Ubisoft take their second All Formats No1 of the year, and smash the week 1 sales record for new IP in the process as event title ‘Watch Dogs’ takes the crown.

It eclipses the new IP record set by ‘L.A Noire’ three years ago with an increase of 58%. In terms of units, ‘Watch Dogs’ breaks into the Top 20 for best ever launch weeks taking 17th spot on the list. The new release finds itself in good company with only titles from mega-brands GTA, Call of Duty, FIFA & Battlefield ahead of it. For Ubisoft it’s also a personal best with ‘Watch Dogs’ beating ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ as their biggest launch in the UK by 17%. By format PS4 dominates software sales, boosted by exclusive content and the release of a new Watch Dogs hardware bundle. This accounts for just over 53% of PS4 hardware sales while claiming the credit for a near 94% increase in total sales for the PS4 hardware format this week.

While there is no contest for top spot Wii U exclusive ‘Mario Kart 8’ races comfortably into second place. The much loved series makes an impressive debut becoming the bestselling week 1 for any Wii U title since launch and the second best in the Mario Kart series ever. ‘Mario Kart 8’ like ‘Watch Dogs’ also launches an official hardware bundle this week boosting the sales of Wii U hardware by a whopping 666%, of which 82% are the Mario Kart 8 Bundle. Last week’s No1 ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order’ (-65%) makes way for the newcomers, dropping down to round off the Top 3. With half term in full swing many titles benefit from increased sales. ‘FIFA 14’ (+46%) is at No4 while ‘Minecraft: PS3 Edition’ (+20%) continues to sell strongly despite dropping to No5. Outside the Top 10 there’s a re-entry for ‘Borderlands 2’ which is propelled back into the chart at No18 thanks to the release of the new PS Vita version.

I'm surprised that Watch Dogs XBone beat MK8.

I'm fucking gobsmacked that Borderlands 2 hit the charts at all, let alone the top 20.

vinnygambini

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Bruno or anyone for that matter, do you have the opening sales for MK7?

MK8 beat it, that's quite stellar.

Really?
Nintendo is dead in the UK, despite MK.

I'm more interested in Spain, France, Italy, or whoever, to see how long MK stays in the top 10. That'll be a bigger test imo.

I mean, Yoshi's New Island was up there for like a month. (EDIT: In Italy I think)

Good to see Mario Kart chart pretty highly.

Disappointed to see no other Wii U game chart whatsoever, you'd have thought it might give games like NSMBU/3D World a bit of a bump.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

We just know it sold under 58,000 units.
While, for MK8, we know it's between ~50,000 (WD 360) and ~110,000 (WD One).

Excellent numbers all round. Very pleasing to see.

I do wish Borderlands 2 had done a little better myself, but I suppose you can only expect so much from a port this late.

5 PS4 titles to 5 XBO titles in top 40.

Which is mighty impressive for XBO..

Is XBO hardware = PS4 hardware base in UK?

With the free game promotion they're currently running its more likely to do the opposite as people have all the new wii u games they wanted for the week.

~200k in PS4 favor... my estimates based that Xbone only sold more this year in the 4-weeks until TF launch.

Eg.

PS4: 750k
Xbone: 550k

Something close to that.

The gap can be bigger because OS4 is constantly selling more each week in UK.

Why would it when a purchase lets you download NSMBU or one of many other games for free?

You're right, I should've picked DK instead of NSMBU as an example.

Still, doesn't bode well if people are buying it only for Mario Kart + one other.

2 games in one week isn't enough for most new hardware owners? I mean it would've been nice to see 3D World or Tropical Freeze creep back up into the bottom of the charts but I'm not sure their absence really heralds anything particularly negative either?

Mario Kart Wii first four weeks of sales:

[Week 01] 01 (NE) MARIO KART WII (NINTENDO) - 186,000 / NEW
[Week 02] 01 (01) MARIO KART WII (NINTENDO) - 145,000 / 331,000 (-22%)
[Week 03] 02 (01) MARIO KART WII (NINTENDO) - 55,000 / 386,000 (-62%)
[Week 04] 05 (02) MARIO KART WII (NINTENDO) - 21,500 / 407,500 (-61%)

At that time there were around 3 million Wii systems sold.

Yeah, this is how I feel. If no other games get a little bump in a few weeks then there will be a reason for concern.

When games like Skate 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 are above them, it kinda is.

UK update

May 2014
Retail software units: 1.15 million (-9.1%)
Retail software revenue: £30.2 million (+7.2%)

YTD May 2014
Retail software units: 8.6 million (-9.6%)
Retail software revenue: £235.2 million (+2.7%)

Revenue good. Units bad.
Did you have the units sales numbers for the week 20? (the Wolfenstein week, not Watch Dogs)

Wow Watch Dogs had a monster opening to be in the top 20 UK launches of all time

Ubisoft must be so happy right now

PS4 hardware sales seem to have basically doubled this week due to WD although without hard numbers it's hard to read too much from it

Nice to see Mario Kart chart highly but I think it will be more front loaded than usual for core nintendo titles. Maybe not though

And WTF Skate 3? lol

I'm positively surprised. I know the UK is one of the Vita's better markets but I still didn't expect it to chart. The promise of games like this were one (if not the) reason I bought a vita in the first place. First time I've looked forward to a 12 hour cattle class flight in a long while! Borderlands with lashings of G&T.

I'm interested in the comparrison between 360/XBO and PS3/PS4 sales but would need to see alot more data before jumping to a conclusion.

But I'm going to do that anyway.

More PS3 owners have upgraded to a PS4 than 360 to an XBO?

Note, this is not a comment on which platform has sold more copies and/or why.

It was 530k vs 364k at the end of 2013. I don't think the handful of weeks (not even sure it was 4) the XB1 outsold the PS4 were enough to keep the difference at 200k.

The relative units of the PS3 and 360 basically fall along last known installed base lines.

I would rather opine that the last-gen installed base is just less-actively purchasing games for their system now.

And that the PS4/XBO split is also due to both installed base (and possible audience affinity, as titles like Assassin's Creed have performed better from memory than installed base would dictate.)

Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition is here to stay:

[Week 01] 03 (NE) PS3 MINECRAFT: PLAYSTATION 3 EDITION
[Week 02] 02 (03) PS3 MINECRAFT: PLAYSTATION 3 EDITION (+49%)
[Week 03] 05 (02) PS3 MINECRAFT: PLAYSTATION 3 EDITION (+20%)

The comparison is not fair because word of mouth took time to spread and at that time the game cost more money, console Minecraft is now very popular. Anyway, it is evident it will also do extremely well on PS3.

Was the Borderlands 2 Vita 2000 Bundle available in the UK?

If so we'd be seeing something of a bundling effect I imagine but I can't find the SKU anywhere?

If it wasn't bundled than I'm thoroughly impressed by it charting tbh

Welp I was wrong about that. Minecraft is like the most evergreen title that has ever existed

Well in the Titanfall week the PR said Xbone outsold PS4 four weeks in a row... and after that was the inFAMOUS week so PS4 again sold more... I can't see Xbone selling more after that (April).

The difference per week was small too... 5k max I guess... so the gap didn't grow that much in PS4 favor so because that I think something close to 200k is reasonable... maybe 250k.

The fact is PS4 and Xbone userbases are not neck neck in UK... there is a good gap.

I agree... I guess some 360 owners migrated to PS4 instead XBO...
