Mario Kart 8 |OT| 8 oW

It seems somewhat odd to me that advanced techniques in Mario Kart have always been frowned upon. It's not even that advanced in this case. It's not hard to do, and the gains are not that broken by any means.

Do you also think combos in the original Street Fighter 2 is cheating?

I know right..

Dull roster, characters still dont have their own special abilities (if frog suit mario could hop higher and get better boosts, if ice mario could freeze the track...), no stat tracking online, no leaderboards, no battle mode specific arenas, no track editor, no reward for 3 stars, no special unlockable elite difficult track, like say champions roads in 3D World, antigravity really adds nothing to the gameplay, its a pointless gimmick that you barely notice when playing since the camera rotates with you.

I mean, could a game be more bare bones than this? They couldn't have spent more than a year working on this. There is so much missing and so much that could have made this a much more complete and exciting package. Instead though it's $60 to play MKWii in HD. Really.

There's this fellow I know that I think you'll get along great with. His name is Spieler Eins...

Interesting, I've hopped after a boost before to realign myself when I felt like I might not make a corner, and I never noticed that it stretches the boosts out.

I can't say I like it, but I wouldn't call it cheap/cheating. How many techniques developed in games unintentionally? If there's one (personal) problem I have with Mario Kart, it's going into auto-pilot after I've learned the maps. Having some additional input/strategy like this is welcome. It doesn't seem like it's useful in all situations, and it's a good way to leave yourself open to other players. It seems like it takes SOME skill to successfully execute.

I don't mind if it is patched out, though.

Note to self. Dragging bombs are stupid in this game.

There seems to be a 50/50 chance of them backfiring on you which is way higher than in MK7. I haven't figured out if there's a formula that decides it or if it's totally random but for now I've been going back to my bomb-sniping days :)

Oh c'mon. The core racing experience is great, but everything surrounding it is barebones as could be. There's a LOT of room for improvement in plenty of areas of MI8. Likes not act like this was some untouchable masterwork here.

Did Capcom come out and say it was unintentional? If so, then yes.

Deems wavedashing to be just as much of a cheat if not more so.

I don't consider either of these things to be "cheating," but they are both absolutely "glitch exploitation" which I think it's perfectly reasonable to not like, and rather not do. They aren't in the spec, the game is not balanced around them, exploiting them regularly is basically playing a different game than the developers made, and a different game than you thought you were buying. It's not an "advanced technique" built on mastery of actual mechanics, it's "oh hey the game's broken and I can do this because of it."

Obviously there are degrees of severity here, but I think metagames that build around glitch exploitation are pretty shitty.

I just hope it doesn't skew the way online racing works, in the same way that It was always dry bones / tank / snaking to win with Mario Kart DS

Long story short, third place should always have his sights set on first place, not second place. Second and third constantly going back and forth ensures that first place will run away with the race.

I figured this out with the first Mario Kart. If you're further behind than second, you should always try to reserve your aggression for the person in first place unless it's absolutely necessary to get into position to attack him. Otherwise you're just letting the first place guy run away with the race (especially without the rubber-banding the CPU gives you).

Anything that requires any new sort of knowledge about the game outside of the instruction manual and the least amount of practice is cheating, don'tcha know?
It's akin to throwing sand in your opponent's eyes!

Man, I love this. And the whole "learning a new technique in the game = cheating" is amusing.

And then the whole "exploits = cheats" thing... Boy howdy!

Man... just wait 'til they find out about the whole fighting game genre. They're in for some nasty surprises.

It's an unintentional exploit in the boosting mechanics. That's cheating to me.
I really don't think that it was unintentional. The producer of MKDS said snaking was intentional (I don't believe that one though) but MKWii and MK7 both had minor forms of snaking still present (someone correct me on that one if I'm wrong since I never tried it in either).

If it really seems to be ruining the online experience and people really start getting up in arms about it they may considering taking it out in whatever big patch they prepare to take out the inevitable glitches in tracks people find but I'm not sure how they'd fix it without changing how drifting works.

tl;dr version is I doubt the developers were unaware of it.

I'm glad that, time and time again, this suggestion falls on deaf ears.

Yeah because it would actually set a mario kart game apart from the others. We cant have that. Making games interesting and unique is no longer what Nintendo does. Lets just keep this franchise stale as shit and shoot down every possible idea that could actually push it forward. How is this franchise any different than call of duty? Neither of them are progressing at all.

Why would you call it cheating, exactly?

It was an exploit unintended by the developers. Just because it's the only thing that makes the game good doesn't change that.

I don't see why hop snaking isn't considered cheating but killing the first Maneater before entering the boss arena in Demon's Souls is.

Not suggesting it's perfect in any way, but stuff like "couldn't have taken more than a year, it's just MKWii HD" is just laughable.

