Amiibo Packaging (Nintendo Figurine) - Wallets 'am cry

Mario Kart 8 future patch to allow these as characters? I'd be down for that.

I hope these don't turn into the typical Nintendo accessory that they support with 1 game and then abandon.

My MtG days put me off rarities, but at the same time I can't see them manufacturing as many Rosalinas as they do Marios. I just hope something with a $9.99 MSRP doesn't cost me $60 on Ebay.

I don't mind certain characters being less produced, as long as they're not fucking impossible to find for all eternity. As long as they eventually become easy to find, I'd be happy with that.

I just hope these things can be scanned through the packaging because I can see myself buying two of each otherwise. And I've never been one of those DON'T OPEN IT people.

So you're saying this will be a huge success for Nintendo and that it could possibly be the key to making the Wii U a minor success rather than a failure?

I think even people who don't own Wii U's will be buying these as collectibles. It's a good move on Nintendo's part either way.

I think people are thinking these will be limited to games that make sense... but what if the ones that don't (Kid Icarus in MK8 for instane) unlocks OTHER things like customizing options for karts or decals?

Not everything has to be character related.

An interesting thought: Anyone have any clue how much data these figures store? Or the average amount of data NFC usually store?

Release a The Wonderful 101 series of these Nintendo. Please.

The seven core Wonderfuls, Immorta, Vorkken, Chewgi, Nelson. I want them.

Game wise I doubt I'd have any use for these going off the info we have so far. Unless I'm missing something these will be about as popular as those 3DS AR cards. Something you pull out once or twice, show off to your friends then never use again.

Collectible wise I'd consider grabbing some if they dipped into interesting or obscure characters that don't get any Nintendo merchandising love. I'd love to have a shelf full of Punch out characters or classic Mario bosses.

Depending on the distance for NFC, you may not even need to take them out of the box!

Skylanders works out of the box (what a pun). Tested that on a demo unit when I was bored while waiting for MK8 to be readied up for sale :p

EDIT: Greninja'd (So much pun)

Don't the demo kiosks for the existing brands let you scan them from inside the packaging?

They do indeed.

Yep.

There is nothing about the NFC chips that says they need to be in contact, it's all up to Nintendo and their design of the Wii U pad and the amiibos they designed. They SHOULD be able to, and they probably WILL, but we won't know for sure till we see them in action.

So happy to hear that they might work while still in packaging!

It would be weird bringing your boxed up Pikachu to a friend's house though.

Those 15$ will probably be translated to 15€ ($20). Depending on the shipping cost I may import the figures instead of buying them here.

For every 3 you buy here you could buy 4 in the US.

Really hope they do
Ike
ZS Samus
HW Link
HW Zelda
Lucina
And a Midna just for the hell of it.

They need to be more like Skylanders huge selection than infinity's horrible selection.

Man, we can now have an action figure of the Wii Fit Trainer.

What an amazing universe we live in. Next you're going to tell me the U.S. has a black president.

You know, for those that want to keep them sealed, it shouldn't pose a problem; Disney Infinity figures and Skylanders work on their bases even if they are in their packaging.

Knowing Nintendo, they are probably gonna be region-lcoked. I mean, e-Reader cards were. Hell, the fucking GamePad itself is a region-locked controller!

Oh, thank CHRIST they aren't blind-bagged.

This. Was really scared they would do that.

If they are smart, they will go a bit cheaper than Skylanders/ Disney. The original Skylanders were $9 and while it was a bit much, it didn't feel ridiculous. At this point with dozens of figures, $10 for the cheapest Skylanders seems over the top.

That'd be pretty stupid and I'd kind of doubt it. I doubt people would save money by importing, and I think it'd just be cheaper to mass-produce the figures for all regions instead of individually region locking them.

Gonna buy as many as I can. I hope they don't do the whole artificial scarcity bs for certain figures that other companies do to manipulate people.

They need region-specific packaging regardless, and it's not like it would cost them anything substantial extra by region-locking them as well. I'm just saying anything's possible.

Lol that's not stupid that's money.

Nah, it'd be kind of stupid. Part of Skylanders and Disney Infinity's success is that the figures are usable across multiple games. I don't think every figure should work with every game, but they should at least work with some other games. I'm sure they will though.

I think I'll be disciplined enough only to buy like five.

My Kryptonite would be an Amiibo JRPG, where the figurines decide my party. Then I'd go for broke.

So these launch the same day as Smash for Wii U, right? That will be an expensive day for me (SSB4, Gamecube Controller Adapter+Marth). Hope they release Ness in the future, I'd love to have an Earthbound figure.

In the Japanese financial presentation I believe they already stated the Amiibo figures would transfer data between multiple kinds of games. One figure, many applications.

I'm wanting a Little Mac attack. And more characters in Mario Kart? Hell yes. I just hope it's more Mario universe characters like Wiggler, MagiKoopa, King Boo and Petey.

Nintendo know they're going to sell gazillions of these figures regardless of how practically useful they prove to be. I'd buy a bunch just to sit on a shelf.
