When he talked about how previously the hardware was so weak creating true open world was impossible......the mountain in the distance ..this became such an obvious thing in recent years that I never once stopped to think Wii was just to weak to do this kind of stuff.

It's like baby's first open world game ;)

Looks nice though. Glad they went for cartoonish style.

Okay, but why not have Link be a girl? They can still be like past Links, but just as a girl. There's no good reason not to, especially with this reincarnated character.

There's been no good reason why people are so averse to Link being a girl. No one has provided any good reasons beyond "that's just the way it's been!"
Zelda fans don't want ANYTHING to change.

Unfortunately, Nintendo obliges them for the most part. The series needs a complete reboot from the ground up.

There's also no good reason why people are so averse to Link -as pictured above- being a boy.

Nobody is averse to it what are you even saying

People are averse to this attitude that Link MUST be male when the only reasons given are "bc I want him to be" (spoken by males, I'm sure) or because "it's part of this voiceless character's identity, whose entire schtick has always been that he's a blank slate representing the player, that he MUST be male", lacking any semblance of critical thinking

I love androgynous Link. It's really interesting that Nintendo keeps making him more and more the opposite of what the bald space marine crowd would want.

Amazing art style.

It's a blue tunic he gets them in several of the games so not sure why the complaining. Maybe this video is way into the game when he gets it or he starts with it.

Wait, the press-kit images are 1080p? I don't believe the Wii U can reach such fidelity at 1080p. Bullshoots confirmed? :/

Xenoblade Chronicles has pulled it off on the Wii

i'm hoping link is female and they lean in harder on the cel shading so i can drink the glorious tears and bathe in the amazing salt

Similarly when it turns out Link is yet again a boy, I'm looking forward to the inevitable tears and crying over sexism in games over this issue.

Xenoblade would like to have a word with you. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if Monolith shared some tech with the Zelda team.

Link's clearly a boy in the trailer, this discussion is amusing.

I'm still loving how it looks, can I dream of 1080p/60fps?

I've been playing WWHD and I think I'd be fine with 1080p/30fps but damn.

The design looks incredible regardless of gender, effeminate or otherwise. Nintendo has really outdone themselves with the visual style of this game. The effects in that trailer are super impressive too, the game really dumps on that tech demo from a few years ago.

Can't wait for Super Maria Galaxy. Or the newest Metroid featuring Sam and his awesome pecs showing through the Zero Suit.

Really digging the new look for Link. Can't wait to hear more about this game, better yet can't wait to put the disc in and pick up the controller.

I don't think this is going to happen. People are pretty used to Link being male, so him still being male won't cause too much of an uproar.

edit: ugh i just noticed his ponytail I am IN LOVE

HOLY BALLS!! ELDER SCROLLS: HYRULE!! That looked insanely good!
If only Wii-U was easily available here in India, no official Nintendo support

Is that even Link? I thought blue was Zelda's colour?
Gender-swapped protags would be cool and something people have been wanting
Also, would show confidence in mixing it up unlike the homogenized industry

I respectfully disagree. Lore wise, yes, it's different Links, but branding wise Link is Link. He's a male, he has green clothes at one point or another, and he has a sword. If I show someone a picture of Link, it will be a guy (probably) wearing green clothes who has a sword.

But there is nothing that dictates his character has to be a male for any specific reason. A girl can have green clothes, and a sword. And even playing along with your argument, this version of Link doesn't appear to even have a sword, or green clothes. Nintendo doesn't really seem to stick to a strict guideline for "Link", as the character has been pretty much constantly changing throughout the 3D games in the series. I don't see why Link being a female would be any different.

I'd say it's probably more realistic we'd get either 1080/30 or 720/60. Based on how nice Mario Kart looks i'd be fine with 720/60. If anyone can pull off squeezing 1080/60 from the Wii U though it'd be a Nintendo first party game.

Link just looks like a 13/14 year old boy to me, not sure why some people are so convinced he's a girl. And if he is a girl, I don't see why it would matter - but they would probably try and make Link look less ambiguous if they were going to make him a girl this time...give Link longer hair or something. I'm almost certain he's still a guy.

Anyway, I'm too busy thinking about how insane open-world Zelda is going to be with hills in the distance you can walk all the way over to. I hope the world is filled with secrets. Such an exciting idea.

I don't know. The hair is noticeably different, especially the length of certain parts, and the face overall, especially once he/she lets the arrow fly, just outright looks like a girl.

Oh, I suppose I wasn't clear in that post, but I agree completely. My point was that this Link (if it is Link) is actually a rather large departure from the previous designs.

Wait, Link isn't real? -_-

Of course they can do whatever they want. It seems to pretty much boil down to some people seeing the Zelda franchise as Skyrim like avatars that are completely customizable, and some seeing them as actual characters.

I guess I see them as characters.

Again, they do can do whatever because it's a new "world" everytime, but I would personally annoyed if:

- Ganon was a light skinned, short, fat blond, girl who didn't use a sword.
- Zelda was boy who looked nothing like previous Zeldas
- Impa was some big dude sterotypical dunce bodyguard or something

They're different characters or reincarnations everytime so technically all of these are "okay".

It'd still annoy me though.

The characters could have those new traits and still be true to their past incarnations.

If all Link needs to be is dressed in green, a boy and carry a sword, what if he's turned into a murderer who doesn't go on any adventures whatsoever? Would that be more true to Link than a Link just as courageous and adventurous as past Links, but who's a girl?

The criteria some people have for what constitutes "Link" is simply bogus and superficial. It's fine for you to be annoyed by changes, but that doesn't make your annoyance meaningful.

Art style may have changed, but all of these Link's are still males who wear green clothes (outside of the OOT one, and we all know he wears green in that) with swords. Art style may have changed, but the traits that make Link Link didn't. It's because of these that they can switch around the art and we can immediately look at Link and say "yep, that's Link".

Where do you draw the line then? Why is a complete art style shift with Wind Waker acceptable, but not a girl Link? What about a girl Link prevents the game from being a Zelda game?

And how does the character's sex change any of this? If the trailer Link was later revealed to be a flat-chested girl, people still will have thought "that must be Link" when seeing it the first time.

This started when people started saying Link being a girl would annoy or bother them. No one has said they're averse to Link being a boy.

You admit there's no good reason to be averse to Link being a girl though, so that's a start.

Why isn't "That's just the way it's been!" a good reason? I feel like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall here, but to me, Link is a guy because for the past 28 years he's been a guy. Yes, his sexuality may not necessarily matter and at the end of the day it's as important as the color he wears (not very), but it's still something that, for me, makes Link immediately recognizable as Link.
