I know what you're saying. There wouldn't exactly be anything to lose by keeping things a secret and leading us on for a bit until they were ready to spill the beans. I'm inclined to believe they are telling the truth, but that small bit of doubt is something I myself can understand.

Masterchief hunted by his own ONI clone sounds great - especially if you alternatively play as either character like in Halo 2. Play chapter 1 as MC, chapter 2 as ONI dude, and maybe even have some events altered based on what you do as each character (maybe, but that would be neat, wouldn't have to be a major thing.) For example, as MC, you end selecting door red instead of door blue in base X, which means that when you play as ONI you see a security recording of master chief entering the base thorough door red.

That would be amazing, and a great call back to one of the best Halo games.
