Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne |OT| GO GET THE BUFFS!

I imagine it's just a PS3 power thing. Hopefully we can get a smoother experience if/when (my money's on when) Sony gets a PS2 emulator up and running on the PS4

edit: I actually didn't mean to quote anyone, thanks Requiem

Any newcomers playing for the first time? What are your impressions, if so? Hope everyone is enjoying the game (despite technical issues being reported by some). :)

Where can you find legit copy of Nocturne nowadays though. If you know I'd be interested as well.

I'm pretty sure it was republished at one point or another? At least in the US. Amazon has it for $17, and cheaper if you want to go through a third party buyer. Likewise Gamestop had it at $20 online not too long ago.

At least in the US, new copies are $17.50 on Amazon. Used are like $12.

I bought a new copy for the same price last year from Amazon. Seems to be a cheap and available game

Hahaha, well, I feel like I must explain: Shengar and I both live in Indonesia, where like, 95% or perhaps even 99% of software sold are pirated materials, so I am just asking him where he can get a legit copy if he knows because I'd be interested as well.

Maybe buying it from some shop in the US and have them send it here, but it's just so much hassle.

God bless all my old friends/And god bless me too, why pretend?
Such a good game, please buy it if you down already own it!

Great dungeon design, characters, everything, so good.

Well, I'm asking that in purely technical reason. Because from the emulation thread, I found that some games are just hard to emulate (RIP Ace Combat ;___; ). I wonder if Nocturne is one of them.

It's available since forever from Amazon. But you know, the taxes and other BS makes the price hiked up as high as a new AAA games.

Damn I didn't know about this. If only my PS2 still with me D:

It must be, it runs on the same engine as DDS1 and 2, which the EU publisher of those games tried to release, but they said the technical aspects made it impossible.

I don't see any problems with the emulation. Welcome to Nocturne on a flat screen TV. The game has a blur filter thing that looks better on CRT and stands out way too much on flat panel HD

I haven't seen this posted yet, so for new and returning players here's an amazing tool for saving time in this game: the Heretic Mansion Fusion Calculator. It's a great app that has comprehensive information about all of the game's demons, but is particularly useful for finding demons that have specific moves and finding out which demons can be fused into a specific demon that you want.

Obviously, it spoils every demon and move in the game so beware if something like that bothers you.

Understandably, some might have reservations about downloading a strange .exe from some unknown website and it's been a while since I last visited it. I just re-downloaded the app and fooled around with it for a bit, and my browser security and anti-virus software hasn't picked up anything malicious from the site or the .exe, but if anyone finds a problem that comes from either the site or the program I'll take down the link immediately.

Enjoy!

Guys I am thinking of picking Hard Mode when I dl this game later, what do you think? I beat it on hard mode long ago but its been so long that I forgot what Hard Mode changes.

For one thing, your first level up absolutely needs to be spent on Vitality so that you don't get killed by the second Preta encounter.

If you thought Matador was bad, wait till you see the true final boss:

Beating this crap minigame (along with getting the rest of the magatama) is the only way to get access to the Masakado magatama and an extra optional dungeon.

I imagine the guy who made this went on to make Rapunzel in Catherine.

Put a couple hours in, man I love this game. I haven't played it in, I dunno, six or seven years but the memories came flooding back. One of my favorite RPGs ever, and I haven't had any issues/freezes yet.

yup it was republished like 2010ish... i remember paying 80$ for my copy used from gamestop back on '06-'07, and thinking i hit the jackpot... until i saw the reprints a few years ago dropped the price to 15-20$ NEW

If you feel like you've wasted points in the wrong stat you can always make use of the full kagutsuchi ticket-trick. That's probably considered cheating though.

Are other people having trouble getting audio to work in this game, through a receiver? The issue is the same for any PS2 Classic I try to play on my PS3. I've tried every possible setting for the receiver, and can confirm sound works fine when outputted directly to a TV.

Provided you do the Labyrinth of Amala, a physical-based hero will go very far. But magic is super strong too.

Do you think it'd be better to buy the PSN version, or buy a physical version for like 20 bucks and emulate it in HD using the disc?

Hard to say, because I haven't had enough hands-on time with the PSN release! Some people are having issues, others aren't... Some say it's severe, others say it's not. Hard to say! I have emulated Nocturne before and it ran fine for me, for what it's worth, so picking up a physical copy may not be a bad idea. Hope this helps?

For Pierce?

Even without it Physical > Magical to me.

With it, Physical >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Magical.

And like I said, one of the magatamas stupidly requires 30 strength to obtain, so if you are a collector you're pretty much forced to go physical anyways.

Yeah, my local game store has a copy for $18. Gonna buy that.

Aw yeah, the best game ever is out on PSN. Can't wait to dive into the gritty world of Nocturne again after 10 years.

Bought the PS2 version a few month ago but never actually played it >_<

I need to finish Xenoblade first before diving into this, too many games and not enough time. Damned.

At the very least, we can hope that when PS2 classics come to the PS4, Remote Play is possible.

This game doesn't shy away from nasty random encounters. Six enemies in a row, then immediately followed up with three more while I'm weakened from the first six. But I love it that way.

I love this game so much. I used to play it like crazy when I had the time, even experimented a lot on fusion so I could make nearly every weak monster into a powerhouse withing minutes that could kill the final boss. I made a video of a pure Jack Brothers team against him:

FINAL BOSS SPOILERS

Too bad it's not the Raidou version, would have been more interesting as they also changed some weaknesses there.

Furthermore I also recommend using buffs and debuffs against every boss, most of them don't have Dekaja and Dekunda like in DDS.

He's really just the first boss that challenges most people who play RPGs and don't understand the importance of buffs and strengths/weaknesses. He's pretty easy once you know what you need to do.

Oh ok, that makes sense. Considering it was the first mainline SMT in the west I guess I could see why he got such a reputation back in the day.
Guess i'm back in it!

Presumably. They only posted once in the thread, and I have yet to see anyone else say they've had the game lock up. Thus, I wouldn't be worried about that. The rest of the emulation issues are all really minor. They're just, as I said, highly annoying.

I started over and i'm currently well past that part, thankfully it hasn't frozen again.

This is sooo good. I've never played it before but love every other SMT and Persona game I have played, and long been wanting Nocturne. Best weird vibe. This is gonna be running on my PS3 for weeks to come, I can tell..

Nocturne newcomer, reporting for apocalypse duty!
I played for some time last night and beat the first boss (
Forneus
). Next time I get to play might not be until tomorrow, but I can't wait to really dive in.

Also, I was quite tickled to see that this game does, in fact, feature Dante from the Devil May Cry™ series.
