Xbox One July monthly OS update detailed

Personally I want them to move friends & party stuff into the OS. I find it all so painfully slow launching apps when you have a game running, most frustrating.

"Move <x> into the OS" doesn't even make sense with the way the XB1's OS is structured. The Friends app is just as much a part of the OS as the dash (which is just another app running on top of the Win8 core that the app partition runs, much like Explorer is on traditional Windows).

What they need to do is make the Friends app permanently resident and auto-started at boot, so there's never any delay getting to it, in the same way that the dash is always there ready to be used instantly.

As a side note, this Brazil Now app while watching the Mexico Cameroon match is super slick.

Sorry for the shitty phone picture

Yeah I had it running yesterday, it works great. The only problem is that the notification is about one minute late on the action. A bit late to switch channels with the hope of seeing a replay.
Anyway, I got my own instant notifications by hearing the shouts out of the pub down the street from my open windows. But at least now I'll know 60 seconds later who they were cheering. :p

Yup, it shouldn't be too hard to have the system launch the last four apps as background tasks at startup, since those are more likely to be called by the user.

The fact of the matter is that, yes there are a ton of improvements that still need to be made. A lot of the fixes over the last few updates are things that we didn't even know we wanted before they were made. Reorganization of the store was store increased visability but was not necessary. Some of the stuff like streaming to Twitch and the great Twitch app should have been ready at launch. You'd have to be a troll to think that MS hasn't been doing a stellar job at the updates though.

They used to with PS3 but people complained remember? I can understand though since you couldn't do anything else during the update and they took forever sometimes.

With PS4 this is no longer the case so i don't think anyone would mind.

People complained last gen because of the size, speed, and frequency. Also a lot of the updates were "various fixes." MS has been transparent and the update process is largely invisible to me. I literally don't even realize my system has been updated until I turn it on. I don't know if it's because I'm part of the early beta testers or something, but the last two updates were done without me ever knowing.

I don't know how I feel about your presumptions but here's a long list (most are not detrimental and frankly ridiculous at this stage of the cycle) of features that should be implemented. To highlight a few important ones: BG Music Player, Universal Kinect voice support for all apps.

lol. quite contrary. I understand that most of the delays are because of the extensive amount of testing that needs to take place before they can deploy the updates. But is that really an excuse to not have these features in place on day 0?

You answered your own question, time, testing system stability, but mostly time. But what you should note, x1 is evolving rapidly, more so than any other console.

No popular piece of software is ever finished, and expecting everything day one is an unreasonable expectation.

Next big thing would like is plex app though

Frequent updates are fine, its the fact that they take absolutely ages (as you said) which was the problem. Doing them in the background (on XB1 anyway dunno what PS4 is like) means sometimes you can get an update and not even realise it...

Yes that was my point. Both consoles do updates in the background so the PS3 complainants about too many updates wouldn't matter anymore with PS4.

I'm not 100% sure on the mechanics but fundamentally if they can get rid of loading time and stop it being so slow to open then I'm happy... I thought the main dashboard was a special case; however it's done can they move the "friends app" functionality into it please :)

Like on gameclips is cool, but they need some extra social features too like comments, re-share and better activity feed... But it's a start!

I think the problem is the "friends" screen still needs to refresh your friends status (whether they are playing a game or watching a movie), so that will still cause a delay. Maybe they should create a background tasks that downloads all of your friends statuses every minute or two, so when you pull it up in a game it just uses your cache instead of getting live data.

Snap feature or just "going home" while in a game and going to another app? The only things I find slow is initially getting into a party via the snap feature. And friends. Then again I have a shitload of friends.

The scenario of starting a party and adding a friend to it, once a game is running. Too slow:)

I'm becoming far too predictable.

But seriously, where's the "xbox, screenshot" feature? They teased it last month and now it's nowhere to be seen.

You're pissing off the cat, MS.
Yeah I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been implemented yet, I was expecting some sort of burst mode like the Nokia camera app on my phone.

Choice of Spoken Language. Folks in New Zealand, Ireland and Austria can now enable voice control using the English or German voice models from other countries. And if you're an expat in an English-speaking country, you, too, can choose any of the other English language models that fit you.

Does this exist already in Canada? Because I've had nothing but trouble with my Kinect and my accent.

I'm really loving these updates. I find myself fiddling with the OS with Twitch snapped more than playing games sometimes.

Snap achievements looked awesome. TrueAchievements does the counting on those "do X 200 times" types of achievements but you have to update on the site to get updated information. This is done right then and there, which is fantastic. As an achievement fan, most looking forward to that feature next update.

