Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
The only "Halo" thing about it is Sci Fi.

As FPSs go, it's pretty damn different. ADS being a major thing, default sprint (although I admit that was in 4 but that's a different discussion entirely), enemy AI, basic weapon handling etc.

I really can't see many comparisons you could draw to Halo.

What it screams to me is Borderlands. This game really does seem like an MMO take on Borderlands. Coop focus, very similar looking combat, very similar RPG style mechanics, a focus on loot, medium sized areas interconnected areas to explore.

Make the game cel-shaded and I would believe that this is a Borderlands spin off.

funny, i see a larger scale reskinned halo with an unnecessary ADS and space magic. the core gameplay looks very very similar. i'm not knocking it btw

My initial reaction is it looks kind of boring. I'll have to play it myself to make an accurate judgment. Hope it's playable at E3. I want this to be a great game.

Hmm, was never that interested in this game personally. I won't be too harsh on it considering its a leak but yeah that video wasn't too flattering. Did look very Haloish to me though but just not quite as good.

I dunno, will still probably give it a try when it comes out.

The aesthetic is very similar to Reach. If the player didn't use ADS and fought Fallen on Old Russia with that one track playing, it'd be almost like a remaster of the Pillar of Autumn level from Reach.

Other similarities can be drawn as well, as it's obviously a Bungie game; however, it's clearly going to move and play at a different pace and playing style.

What part of that game video screamed MMO to you? I see the reference to Borderland but its Totally got a Halo vibe to it way more in gameplay than Borderlands.

why are people getting upset when they say it looks like it plays like halo? lol

because we've already played that game six times?

i remain optimistic, but this footage isn't wowing me. Halo-style combat or not, the guy is certainly playing it like a Halo game.

Not only that, but the one vid I saw looked just like firefight in Halo: in an area with dudes spawning around you. Not representative of the entire game

I'll say one thing though: weapons and powers aren't immediately interesting. Could be cuz dude didnt know how to play, but hopefully at e3 they show some interesting guns and power strategies. Still not seeing anything as interesting as the OG Halo plasma and bullets versus shields and skin. Might be because they took out the ability to pick up enemy guns, probably cuz they want you to grind them out like borderlands. So no more running out in the field to switch guns to combat different enemies anymore

Still, gunplay so far is a notch below Halo so far

totally don't understand that either. It's pretty darn close whether you want it to be or not. Sure mechanics are tweaked and there are deeper levels of gameplay here, but at first blush it's hard to reasonably deny.

I hope the AI gets smarter for the final release. They look like the pop out, sit there for a beat, fire a few shots and absorb the player's bullets. I was hoping next gen would bring some next gen AI to the arena.

Remember that halo AI look kind of lame in normal mode as well. They die too fast to see anything interesting.

This really is going to be a straight up sci-fi Borderlands, ain't it? Well that settles it then, it's time for my wallet to spread it's legs.

Day 1.

I hope Bungie will give us the option to turn off the enemy health bars and damage numbers. I don't mind it on bosses, but every single enemy having a health bar is too much IMO.

Oh, and now that Marty is gone, do you think they will let us play without music? It would be really nice to finally have that option.

I've never understood the point of having damage numbers. It ruins the experience for me.

On the game, I quite like the look of it but want to have a look at the PvP side of it too.

If it plays like halo and multiplayer is good, I will be in love with this game.

I'm indifferent to campaign,it's just going to be a farming fest.

The footage looks boring and bland. That's the best way to describe it I think. More importantly from this clip I see nothing that would even hints why it had to be completely online and don't see what it's offering over other shooters out there that offer wide areas to play around in.

This is disappointing. They managed to grab me with the announcement of the game. I knew the final product was not going to live up to what they were pitching. That almost never happens with third parties. However I didn't expect the blandness. While it is a slice from the alpha and that has a different meaning when it comes to console games it's a far more honest slice I think one can get. Unless the game really is big set piece after piece all the time and this is the limited stuff. If anything I'm more likely to believe this gameplay is an example of what would be the norm for players.

