OG Xbox Appreciation and Lack of Emulation Thread of the big black box of doom

Interesting. That's not really what I meant, but it could indicate that a different signal type is reaching your TV (and being processed differently, etc).

If you're looking for differences in image clarity, you're not going to find much by looking at static images. Interlaced signals are usually put through a slight blurry "flicker filter"; this is to cut down on high-frequency details that could cause flicker if the signal is displayed back on a natively interlaced display. Aside from this difference in filtering, for scenes that aren't in motion, an interlaced image and a progressive image should look identical. If you aren't moving around and doing things, you might be able to spot that the interlaced image is a bit softer (depending on what you're sensitive to), but they won't likely look much different.
You're going to want to compare cases with significant on-screen movement.

The best test would be if you could find a spot where a character is locked into a glitchy twitchy movement where they jump back and forth between two locations/orientations between frames; interlaced signals have a horrible time with that sort of thing, even in 60fps games, and your TV would likely look very different in a progressive case versus an interlaced case.

Seriously though, see if your TV can just tell you what kind of signal it's receiving. Sometimes the remote will have some sort of "info" button or something that will bring up the signal characteristics for the current input.

You were right about my remote, haha. I changed the settings and it's displaying properly. 480i when I disable 480p, and 480p when enabled, both in 4:3.

I read the following on an A/V forum...

"Another reason you might be seeing a difference here is problems with the basic white/black level settings on your TV given what's coming from the player. Some players do funny things at 480i and not at 480p and some are screwy the other way around. Typically this shows up as a change of black levels (the image gets lighter or darker when you switch from 480i to 480p unless you remember to make compensating adjustments on your TV) or as a loss of the mysterious "Blacker than Black" data in the signal.."

I have no clue. It's not really that important to me. Also, the start screen for JSRF has a lot of action going on and I've pretty much pressed my face up to my TV looking for significant differences but don't see any. My eyes might not be as trained as a lot of videophiles, however.

Be careful. I'm not sure what all extra information gets sent on YPbPr Component, but it's not necessarily the case that your TV knows what the aspect ratio of the signal is. The video signal isn't separated into discrete pixels, there isn't a strict "horizontal resolution" to the signal, and so it doesn't intrinsically have an aspect ratio. It's sometimes up to the viewer to know what the aspect ratio of the content is and adjust their TV accordingly.

What is NTSC-M?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_television_systems#ITU_standards

NTSC-M is the extremely common 60Hz/30fps (though since the 50's the color standard generally actually uses 59.94Hz/29.97fps) 525 lines (it's generally referred to as 480i if we're talking about the actual picture signal) with NTSC color encoding. If you're in the USA, it's the format used for broadcast TV from 1941 until a few years ago.

Found Jurassic park operation genesis in a pawn shop, was priced at $100 though.

is this game even good? I see the ps2 version isn't that much cheaper on eBay.

I'm almost certain that game went on to become Forza Motorsport. The lighting and reflections are unmistakable. The geometry and track detail is pretty on par as well.

It didn't. A lot of the team went on to make Juiced. There is a demo of the game on a Xbox Magazine disk, although the video is from the full version, which was essentially complete (runs on a retail Xbox even, no debugging functions).

Did the Godzilla games only become expensive due to the movie or something? I found melee for 7 bucks at a store but the other game is going for obscene amounts, really weird..

Anyways, about 2 months ago I think I posted here asking for advice on games I should pick up for the original xbox against the list I already had, and I picked up quite a bit. I'm not hoping to pick up much more but if anyone has any final suggestions please feel free to help me out, just looking to complete my list of worthwhile games (Also mind you that I don't play many racers or sports games)

Also has anyone here played Hunter: The Reckoning, saw it recently and have no clue what it is, any good?

I played the demo ages ago hoping for a Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance clone but it didn't do anything for me. If you want a nice multiplayer Gauntlet-like clone try the BG:DA games instead.

Christ,,,just set up my 2001 launch Xbox to my new 42' Panasonic screen via the RGB Scart connector....and it looks utterly terrible scaled up to 1920x1080p.

I really don't think I could sit there and play a single game on it now, such is the smeary blurry mess I'd have to look at...:((

How I miss CRT.

I was thinking about doing this with mine, been feeling an urge to play Psi-Ops lately.

Yeah, with the official HD box, everything on that system seems to look fantastic in terms of video quality.
I don't have the "box" thing, but I have component cables for my oXbox, and I've hooked it up to our HD LCD. Some games look alright, lots of games look awful. Even if the upscaling wasn't problematic, for a lot of oXbox games a screen with good static contrast is important to the aesthetics, which means a plasma is going to be very helpful if you're not going with a CRT.

Forgive my ignorance but is there any reason why the Xbox One couldn't run original Xbox games outside of software?

The OG Xbox has a x86 while the Xbox One has a x64 processor - to me this seems like the OS could just make a virtual machine and tell the game it's really a Pentium III, no?

It all comes down to money, as parts would still have to be emulated. The custom nVidia chips aren't that easy to handle, but it would be easier than it was on the 360.

Lucky I got those then lol

It's decent fun if you have friends. If you don't, it's not too enjoyable. I thought it was one of the better Gauntlet-style games from that era.

I do like me some Gauntlet but I probably would be playing this solo the majority of the time. Guess it was a good decision to pass on it.

Try component cables for 480p, it becomes bearable.

Also, Plasma tends to do a much better job of sub-HD resolutions than LCD or (especially) LED imo..

The GPU used in XBOX is probably not completely feature compatible with the Xbone GPU. It wasn't completely off the shelf, nVidia custom-built it for Microsoft and retain the rights to the architecture.

the HD remake makes this kind of BC extinct on consoles.

They are development kits. The top two are "Final" development kits which started shipping in August 2001, while the bottom 3 are "Beta/Preview" development kits, which have earlier parts and had to be downclocked due to stability issues.

Just a few questions...

1. Do you still need Pro Action Replay to softmod the console? I have it but I'm not sure if game saves are still made available online?

2. How many backups can I store on the HDD?

3. Will softmodding delete my current game saves?

Thanks! My interest piqued with this because I'd REALLY like to be able to preserve my disc drive (I already had the laser replaced many years ago because my original drive couldn't read GTA: San Andreas properly). Backing up a few of my titles would be perfect. Also, what kind of stuff can the Media Connect do? Thanks.

No, and you never really did. You just need a way of getting the saves from your PC to your Xbox. Some people use (small) USB sticks. You could make an adapter for your PC for a standard memory card. Your choice really.

On the stock one? Depends on the size. Could be just one, or it could be 3-4 (or more) if they are the smaller games.

Nope, doesn't delete your saves. Just follow the instructions and do it right.

Lol I noticed that Phantom Dust is exponentially rising in price after the X1 announcement. Also very few listings in general. Glad I picked it up months ago!

I looked at it earlier, the BIN listings got cleared out, only like 5 US version on eBay right now. I recently found a better copy at goodwill with blinx, halo 2, and a code masters indycar game for $1 each.

I've noticed that a few times with certain games. Shenmue 2 was scarce for a bit and I could only find like 2 versions of Outrun for the genesis on eBay when I really wanted it.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Well, I did it again. I played through Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 with every character back in 2001 when it hit the PS2. That took a while. Well, after buying the Xbox version earlier this year, I ended up doing that again. Which is to say, I played through the game 24 times. I think that means I still like it.