I'm still waiting on my cobgratulatory PM.
Maybe scroll up and look up my other post? But here, I'll give you another one. How about fixing the mess that is the frontend user interface? Tell me, how do you like sorting out your pins? It's a mess.

Pretty easy actually. Load up Smartglass on PC/Smartphone and voila. Takes like literally 30 seconds.

When Sony did it last generation, most of them were stability updates that didn't add new features. They were different to what Microsoft is doing.

They also often took ages to load. Same with game updates relative to their Xbox 360 counterparts.

Only MS had the ability to deploy proper "patches" as I understand it. If you did it right, you could deploy a patch the size of the code you updated, whereas with Sony's system you had to replace an entire executable if a small update was made to it.

Sony has really improved that concept this gen. But it was a legit complaint last gen. I'd regularly not turn my PS3 on for a while, go to play a game, and end up not playing it because I got distracted by numerous slow update processes.

I really hope the boot to TV stuff is hidden in the settings for this update, will make things so much easier.

Also I'm sure they'll migrate a tone of the voice stuff to smartglass, record that, join party and take screen shot etc. it will actually be easier than dropping to menus to do.

They really should start turning the Upload Studio into a social network of sorts. Comments, shares and better sorting would all be very welcome along with the likes. Give us screenshots with better control of how long we record and we would have something here.

I really want them to allow people to post status updates into the Activity Feed. I think if done right, It could pretty much kill the MTAF which happens on a daily basis.

there were definitely a lot of firmware updates on ps3 but the problem is a lot of them didn't do anything obvious. that's where the complaints come in. if every update actually did something substantial to improve the experience it wouldn't be a problem.

there were always a few threads where someone dusted off their ps3 to play a new game online but had to wait first to install the many firmware updates that had accumulated.

there's a reason people always joked about "improved system stability" or printer support, or a clock fix...too many fluff firmware updates.

Are these just examples, and can anyone chose any language now, or are these specific options for these specific countries the only ones available?

Sounds like you can only change accents/dialects for your current region, not the actual language. I think the bigger language complaint is with games and not voice recognition anyway

Great effort by MS to put out these updates monthly. In the meantime, they should work on a major update to bring the OS to exactly like the 360 with the guidebutton shields, beacons, avatars, and windows, but in general the layout.

I think a better idea would be to integrate GameDVR/Upload/Upload Studio into a single app. I don't think many people even realize that GameDVR is a thing. I don't even understand why upload exists as a separate app other than to push the file to one drive.

BG music I'll give you. as that's current the most ridiculous flaw in the OS imo. Universal Kinect support for all apps, is kinda on the creators of said apps though, rather than MS.

I'd like to be able to rearrange (and resize) pins freely, more like how things are on Windows 8 and Windows Phone, but when I compare the current implementation to what the PS4 is doing with my games and apps, I find it hard to beat MS over the head too badly for the current implementation.

Linking to a list containing primarily new feature requests (many that aren't even in MS' hands such as "I would love to see Spotify app on Xbox.") was an extermely weak justification of your point that "There's a lot that needs fixing" though. Right now MS has what I'd consider to most complete OS out of all current gen consoles (and last gen it wasn't even worth comparing). Despite this, they are also pushing out improvements at a far quicker rate than their competition. Downplaying it as there simply being a lot to fix is pretty insincere when you consider that they competition currently has more to fix, and are taking much longer to do so.

I am seriously jealous of how often X1 is getting updates. Good job, MS. I'll buy one once we get closer to Platinum Game's new title.

I honestly think the system needs an overall stability update. I feel like every other time I turn the system on, I need to dump the cache to get the OS to be snappy again. I love all the features they keep adding every month, but Its a pain when games will crash on start up, and certain apps take ages to load..

Update sounds great. I'm ready for screenshot and preloading updates! Hopefully by Horizon 2 or Sunset we'll have preloading available

They need to do that also. Having such a schizophrenic approach to content sharing is baffling.

Really? I think that's definitely reaching and if they're designing their UI with that in mind then that's a major misstep.

I think it's pretty likely that at least one person in a household with an Xbox One owns a smartphone that supports Smartglass. That's not much good though when you consider that each individual user will have their own home screen, and so having to borrow the smartphone (if the owner is even around) isn't really something you can expect them to do. Hell, I don't even want to use my own smartphone for this usually. If I'm already in front of the console, I should be able to just reorder stuff easily on the console itself.

You honestly believe there's a huge percentage of people that own a next-gen console but not a iOS/Android/Windows phone? I'm sure there are some, but they gotta be far and few between.