However I've soured on FPS. If it was third person and that resulted in how combat was done maybe this would come off better.

Looks pretty bland to be honest, I was expecting more.

How many times has this been said watching pre-release video? Has Watch Dogs not taught any lessons? That game was being critiqued to hell and back via video and it turned out good. If I watched every game play video and deemed it not worthy then I would be buying a lot less games but to me, this looks pretty good and it cannot be discounted that watching video is not even close than getting into it with some friends.

At the 7 second mark in the video?

It's so jarring that I initially thought the video switched to another player's perspective.

My mistake, I misread what you wrote. I guess I am just used to it, but I feel the transition is pretty clean to me, at least in gameplay. Also, the other reason it looks a little off is because I am dropping the artifact, changing perspectives to first person and teleporting all within about a couple frames of animation. Once you hit teleport you drop the artifact you switch to first person if you have a gun equipped, so that can be pretty jarring for someone that doesn't know what is going on. The teleport part of it is probably why it looks like another player perspective, I literally teleported about 30 feet in an instant to start fighting the guy.

I still think watchdog was a bad game. I don't know what you were going for with that example.

I really hope they go all out with shit like dungeons, raids, rare/legendary gear and such. They're already scratching the surface of what makes me love online RPGs (diablo-likes and MMOs alike).

They're already on the right track with having unique weapons and gear. I'm glad it's not randomized stuff like Borderlands. I found loot in Borderlands to be super boring, just because it was just a bunch of randomized stats and properties. Nothing felt unique.

I also do like that they're taking a page from PSO2 with online sessions intersecting with each other. I hope that's actually pretty prominent, and not just a "oh that happened to me once" sort of thing.

The more online MMO-feeling the game is (and no, I don't mean grinding for epics) and less Borderlands, the better. The game is already always online. Might as well use the medium to its fullest.

I hope so also. Hopefully we will find out soon.

I like the graphics and the pace, not sure about that 3rd person switch though.

Agreed. Make a 3rd person game if need to show the full character. Having this awkward transition puts me out of the immersion. It's really is as if you are actually a camera in the position where the "eyes" are.

Back on Topic: Everything about this game screams focus testing: From the loot, co-op, customization and content, it feels like a AAA version of Clash of Clans - a formula designed around getting the maximum appeal to the general consumers. For Bungie, I expected a lot more but I guess that's where the 500 million backing stems from.

Game looks exactly like what I thought it would be.

Because I didn't set my expectations on this being anything other than an online-co-op loot shooter with some light MMO elements in a semi-open world Sci-fi setting.

Are people just so jaded from the whole "Next big thing" buzz they bought into with Titanfall that they have to tear down a game for being exactly what it purports to be? If you didn't know what this was going in from the info already out there, you have only yourself to blame.

I know I say this on GAF a lot, but I will truly never understand the immersion argument. Immersion is overrated. If I'm going to do some cool shit, kill my immersion just so I can see my character do something cool. I'm down with that.

That said, no game has really ever given me immersion anyway, so there's nothing to kill.

That said, Halo went into third person for certain actions (like assassinations) and no one seemed to care (in fact, it was awesome). Why is this any different? It's in fact using the same concept.

This game as left alot on the table and not tried to explain what it is. Hell we had a post on Neogaf last month? That stated this was still an MMO. I feel Gaf is the most informed and if they don't know then the developer has failed. But the beta will fix most soon.

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
I had high hopes for this game until I saw it being played. Had hoped this video would show me something I hadn't seen yet, but its more boring bland nothing.4 minutes to "guard" the scanner and the enemies don't even try to attack the scanner. Why do I need to guard it? The health bars of the enemies bother me. The enemies are bullet sponges and there appears to be no competition or danger of dying. I don't think the guy was playing that well and I never felt like he was going to die. Let me just run in circles and they won't see me. The art style does look like Halo and it is nice looking, but that is the only good thing I can say so far.

