NFC confirmed for Smash Bros for Wii U

I would've thought that, much like how Melee and Brawl has more than one way to unlock hidden characters, the NFC figures would be a third way to do it. Sort of like:

TO UNLOCK CAPTAIN FALCON

Beat single player in 8 minutes

- OR -

Play multiplayer for 4 hours

- OR -

Scan your NFC character in

I'd be fine with that. I can carry my Ganondorf figurine everywhere and scan that shit in for guaranteed main in anybody's version. :D

As long as the requirements to unlock by playing the game aren't ridiculous (just keep them on the same level of difficulty or challenge as the previous games) I'm totally okay with this. And it might actually be a great move for Nintendo.

I'm french. It is not clearly said but it looks to implied that Bayonnetta 2 is going to release this year. I did not know that before.

I don´t have problem about having NFC trophies.

What will really put me down would be the special editions sold in some stores or in promotional events (Mostly USA, Japan) Living in South America is a sad thing with these kinds of things.

New characters make perfect sense for this. This also gives a clear differentiation between the 3DS and Wii U.

And, yes, my guess is that Nintendo was waiting for E3 for this news.

New characters would be shitty for the competitive scene. Having to spend money on character figurines just to have every character in the game for tournaments would be a travesty. Also, Sakurai has already gone on record saying that the character roster would be the same for both the 3DS and Wii U version so the chances of NFC actually giving you new characters are slim to none.

At most it'll be for trophies, at least I hope so.

But I don't buy this as fact yet anyway. It wouldn't be the first time a subsidiary of a company says one thing but it's actually wrong.

And suddenly Namco Bandai´s involvement in the project makes even more sense.

Bandai sells loads of toys and all kinds of (pretty high quality) figurines.

I can already see the future we are headed towards. I will be in the minority for wanting a game's content to actually be on the disc it ships with instead of sold piecemeal with a bunch of plastic I have no use for.

Trying not to overreact...

that's not necessarily how it will work. especially if you read the "custom memory card" concept behind Nintendo NFC

Not interested in buying a bunch of dumb figurines, so I hope they're not required for any interesting features.

I think you'll be allowed to purchase and play the game normally, if you want

what can figurines add to gameplay? honest question.

probably nothing. It is SMASH pushing their NFC and not viceversa, for the moment.

> Everybody has their own NFC figurine with their own data on it
> Use your own figurine on your friend's gamepad
> Play with your customized character

Probably this. But also: use your "Charizard" (with its stats or experience or whatever) in future Nintendo Wii U (and 3DS) games too. So for example, Pokken.

As long it is not playable characters.... ok for trophies, faster unlocking of otherwise avaliable characters and alternate clothing

As far as we know it is supposed to be released during Summer in Japan. So I'd expect it to be released during Summer/Fall in western territories.

The thing is, how much does it cost to see all the content in a Skylanders game? I'm not saying Nintendo is Activision but I can't help being a little worried until I see some details assuring me I won't have to pay $200+ to get all the content in the next Smash Bros.

Nintendo may be dabbling in the realms of DLC, Season's Passes, Collectors Editions, F2P et al, but they are generally very good about making sure you won't be ripped off by whatever they introduced. I'm very certain Sakurai feels strongly enough against content being behind paywalls, so everything you can access with an NFC figure you could do through regular means.

As long as this isn't the only method of unlocking characters I'm ok with that. And if the method is fair and not meant to price-gouge.

Guys, stop fearing that you must buy some plastic to unlock DLC, this is Nintendo, so maybe in 10 years.
Baby steps.

I really hope characters aren't figurine-locked... But I'll buy them anyway.

I can almost guarantee that won't be the case. You can't limit how many people can unlock a character because nintendo can't print enough plastic figures. It would be like trying to buy a leonardo figure back in 1990. Everyone will have to settle for raph, and no one will be happy.

Well, what if if was DLC-type content that you would've been paying extra for anyway?

Supply limit for DLC? I can't imagine locking real game content behind figures for smash bros. Trophies, stickers, and MAYBE alternate costumes. It won't be anything required to 100% the game, I imagine.

Here's my idea for what they'll be used for: MEMORY CARDS
They'll be memory cards to transfer your 'custom' character profile from game to game. You really like that custom Link moveset you created, and want to play with it at a friend's house? Transfer your Link profile to your Link NFP figure, then you can bring it to a friend's house, use it on your 3DS copy, etc.

NPF IS HOW YOU WILL LINK THE 3DS AND WII U VERSIONS OF THE GAME. That's why sakurai couldn't talk about it before.

Edit: I do like the idea of unlocking a character EARLY with NFP, but not being the only way to unlock. Sounds good to me. Really easy for tourney setups, too. Just bring the NFP stuff, unlock all characters if they aren't already, problem solved.

As long as they actually look cool unlike those weird Pokemon Rumble ones I'm totally in

Cool looking Mega Man and Little Mac figures? Um yes

Stuff like this is why I'm excited for E3.

My curiosity about Nintendo's Wii U plans is at an all-time high and I'm curious about the direction they will take with future content-heavy games.

This is the most likely outcome but I can't help but feel a little worried. Yes, Nintendo has been doing alright with these potentially gouging practices lately (Rusty's, Mario Golf DLC, etc.) but I'm always worried that their financial situation will cause them to make a bad move. It doesn't help that I feel like I'm in the minority with this, most Nintendo fans seem to be willing to give them a direct line to their checking account to stock up on a bunch of figurines. Just look at all of the "take my money" comments in this thread.

Someone will be pissed at this news. Let's see who it will be.

Anyone who wants to use all the content of this video game without having to buy figurines that waste space and essentially jack up the access price for the content. But I guess we need to see how this will be implemented.

Isn't raph the most popular ninja turtle?

Remember, Nintendo never said the figures and NFC were for unlocking things.
They seem to act more like characters you level up in games.
Maybe for use in a meta game.
Like you beat some Smash Bros with Mario figure and he gains strength and stamina and thay transfers over to another game.

IntelliHeath

As in "Heathcliff"
I would guess that it's more likely to be figurines that would hold the saves (records; customized move sets, etc) so people can bring it over to their friends' houses, etc.

I would love to know how many hyped people actually have a wii u in this thread.

Hopefully the figures are very detailed.

Yes.
And Shamsh is the perfect game to sell cross-over brands (not a "Mario series" or a "Pokemon series" of figures, but potentially ALL Nintendo IPs, looking at Smash roster) also to a demographic different from the "childish" one (if they'll put a figure for free in bundle with the game, everyone will have it in home, not only the one who whould be interested in the figures for themselves)

Btw, this interview confirms other two bad feelings I already had for next Nintendo E3. Does someone wonder which?

This may be the only game I' willing to buy NFC figures for.

My guess is that these figurines be used to transfer customized character movesets between games.

They way how it was singled out makes me think that Bayo 2 is actually the next game to come in Europe after MK8. I expect a July-August release.

Hopefully the figures are at a reasonable price, but Nintendo knows its fans are suckers for Nintendo products.

I would be happy fi they are avaliable outside of USA and Japan =P

Most SKylanders and Disney Infinity figurines are IMPOSSIBLE to find here