I don't know about you guys, but that new technique is fun as hell to do. I been hopping for fun for years in Mario Kart games, so it's nice to see you at least get something out it this time. Hell, I use Yoshi because I like to imagine he's flutter jumping every time I hop. While it does look stupid when 12 people are doing, it's something that can easily be mastered by hitting time trials for 5 minutes. We're not talking about snaking here.

Can I just say how much I fucking hate Sweet Sweet Canyon? I'm missing three stars on the Mushroom Cup and I just can't for the life of me finish this race in first place. Something about those dumb bends.

Oh, and the game keeps giving me a coin when there's a red shell coming after me, just as I'm about to cross the finish line. So. Much. Frustration.

So it's kind of similar to extending boosts in F-Zero GX by turning off the accelerator. Nice.

a little bit, yeah.

honestly the calls for it as an "exploit", "cheat", "snaking" etc are comically overblown. The comparison to advanced fighting game techniques is much more apt.

In regard to Kinsei in particular... he just stated his real problem right above:

It's damn near impossible to win with my favorite character + kart combo (Barring lucky items of course) even when every one isn't cheating.
I genuinely mean no offense... but it sounds like your problem comes more down to the online scene being extremely competitive, especially with you playing your preferred character. and then hopping just adding further salt into the wound.

the reality is that the removal of the technique (if Nintendo even does that) ultimately won't fix your problem. That the online scene for the game is hyper-competitive with no real "casual" mode unless you happen to get lucky in your matchmaking. Unfortunately I don't know what to tell you. I mean the likelihood of that having happened with this game (despite being "mario" and "kiddie") was already ridiculously high. The same as it will be for Smash Bros. Competitive Nintendo titles hilariously always draw highly competitive players to them. Having played MKDS, MK7, and MKWii I'm not sure how anyone really could have expected this game to not have a hyper-competitive online presence.

It does suck that you're not having fun with the online component. I mean I get it. But the reality is this title was always destined for this level of play online, hopping or not. If you're expecting to get first place online, you better be ready to put in some time and rank up your skills. It is funny how online nintendo games aren't a bunch of 8-11 year old kids stumbling through the games randomly pressing buttons giving you a quick win. And if they do happen to be kids, they are STILL smoking you on every turn (and in this game, likely hopping their entire way down the track).

It is what it is. Fortunately this game gives us private lobbies and hopefully at some point adds a ranked ladder mode to siphon off many of the more hyper-competitive players.

Can you guys check out this eBay listing for me? It's the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle for £170 (it's £240 in the shops). I'm just wondering if there are any red flags other than the price? If it's legit I'd buy it right now.

You're not wrong about the negatives, I'm fairly disappointed in the whole package honestly, especially with the lack of options, whatever the fuck happened with Battle Mode, no race times, no on-screen map, track design I don't think is particularly challenging for the new tracks, etc., but it's so much better balanced than MKWii, the bikes aren't all out of whack, the level of detail on the characters and tracks to make them all feel so alive doesn't come across as a half-assed job to me at all, and the new replays are so fucking hilarious that I feel it's not really fair to say this is just MKWii HD. For starters I've had more fun in 3 days on this than I did in the 3 weeks I played MKWii before dropping it forever, and that's not just the better hardware doing that.

So I'll agree this doesn't feel like a finished game, it just happens to be the most fun I've had in an undercooked game in years, and we certainly get plenty of those.

Guys, just had a fucking BLAST in a voice-chat session with daydreams, HawthorneKitty, Ahzuran, Nyteshade, metatarsal, InvisibleStride, and Kinsei. Seriously, this game is on a whole 'nother level when you mix in voice chat. We're done for tonight, but we're going to try and play again this upcoming weekend (most likely Saturday, but maybe Friday as well).

Let me know if you want to be part of this. Everyone so far has been crazy fun to race with and there's nothing like hearing a million people yelling "FUCK!" as you mow them down with shells. Message me and get on board with GAF Chat!

Also, big shout out to Bradical. Haha, we couldn't figure out who you were when you wondered in the room.

Auto-correct? lol

No matter, there's showcasing to be done! I managed to condense almost 2 hours of that craziness into 18 minutes of high points.

It was the most fun I've had with MK8 so far.

Every fighting game ever is shitty then? :x

Only the glitch-centric metagames! I dunno, I just like the idea of a game actually being what it was designed to be, not just falling apart in the hands of eager gamers. My criticism here is less for the people who exploit the glitch, but more for the developers that put out broken games in the first place.

From position to place in the top 2 to coming in 8th in a period of about 2 seconds.

And... connection error. I think that is going to be it for me today.

I'd say beware of his feedback ratings, some of them have been negative in the last month.

Yeah I noticed that, but he has good feedback overall. My worry is he went legit for awhile to build feedback and has now decided to cash in big on a popular item. It just seems too good to be true, but if it true I wouldn't want to miss out.
