Pff, you guys are WAY off. Clearly it's a fan theory showing how Starf-X is a prequel to Starf-Y.

In the Japanese version of Zelda II, there is a grave in the town of Saria that reads "Here Lies Loto". Loto is the Japanese name for Erdrick, the hero of Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior. Square responded to this gag by having a tombstone in Final Fantasy read "Here Lies Link", which was then changed to "Here Lies Erdrick" in the English release, and subsequently reverted to "Here Lies Link" in all re-releases.

Sorry to pull this from so long ago (I just fire this thread up every few months and work backwards) but what did Square gain from "responding" to Nintendo? Wasn't DQ from Enix who wasn't with Square at that point? Still cool to see, I knew about Link in FF but never knew about Roto/Loto in Adventure of Link.

It wasn't an attempt to "gain" anything, it was just some friendly snark at each other by some Japanese developers.

I'd agree with khaaan in that the way it was worded made it sound like a back-and-forth between Nintendo and SquareEnix, or that Square made Dragon Quest.

Nintendo took a shot at Enix.
Square (uninvolved but seemingly inspired by Nintendo's snark) took a shot at Nintendo.
Nintendo of America (having translated Zelda, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior) redirected Square's shot at Nintendo into a second shot at Enix.
Later Final Fantasy translations corrected it back into a shot at Nintendo.

I'm not sure why NOA had it in for Enix, but it probably had to do with NOA's early policy saying that you weren't allowed to take shots at Nintendo (like how they had a problem with Maniac Mansion running on the "NES Scumm System"). NOA can't themselves take a shot at Nintendo, they have rules against that, so... Enix.

I mistakenly went to page 70 instead of post 70 - which is the one about the bushes being recolored clouds - but this post blew my mind more. I never saw the end of level/World 8 darkness connection before, and it makes me a little upset that they changed it for All-Stars.

Isn't Mario 3 supposed to be a play? I thought the black end part of each stage was supposed to be Mario running off the stage. World 8 would be the props room, I guess

I really doubt the references to characters of each others great classic games were malicious "shots" dude. Lollll

I was trying to recall something from this thread. It was about this one obscure way to kill one of the seemingly immortal enemies from Mario 3, does anyone remember that one? (Sorry, I haven't taken the time to go through all of this thread, it's huge!)

In metroid fusion when you're looking for the varia suit the X parasites freeze themselves and try to rush you so you absorb them to kill you.

After you get the Varia suit, in the very next room the frozen X parasites still rush you like before, but because of the varia suit they heal you instead.

In every encounter with them after that the frozen X parasites run the fuck away.

They're learning

It looks like a complete copy of the Space Shuttle, and while the USSR did steal a lot of info, the reason it looks exactly the same is because that is the ideal shape for a spacecraft of that size payload. They wanted to make it look different, but also wanted the same size payload, so it ended up looking exactly the same.

And in true USSR fashion it flew one unmanned mission then spent the rest of its life grounded until its hangar collapsed and destroyed it.

It landed with fucking autopilot way back then and was unmanned the entire time? What magic is this?

Not only that, after getting the varia suit, the frozen X wont change their behavior until you absorb them in one room, any room, so you can avoid them for a few rooms and still watch them diving at you every time they see you. I used to do this a lot, trying to go as far as posible without absorbing one. I dont think I ever got out of NOC without absorbing one, so I dont know if they automatically chase you in ARC if you dont absorb any in NOC. It seems that any "evolved" X is smart enough to see you as a threat, unlike the yellow, green and red ones.

I'm probably way LTTP on this, but i had no idea the king said different things if you had certain powerups.

As a kid I had no idea what "No dice?! What a drag" meant. I thought the king was disappointed that Mario didn't have any dice with him so they could gamble over who gets his clothes.

This thread is six years old and still isn't close to reaching the post limit.

Videogame facts that blow your mind facts that blow your mind.

AVGN thread is nearly 8 years old, I remember that's where I discovered him back when I was still a lurker. I'd wager there might be an even older thread though, but that one is definitely one of the oldest active ones since NeoGAF is almost 10 years old itself.

NeoGAF itself in its current incarnation is about 8 years old. But the forum as a whole has been around since before 2000 when it was known as Gaming-Age Forums.

The story of NeoGAF part one: humble beginnings
The story of NeoGAF part two: scandal and control
The story of NeoGAF part three: money, money, money

We should Kickstart a documentary based on those articles. Like Indie Game: The Movie. "NeoGAF: The Inside Story". $9.99 on HumbleBundle.

