Dragon's Crown |OT| Knock down the crown

So I just bought this game to play with my two brothers co-op on our Vitas.

Am I reading the OT right that you have to play through every damn level in the game before playing Co-op? What the fuck is this bullshit?

Not quite. You have to play through all of the A paths. All of the B paths still remain. (Plus once you do it on 1 character, you can start at that point w/ all future characters since the 1.04 patch or so).

Not to mention the game really starts on Hard and especially Infernal; Normal is a cakewalk. Not a design I'm particularly happy with, but it's there.

Gonna work on getting my fighter to level 130, same as my elf, and then I think I'm done. Game is still fun when in a party, but is getting a tad repetitive now. Plus I'm getting a bit hooked on El Sword Online :)

Guys i have finished the story and rebuild the first angle statue.
To rebuild the second one i have collected all the stones and killed the dragon second time. But nothing happened. is it because i played the second time in easy mode?
i am playing it on the vita. Level 33 now with amazon.

Aye. You kill the dragon the first time, you restore one statue and unlock a new difficulty (hard). Then you finish on hard, restore the second statue and unlock Infernal. Do it again on infernal and you'll restore the third statue (and unlock Ultimate).
Note that on new difficulties you can go straight to the B routes if you want.

So, keep playing at the new difficulties. You're just at the surface of the game :)

I feel guilty getting this for free, but as NIS apparently had no intention of including it in a sale in the EU I had no choice. :(

Had a quick go this morning. a few questions:

  1. Can I reset skill points?
  2. Can I grab *every* skill point in the game?
  3. Is there an efficient way of scouring the scenery for goodies? Dragging the cursor with the right stick works, but using the touch screen didn't (which is a shame, because that's quite a bit easier to cover).
Started with the Amazon (what is with that walking animation?), but I may very well swap to another character. They're listed as "expert" characters, but are the ranged characters (elf/sorceress) difficult to play?

Thanks.

1 - Yes. Later in the game you can get respec potions (Amnesia Potion). The earliest would be on Hard after beating the first three floors of the Labyrinth of Chaos.
Note that points invested in Deep Pockets won't be recovered by respec'ing, tho.

2 - No.

3 - The touch didn't work? I always just swiped my finger across the screen to search for goodies. I'll try doing it later in the day, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

To oversimplify it, the Elf and Sorc (and Wizard) have manageable resources (arrows and MP), so they take some more time to use efficiently. But that's that.
A tip if you want to try them all: after you beat the game on Normal, you can start new characters (on the same save slot - you can create and change them at the tavern) straight at lvl 15 and half on the story quests done, so try to finish it with one character instead of trying them at the start.

Thanks. I tried swiping around the screen but didn't discover anything - maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. I'll have another go later.

Thanks for the tip on the other characters as well. I do intend to stick with one character, I'm just not sure the Amazon is the one I want to go through first. I'm early enough that I can start over anyway. :)

Is it possible to screw yourself over with a build? I didn't intend on reading any build guides if I can avoid it, but I will if it will save me trouble later on.

Not really. A bad build can give you some hard time on Infernal difficulty, but by then you'll be able to get at least 2 amnesia potions (I don't remember if they're farmable on the Labyrinth of Chaos, but I know they are on the Ultimate endgame dungeon).

So after clicking/tapping like a mofo I've realised I can't touch the runes until I've completed a quest. D:

All I now need to know, is whether Rannie at any point says "ding DONG". Because if not, it seems like a missed opportunity. :(

EDIT: Do the goods/coins Rannie picks up get attributed to me or are they lost?

My advice? Pick what seems cool. There are multiple reasons that you can't really screw yourself over; first, this being a beat'em up, good play is more important than stats. Second is that the first tiers of everything are super cheap so they give good bang for your buck (you should probably pick the first tier of pretty much anything anyway); by the time you reach the truly expensive tiers (five skill points per tier and such) you'll know each ability enough to know what you like and what you don't. I have well over ten Amnesia Potions (all my characters are at least on Hard and most on Infernal) and haven't used one yet (and I allocated all skill points by ear). Still, you can also use this skill calculator if you want:
http://fruitriin.sakura.ne.jp/DrgnsCrwnSS/eng/

My other piece of advice is, try all characters, or at the very least a melee fighter, a caster (I recommend the witch, she's ridiculously fun to play as) and the elf; i.e. the three most different play styles. Also, the Amazon pretty much plays horribly until you grab the first point of the Punisher skill, then it becomes a blender of death. This skill makes you hit twice per each strike in your basic combo, making you reach berserker much more easily. Unfortunately you need to reach level 10 with her, so if you're still low level, it would benefit you to play another character, then when you hit 15 and the second set of dungeons, make a level 15 Amazon straightaway.

Anything else you need help with, feel free to ask; we've not had a lot of activity lately, so any is welcome! :)

Thanks! Definitely going to try all styles, although I did change over from the Amazon to the fighter and start over. Elf/sorceress were my preferred picks anyway, so I'll definitely pick those up. ^_^

EDIT: Also need to try and understand the AI companions a bit more. I have the first dude (Alfonse) and I tried burying the others for items, but didn't get anything.

I personally dislike playing with AI companions; I always fight alone or with people. Burying has a small chance of producing an item (nothing particularly useful anyway; consumables and pieces of equipment that can't be repaired), it's really more of a way of disposing of the bones without having to pay. Needless to say I bury all bones I find. :D

You can disable AI companions from jumping in from the options menu (this won't disable online players from joining your game if you play online). You can also disable individual party slots from allowing jump-in from both AI or online players from the tavern. I have AI jump-in disabled, and slots enabled for when I play with friends.

I think I might follow your lead on that, if anything I found it more confusing anyway.

