IGN Rumor: Nintendo Revealing New Hardware at E3 [Up: MCV + Videogamer]

Next gen handheld probably near-finalized but being kept secret til next year. Nintendo doesn't want to miss out on full-on 3DS holiday sales this year, with Smash Bros. being on a handheld and all. Announcing a 3DS successor this year could only hurt 3DS. One year too soon for that.

Everyone is assuming it could be QOL, but that seems most unlikely, given that E3 is all about AAA hardcore console and handheld games and making the biggest splash. QOL seems like a better fit for a smaller-scale "Nintendo World" event or something like that, like they used to do with Space World before opting to do multi-vendor trade shows. Nintendo at E3 is gonna be all about Smash, 3DS, some first-party surprises, and most of all, Zelda Wii U. I think for software surprises, of which there are always a handful, I think an HD port of Dark Moon seems pretty likely. Mario Party for Wii U has got to be coming at some point. I think on the digital front, N64 games seem like a no-brainer here at some point. Maybe even with a little work done on them, like an HD Paper Mario or something like that. It's been long enough since the last home console Paper Mario that something ought to be coming down the pipe.

A revised Wii U model seems most likely. Smaller, higher storage capacity, cheaper? $249, reduced GamePad size, better battery in GamePad. Something like that.

If we're just throwing anything out there, then maybe a 3DS Player accessory for Wii U? That would sell some Wii Us.

I want a small $100 console with a wireless SNES style controller that plays Virtual console games and new downloadable content.

Give me that and a proper account system and I'm back in Nintendo.

I'll buy three of them and give the rest to family.

I think that Nintendo could really pull this off - A budget console ala the Ouya or FireTV, but with actually good games.

New Nintendo console with Zelda as its launch game! 2015 release date!

As powerful as a PS4! $349.99!

Zelda U cancelled!

Wouldn't be too mad as long I play that next Zelda!

What would Nintendo Devs do with that much power? They are still learning last gen tech and haven't topped PS3's best games. Console power isnt their problem. It's now developer talent that they lack, at least on the graphics front.

Not really. They could also do a lot of price deals and the next handheld likely won't be backwards compatible so people would still need to buy a 3DS to play those games.

I've been thinking about this ever since Nintendo said that a second GamePad would be coming, and considering how a potential $150 controller could sell - even if bundled with a game. And I always come back to the same conclusion: GamePad Plus. A GamePad that has double functionality, both as a second GamePad for multiplayer and a separate portable unit for Miiverse, Virtual Console and compatible eShop titles on the go.

Worst case: what's the one thing none of us want but Nintendo insists on?

Best case: Wii-Uculous Rift googles or something

Please don't turn this into a console war. Please.

From the earnings call earlier this year...

- QOL platform will roll out in April 2015, integrated with games, business plan details in 2014,

Obviously this could mean an E3 reveal of the QOL 'non-wearable' hardware (whatever it is).

Yeah, that's what I think it is.

My 'safe' bets have been QoL launch in 2015, new handheld in holiday 2016, new console in holiday 2017. Now since Iwata has talked about wanting to be able to port between handheld and console with shared architecture to improve their lineups they could always release the handheld and console around the same time (meaning both in 2016, a Q1 and Q4 situation, same with Q4 2016 and Q1 2017) and just have a 'Portable" edition and a 'Home' edition or something like that -- but either way I don't see a proper Nintendo game machine coming until 2016.

That means if my release guesses are right, that we should get a QoL reveal this year (whether they want to do it at E3 or not is up to them), the handheld reveal next year and the console probably talked about with the handheld (if they're going with similar architecture they'll want to discuss it when they show the handheld) but properly revealed in 2016.

The one thing it won't be will be a system more powerful than the Wii U.

QOL, 3DS revision, cheap set-top box are the most likely things IMO.

It's got to be QoL. It's not too early for a new 3DS technologically speaking, but Iwata just said that it's a profit-generating platform for them. They'll ride it out at least another year. Then again, with that patent that just surfaced...if they are using that modular approach, they will probably release sooner than later in order to be first to market with such an idea.

Hopefully next gen handheld.

This is what I'm hoping too. Something that's actually up with the times (Power, software OS, and back-end infrastructure).

It will have a lot of "cross-buy" features and pairing with the Wii U to build a strong software library. And it will pair perfectly with Nintendo's next console; a controller-less box that integrates with the handheld to make a truly hybrid console-mobile experience.

I can dream...
I'm sure it's QoL BS that will just make me further despair about the state of Nintendo

Why would they show the QoL platform when they are trying to distance it from their main (game) business? Unless they really are trying to squeeze the QoL thing in as a "third pillar".

Still banking on a small(er) tablet-like augmented reality "window" with the usual buttons/sticks on either side.

Have pokemon battles in your living room or driveway! Huzzah!

They talked about adding QOL as another major part of their business during the last investor meeting, how they are going to accomplish that is a mystery at this point.

Not sure if they would unveil that at E3 though. Seems like the kind of location and time that would lead to immidiate backlash and mocking.

Backward compatibility or not, successors being announced always bring previous gen systems to a speedy conclusion sales-wise.

I feel like relying on stuff like cross buy and a "portable console experience" is exactly why the Vita has done so much worse than the 3DS

It wouldn't be a month before E3 without some kind of crazy... "Nintendo will announce something AWESOME" rumor.

I do not expect anything less than a new 3DS model, one that merges the original 3DS' design with the XL's for an in-between price point.

A 3DSi (3DS U) wouldn't be a 3DS replacement. It would be like like the DSi, fully functioning 3DS, with added features for new games that support new the hardware. The new Pokemon, for example, could feature a larger world. Can still play 3DS games, so Nintendo would only profit.

Either way, if there's a console that desprately needs a redesign it's the OG 3DS. Something slim with a nice design, it doesn't even need to have new features.
