Amiibo Packaging (Nintendo Figurine) - Wallets 'am cry

While I could see the figures sporting different features across multiple games, they could easily justify the purchase of the toys with a remake of Mario Bros (game for free) where you play through as the toy you are using. (i.e. similar to that flash game from a couple years back)

I'm surprised to see Wii Fit Trainer and Villager in this first batch. I mean, I like both of those characters so I'm glad they're included, but given that these are supposed to work with many different games, they seem like odd choices. Though I do wonder if compatible games will tend to use the figures for things that don't necessarily corrospond to the character themself as much as them unlocking or adding a specific thing for that figure. As for the Smash branding, I wonder if we'll see alternate versions of some characters that act exactly the same but just look different.

I'll definitely be picking up a few, in any case.

I'm still not clear as to how these work, from what I understood during the direct, could it be possible that a character who wasn't originally in Smash Bros who has a figurine released could be potentially be transferred into the game?, like say I have a Daisy figurine I could play as her in Smash Bros?

I'll probably end up buying all of them. >.>

Interested to see what cross-game features it does, i.e. if you level up in one game how it affects the other.

I can't wait to start with 250 missiles and 1500 energy in the next Metroid after leveling up my Samus figure. :p
Will buy Shulk figure

He's all but confirmed; there was a Rhythm Heaven enemy in Smash Run, basically conforming that particular leak.

What horrible, wasteful and space-inefficient packaging!

Also, amiibo will be confusing as fuck to the end consumer. They are already people out there who are confused about the Smash Bros. integration, and think that you'll need to buy a character's figure to unlock it in the game. Since it's exactly how Skylanders and Disney Infinity worked, it's not a farfetched misconception.

Good luck marketing this stuff Nintendo, you already have troubles making people understand that the Wii U is not just a Gamepad addon to the Wii, I can't see how you can possibly not fuckup this as well.

I'm honestly curious how people see these in terms of stuff like DLC and microtransactiona that so many rail against. I mean, is the simple novelty of what is likely a cheap plastic toy really that much of a differentiating feature?

To be fair... it MIGHT unlock them if you have the figure and haven't in-game unlocked a character yet. I don't think we have confirmation on that point.

Wonder if Sonic, Mega Man and Pac-man will have Amiibo figures?

I really hope the quality of these early show models remains in the mass produced versions. They look great!

Also people seem to get confused about Amiibo, the cool thing is that it's not required to enjoy anything extra in Smash at all. The figures just your personal character with jacked up stats. None of this "LOL WANNA PLAY AS LUIGI?? TOO BAD GONNA HAVE TO BUY THE LUIGI FIGURE"

it isn't DLC. This has NO effect on the game unless you think training against AI is going to make you a better player.

From what they've explained, they're not being used for DLC or micro-transactions. That might change, but it isn't the case so far.

Well you're essentially paying for a computer controlled character... Not exactly game changing.

And in terms of the figure making a difference, it does. These are characters people have close relationships with and this is the first time for many that these characters will be available in a physical form. It also adds to the sentimentality of them being a training/fighting buddy

Will buy if it unlocks characters like Link/Samus/Kirby in Mario Kart....won't if it's just for Smash Bros style character evolving.

That makes their usefulness seem sorta shallow. Maybe that's what they are going for but I wonder how that will affect their ability to really take off if they don't do all that much.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't let amiibo be tainted by the $ = £/€ curse ;_;

Just like Skylanders I guess.

I cancelled the Smash Bros 3DS preorder right after the Digital Event. Not gonna pay that much for the figurines unless they announce you can store everything in a single one.

Unlike competing figure-based ecosystems, Nintendo seems to be aiming more at them being adding persistent cross-game features rather than being a "one figure = one DLC character" kind of deal.

For Smash Bros. they've already mentioned that one part of the amiibo integration will be RPG-like persistent stats for a amiibo-specific mode. All characters remain playable in the non-amiibo game modes, so it doesn't feel like a greedy/evil disc-locked DLC cashgrab, just an extra optional feature.

Of course only time will tell if they can really pull off something really interesting out of it.

For 10-15 bucks I hope they can be used cross-game, so if I buy a Mario figure for Smash I can use him in Mario Kart, Mario Party etc. Nintendo didn't expressly say that was possible but they did hint at it.

Yeah it's called options. You get a quality Nintendo figurine that also has a purpose in game but not to the point where its gamebreaking. Nintendo fans will eat this up.

About them not being able to take off, when has that ever stopped Nintendo?

...I'm sure Smash is still going to be a great game even if you don't buy any Amiibos

The problem I'm imagining is that if there's an amiibo for every Smash character, that'll be ~50 figurines. Even at £5 a figurine, it'd cost you £250 to get everything, up to £750 if they're £15 each. And I'd want them all.

How am I supposed to choose which figurine to buy?!

Noticed that all of these are "Smash" branded figures. So, they're part of a Smash line.

That means that there will probably be separate lines for the other games, ie a figure of Mario in a racecar, etc.

Im curious to see what say, a Kirby figure would do in Mario Kart, or what a "Mario Kart" figure would do in Smash.

lol This is like declining a meal at a fancy restaurant because they serve Ice Cream and not cake.

The game is fully playable without a single amiibo figure. The only extra bonus is that you have a "RPG-like" character that you can level and battle and raise up.

Well, I would assume you would choose the character with the most cross-game capability. Buying Link is great, but he'll be useless in Mario Party 8, Mario Kart 8, and Captain Toad.

Have they given an estimated release timeframe, and is there a full list of ones that will be available at launch? I've read there's 32 or so, but I've only seen the photos of 10.

Man, we can now have an action figure of the Wii Fit Trainer.

What an amazing universe we live in. Next you're going to tell me the U.S. has a black president.

I didn't think about it like that. It'd be strange only being able to use Mega Man in Smash but Yoshi in Mario Kart, Mario Party, Yoshi's Wooly World etc.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Imagine if they had launched these WITH the Wii U. Maybe things would be a lot different.

I might buy some for my mains (Kirby, Zelda, Samus), but no way can I afford the whole collection. My wife would be furious.

I don't understand why they have the Smash logo on their base if they're supposed to work in other games.

Because the first series is thematically tied to Smash Bros... That is, all of the first batch are based on Smash Brothers models... future ones will likely be based off of other game models and thus have a different base.

So someone considering buying a Nintendo console will have to buy the console £ 210, the game £ 40 and 16 x £ 15 for these characters to get them unlocked in that game ?

Great for Nintendo I see this as a way to earn more money out of existing customers.

Potential new customers or sitting n the fence for a wiiu may be put of by the very high cost of wanting all the unlocks in a game.

For me to get smash bros and all characters would cost £ 250 + £ 16 x 15 = £ 490.

Really ? Just see this as Nintendo go more niche / existing fan base
You don't need the figures to unlock anything. All characters are unlocked in-game and the figures are to save player data to use across other consoles or your own, to play against with.

*******

At the moment I agree that the use is relatively shallow. Outside their current plans, they need to release a free to play (or something) adventure game do that the figures can be used ala Skylanders and you swapping them to swap characters in-game. Otherwise this will just be some really pretty memory cards.