I doubt it. It sold record amounts for Vanillaware and was very profitable but not a runaway success that would warrant a remake.
I'd be fine with a port without any framerate issues. Put it up on PS+.

I had thought for a while there that was actually happening, but I guess I confused it with the Vita version.

I can't work out if Rannie is a help or a hindrance. Even smacking isn't much help for what he steals, as he throws out a bomb for your troubles. :(

I've seen it mentioned that you can chain quests (i.e. do multiples before heading back to town) - is this something I need to unlock?

The one who steals your stuff (and leaves a bomb) is not Rannie, that's Tommit (you can check his name by tapping on him via touchscreen). Tommit is a mofo. Rannie is a nice guy :)

I think you can start chaining dungeons after you beat the first 9 bosses (maybe a little earlier?), which is when you onlock online too.

It's exactly after you beat the ninth boss, indeed (first time you complete the forest). You unlock online, dungeon chaining and the cooking minigame.

Ah, I see. Well in that case I'm going to eat the bomb and murder that thieving mofo at every given opportunity.

The different-colored thieves that are not Rannie are actually a throwback to Golden Axe's little thieves, :) they even function likewise in the sense that you can actually beat more treasure out of them than they take (in fact, you can defeat them before they take anything and they'll drop stuff).

Picked this up on Vita through PS+ and enjoying it so far. I've tried connecting online but haven't been successful yet. Some quick searches online showed people complaining about the servers and connections last year. Has anybody had issues recently?

Nice. I seem to have been playing this in poor (for Vita) light conditions so they all look the same to me as things are blowing up. I'm just waving my sword at everything that moves to be on the safe side.

Managed to have more success with the online today, but it seems to get unstable if you jump to the Vita OS and return. Quitting the game and launching again seems to fix it.

The connection has gotten far worse recently due to the amount of traffic Elsword is getting.

The game will drop your connection if you press the PS button. Some games to that.
Makes sense, since the game (which doesn't allows you to pause) pauses completely when doing so. On the PS3 it still runs on the background, so there's no such issue.

On the subject of Rannie, what's the benefit of collecting the treasure instead of letting him do it? Is it for things like the wealth to health skill? I am habitually trying to pick it all up before him but not sure if there's a point.

Wealth to Health and also it's plain faster. Waiting for him to pick up every single coin can be quite long. There's also equipment in Ultimate's infinite dungeon that can trigger effects like homing fireballs on coin pickup.

Not bad so far, good hour or so in, just out of tutorial stage. Thought I'd get cracking with the Sorceress (just over the Elf) for the challenge. Reminds me a lot of D&D Tower of Doom / Shadow Over Mystera (hence why I brought it)

Huh, so I just finished the game. A lot shorter than I expected, though I have the other classes to play. I also found an item which said something about a
Chaos Labyrinth
? Never really felt like it took off at any point.

EDIT: Oh, and essentially NG+ it seems.

Aye, you're supposed to beat the three difficulties to "finish" the game as
the statues of the other two goddess get repaired after beating Hard and Infernal
.

The Labirynth is the old endgame dungeon. It has 99 floors (you can access floors 1-3 after beating normal, 4-6 after beating hard and 7-99 after beating infernal), each with 3 stages.

After you beat the game on Infernal, you unlock Ultimate, which have another endgame Dungeon (Tower of Mirages, which has 10.000 floors, but each with only one stage) and where the regular 9 stages all have lvl 255 enemies.

You can sink quite some time in this game. I'm 160 hours in having three characters who barely scratched Ultimate. Planning on going back now that there's a new generation of players :)

That's a scary amount of time to commit to a game.

I thought
Medusa
was an end boss but, when it became obvious I was going to die, I realised I could actually continue on. Then I died shortly after. :/

She is an end boss. You can "quit" some of the bosses, but you don't get the item you are there for as a result.

Ah OK. :)

I didn't intentionally quit, I was evading and the next thing I know I've gone through the other end of the arena. :p

I don't know why I'm struggling with her, it seems like it should be easy enough although I feel there's some blocking/evasion tactics I could improve with.

As in don't focus on them? That I understand, but getting locked in their embrace is a pain for positioning when she's doing her thing. :/

I'll give it another go later/tomorrow. :)

One other thing - now that I have the ability to chain quests (and do the cooking mini-game). Is it possible to choose my subsequent destination or do they automatically follow on in story mode order?

They follow the same order as on the level select ring (which isn't the same as story mode order of appearance). I used to have that order memorized, but I haven't played in a while.

You might be underlevelled, what level are you? Otherwise I found Medusa to be the easiest tier 2 boss except for the chimera. Try to stay on the air and remember to look away from her when she opens her eyes to avoid the massively damaging petrification.

Chain as much as you can with an XP prayer. You can gain double digit levels this way.

Ignore the snakes. Become mobile enough to dodge them all. I mean, if you are landing anyway, then sure, kill one. Nothing more than that.

Yeah, definitely chain tier 1 paths for levels. You can also chain a few easy dungeons then tackle a hard one using the lives and bonuses from the chain. You keep everything even if you're killed.
Also, red snakes (and scorpions) can be insta-killed by performing a slide or trampling them with mounts (dash). Don't remember if medusa spawns red ones, though.

Level 20 I think, so I should be OK. As I say, it doesn't seem like it should be that hard (evade facing me back towards her can be a killer though) but I keep failing. I've been spending as much time as possible in the air, but my air combos don't seem to do a great deal of damage (fighter) - certainly not in comparison to my ground based combos.

I've put one point into extending aerial attacks I think, other than that a lot of my points have gone into score/survivability talents.

Will try and have a go at lunch, although I do have a lot of E3 videos to keep up with.

EDIT: Also, by tier 1 do you mean the route A stuff?