It needs to be more to justify the always online features. Some co-op missions isn't enough tbh...

Seriously. If it's just a more outright scifi Borderlands it needs to justify it's online nature because Borderlands does exist. Planetside 2 exist as another option.

I'm liking everything I see about this game. Coming from a fan of Phantasy Star Online, it looks like a fun solo or co-op experience. And having liked Halo multiplayer I'm excited for the PVP. The addition of events also interests me since I'll most likely breeze through the story less than a month after release with my brother (we're both going titan). And I'm sure Bungie will do a good job with the lore. The score, as expected, is top notch too so why did they fire one of the best composers in the industry again? I'm sure others are hesitant of Destiny now with all the attention it's been getting such as Activision funding it 500mil and it being the biggest entertainment release ever topping Avatar and all of that. Like I care. I try to avoid giving in to hype when it comes to games. I just look at the gameplay and if it looks enjoyable I get it. I don't know if it'll revolutionize video games forever but it seems like the kind of game I like at least and that's why I'll be getting it at launch. So to everyone in here make up your own minds about it. It may or may not be for you. I don't think anyone deserves to be treated better or worse based on whether or not they're getting this game. It's just a game after all.

A game that you watch someone else on Youtube or the internet play can be good. It's a whole different beast to be enjoying it with your friends. I've had people tell me Borderlands was crap and this was even on GAF pre-release of the first game. Guess that turned out more than alright.

I really don't understand why Bungie hasn't shown the Last City more. We've seen pics from it and little clips, but that's about it.

They've made such a big deal about social interaction in this game, but they don't show the center piece of it all.

E3 plz.

Most of you saying it's boring must not have friends to play this with. I'll be playing the shit out of this with my two friends making a full Fireteam and we're gonna raid the fuck out of this game. Halo and the like have always been social games but their social extent only went as far as competitive multiplayer. Now you have competitive multiplayer AND loot/armor/weapons/trees/skills/focuses/vehicles/openworld/socialhubs/publicevents/factions/worlds/trading/spaceships/speederbikes/andholyshitthatsalotofcrap.

Borderlands only had half that and it was pretty fun, especially co-op. Most people who are comparing this to Borderlands must have forgotten that it didn't have competitive multiplayer and also didn't have character customization to the nth degree like Destiny has. Also gunplay in Borderlands was like taking the Diablo style of combat and making it first-person, Destiny is pretty different in that it's more Halo-style where each shot counts.

I think most (some?) of you are underestimating how Destiny will be a social experience. I can already see it and I think Bungie can see it but it's hard to convey that without you in front of the controller playing with other human beings. Ever been on an MMO server with just you and a couple other people? Yah, that's pretty fucking boring. They've said time and again that you can play alone but what I read from that is "Well you could but you're not going to want to."

Could Destiny flop? I guess it could but it seems really unlikely given Bungie's pedigree and all the info I've scoured since I heard about this game. It's fine to be hesitant, I just hate the lazy response of "it's generic" without truly understanding what that means and just how stupid it is given what we know and still have yet to see.

Borderlands is an ok game. I finished the first but got bored before I could finish the second one. I would love a game that was diablo with an fps mode. I just think Diablo grabbed me more than Borderlands could. Hopefully the beta will make be a believer.

Your first point is silly, whether you can play with friends is silly. If that is your argument the same thing could be said about any game.

If a game looks uninspired then playing with friends is only prolonging the inevitable. Also I could play other games like ps2 for free what makes destiny special? So far it looks like a 500 million dollars reskinned game.

Seeing a "fetch" quest gave me flashbacks to WoW. Collect 10 boar hearts for some pittance of xp then rinse-repeat.

I really want to like this game as the easy transition from solo to co-op play could have a lot of potential but these videos don't inspire confidence that the rest of the game will be terribly exciting.
