less about them. They're bland as fuck.

im sure he is. and i do hope Rare continue to use kinect, where appropriate, in all of their projects going forward. im just saying, i would like to see them branch out a little more outside the Kinect Sports franchise (which theyve been on for several years now) and maybe revisit old classics. or hell, surprise everyone with something new.

Where did they say this?
Maybe it was a leap of logic from the "we dont force them to do anything" thing?

Though depending on how involved Phil Spencer was before I can imagine him being appointed as head of Xbox would open the doors again, or at least give them SOME leeway. Though at this point it'd be less "let Rare make other games again" and more "let this group of Brits do something else" since I doubt most if any of the old guard is there anymore.

I mean, any new IP would be interesting. People probably bitched and moaned that they didn't make a Banjo or Conkers game last-gen but we still got Viva Pinata out of it.

They won't stay current forever.

I agree. Sooner or later, people are gonna get tired of the FPS genre & will start dying down, & will want more genres. And it'll hit Microsoft much more, since that's where the Xbox's popularity stems from & is always being called the "shooterbox" by many gamers.

While Sony or Nintendo aren't very big on the FPS genre like Microsoft is, they still have plenty of genres other than FPS's.

If they aren't going to use the Banjo-Kazooie IP, they might as well sell it to Nintendo so they can put Retro to work. That way Banjo-Kazooie can be the adventure/explore series Mario 64/Sunshine fans want, and Mario can stay a platforming/obstacle course series like it's supposed to be.

They might have had time to practice if it wasn't for Rare's penchant for toddler levels of handholding, slow unskippable dialogue, cut-scenes, and the Xbox's crazy long load times. The coach being an ass was just the icing on the cake.

Everything about that video was painful to watch. Except maybe Vinny's dancing.

And whats with not being able to use your own Kinect avatar for the quick play? That's Fable 3 levels of WTF-ery.

Avatars were killed with the move to Xbox One, I believe.

I remember reading somewhere that, MS management, thought they were getting the Donkey Kong ip with the purchase of Rare, not sure if this is true

I wonder if they will be able to work on something new after this kinect game bombs.

Shouldn't be too long before we officially get the numbers. That should be a good day.

Now that Kinect Sports Rivals has a Giant Bomb Quick Look (some of their funniest content is for Kinect games), I was reminded of this thread.

Is there a single person at Rare that has been there since the old times and has witnessed this depressing set of events since Kinect?

there was a point during bowling when Jeff was getting really annoyed and said "listen". I thought the guy was going to go off on a rant but then i realized he was just trying to exit the game.

Quick play in Kinect Sports Rivals won't even let you use the special avatars you created within Kinect Sports Rivals. At least according to that Giant Bomb quicklook.

Makes zero sense for players who already have one.

Similar to how co-op in Fable 3 required the joining player to play as some random mercenary NPC instead of their own character. Just a bizarre choice regardless of technical issues.

Nintendo needs to get the Rare IPs back, just so they can re-release all of their past output and get new teams to make Banjo, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, etc. Plus all of those characters in Smash Bros.

Rare on the Xbox is like Shaq on the Celtics or some shit

Playing through Banjo Tooie right now. Not the company's best game, but charming as hell

Fable 2 was the random mercenary. In 3 you could play with the hero from your friend's game.

If not that then Microsoft could stand to get more of Rare's old IP brought back on Xbox, maybe with remakes that make them a bit more accessible. I've always wanted to play Jet Force Gemini but I hear the control scheme's crap, but maybe you can alter that into something more in line with modern standards? You've got issues with stuff Nintendo specifically owns though, ideally they'd have stayed free as corporate clashes always mess this stuff up.

Sorry, but Rare as you want it to be is gone. It is never coming back. Time to move on.

Last I checked they still have the rights to the IP that everyone wants to see. Everyone knows all the old Rare guys left, you aren't telling us anything new.

I'm sure people told Killer Instinct fans to "move on" but look how that turned out.

Doesn't mean someone else can't use their IPs. Also, that doesn't mean new talent can't come in and change things either.

Rare as right now is pretty much a different studio though.

Do you guys think it's Microsoft who canned all these projects for Rares lack of quality games the past few years or is there simply not that magic group of talent there anymore?

I still yearn for a great next Gen perfect dark sequel. Microsoft just sits on all these rare ip's and does nothing with them.

Also, while I'm in this thread. I'm betting Rare's probably working on Viva Pinata for Xbox One. Why else would they tease Horstachio in their last Christmas card?

Also, despite how much Rare has changed over the years, they still make these cards.

In that pic the Jet ski sort of reminds me of the hover jet you ride on the wind tunnel level in Battle Toads.