Never thought about where "no dice" came from...mind blown:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/256750.html
Meaning

A refusal to accept a proposition - equivalent to 'nothing doing'.

Origin

no diceThis is a US phrase and originated there in the early 20th century. Gambling with dice was illegal in many states and so gamblers went to some pains to hide the dice when challenged by the police. Courts would sometimes throw out cases if the dice weren't offered in evidence. There are several court records where gamblers were alleged to have swallowed dice to avoid arrest.

The Texas newspaper The Port Arthur Daily News, April 1921, contains the first reference I can find to 'no dice' with the 'nothing doing' meaning:

"It's 'no dice' when the bones can't be found, according to a local court decision. Six white men arrested Tuesday by Officer W D Moore and charged with gaming with dice.

'Did you see them shooting dice?' queried the city attorney.
'No, I did not see the dice.' said the officer."

The men were acquitted. It is very likely that the 'no dice - no conviction' ruling is the source of the current meaning of 'no dice'.

not sure if this is true or not, but might as well post it here since I've always wondered about it.

In the first Street Fighter game, Adon was the subboss and this was his stage:

In the background of his Alpha 2 stage, I think you can see the statue from his SF1 stage:

it looks like the hand position is different, but I think it might be meant as a throwback. The Alpha series did pay a lot of homage to SF1, so I wouldn't be surprised...

^I see it more as just using a Thai landmark or the like for the design/theme of the stage.

This however blew my mind as I never noticed or even BOTHERED to make a note of:
Some of these are stretches, and it sort of hinges on Flying Battery still being a part of Sonic 3 instead of moved to Sonic & Knuckles like it ultimately was, buuuuut:

That's why I said NeoGAF. GAF had been around for longer, but NeoGAF was set-up in mid '04. Hence, almost 10 years ago. It was a fresh forum so duh, there is no possibility of threads on current incarnation of GAF being older than 10 years. So yeah, an 8 year old thread is one of the longest running active ones.

Edit: OK, I admit I screwed up dates since oldest threads on this forum are from June '04, but GAF officially spunf off and became NeoGAF in 2006. I guess. Semantics and all, that would actually make AVGN thread almost as old as NeoGAF. Or something.

This is likely correct. The SF team has always been good at putting in references in details.

Look at Ken's Stage:

I think that more of a theory that just fits very well, with curtains and props and stuff. Would be awesome if Miyamoto was confirming it though.

Does anybody know if something happens if you finish Mario 3 with either a frog or hammer bros. suit? I did it once with a Tanooki suit but cant remember if anything happened, I think you just turn into Super Mario once you enter the room the princess is held captive.

Edit: should have googled it beforehand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qrvL6UZwzg

Capcom and SNK used to put character cameos in their 2D backgrounds all the time. Those statues look totally different though and the columns are absent. It's probably just generic Buddha statues.

Ken from Street Fighter 2010?! Now that's obscure.

Eh? I figured:

Left to right: Lord Raptor, Hsien-Ko and Lei Lei, Rad Spencer, [SF1 Birdie?], Morrigan, Jumbo Flapjack and Biff Slamkovitch, [Eliza?], Ginzu the Ninja, Captain Commando, Michelle Heart, Strider Hiryu, Linn Kurosawa, Felicia, [???], [???]

I'm fairly sure that Ken's stage here is supposed to be a costume party. They're not the actual characters, but rather normal guests cosplaying them.

I'm not really sure if this belongs in this thread, but I was watching The Amazing World of Gumball (it's a Cartoon Network show, for those who haven't heard of it) and spotted a pretty cool nod to the Shadow of the Colossus. The episode is actually called "The Colossus," so maybe it wasn't just a subtle reference.

Here are some screencaps of the scene in both the game and the show:

The shuttle that launches into space when you beat a certain score at Tetris

is not the Space Shuttle, but the Buran, the Russian equivalent

I thought everyone knew this when I was a kid. I was really into the space program even as a little guy, and I knew about the Buran from watching the media coverage of its test flight (which was unmanned and was also its only orbital flight). When I beat Tetris for the first time, seeing the Buran made me feel awesome, and only added to the "Russian-ness" of Tetris.

The Energia module (the booster) looks very different from our external fuel tank and SRBs - made it a dead giveaway.

The Buran was really cool... in a lot of ways it could have been better than our own Shuttle. It was bigger and could carry heavier payloads, and was completely able to be piloted and operated from the ground as evidenced by its test flight. Unfortunately it came just as the cold war was ending and the USSR was bankrupting itself, and it just never got completed.
