Eh, if enemies noticed one of their colleagues being yanked away into the sky then logically they'd start a base-wide Alert and you'd never be able to use Fultons. I wouldn't mind them toning down the way the soldiers scream when they're Fultoned, though.

I think Fulton-ing is going to have its own built-in checks drawbacks. We've seen that it costs GMP every time and, judging by the fact that the Level 2 cardboard box upgrade cost 70,000 GMP I think we're going to have to be pretty careful about how we spend it. Then there's the fact that every guy you Fulton eventually makes his way back to Mother Base, and I can't imagine you're going to have infinite guy-storage back there. Peace Walker only let you assign a certain number of guys to each of your units, right? You'll be able to increase the size of Mother Base, but of course you'll need GMP to do it and you aren't going to have that much if you're just Fulton-ing every goat you see, y'know?

Well it's a good sign Konami takes notice of this so most should be happy how fulton turns out in the end.

The demo looked awesome, but there are some things I surely didn't like.

- Big Boss almost doesn't talk, it sure feels weird to listen to other characters having monologues for minutes on end while BB doesn't mutter a word at all.

- Fulton is OP as hell. I was expecting that soldiers would be able to see their comrades in the air more easily, which doesn't seem to happen, and at least hear them when they're screaming. We can see several instances, for example after BB sneaks past the sleeping soldier. He walks very slowly so not to wake him, but once outside, a couple of yards away, fultons a jeep and a screaming soldier and no one sees/hears anything. It's gonna be like PW where fulton took away from dealing with an unwarranted take down of a guard, who could be found by comrades.

- Some parts of the game (like the sandstorm) although amazing looking, seem to be tailored for Reflex Mode, something that I really don't like/use. We can't see shit (which is expected) but that makes for some cheap alerts, as seen on the demo. If he hadn't used Reflex, he would have been found right there, so If you don't like to use Reflex you either have to wait it out, proceed while handicapping yourself, or maybe procure/develop thermal goggles (which might not be available straight away).

- And finally, I was happy when someone said a few days ago that the enemy alerts were no longer instant. The situation they described was that BB entered reflex, but missed on purpose only to kill the guard AFTER reflex had passed. He still managed to avoid the alert.
I don't know if this is the same demo, or if it was changed for dramatic purposes, but BB definitely gets spotted and the whole area goes on alert. I was expecting to see the guard pull up a radio/start a transmission or run to a comrade, but nothing. The alert was instant and it really sucks for those who don't wanna rely on crutches like Reflex. It worked so well in past MGS, why change it again? No wonder they say the game can be hard, only if you don't use reflex. If you do, you can exploit the shit out of that system, If you don't, you have cheap insta-alerts.

Other than that, the game looks better than ever, great graphics and draw distance, plenty of ways and gadgets to tackle missions, everything looks amazing.

I agreed when Kojima said he wanted to work hard on facial animations so that there is much more emotions coming out of snake rather than for example simply restating "a metal gear you say?".

BUT, if snake can't even answer ocelot on his arm just because Keifer is too expansive for VO, just bring back David Hayer or another voice actor. I prefer a hero that talks rather than a mute gordon freeman type of hero.

I hope so, it seems to good at disposing of bodies for it to not have some restrictions. Also I'll definitely be turning off that reflex mode.

Yeah it looks like it's been made way easier than previous games, I like the options but the Fulton which is not only visually obvious but you can hear it and the persons screams is silly if others don't notice it. The reflex mode is not that bad but it will make people less careful.

Just a theory but Kojima probably toned down Snake a bit because people are so familiar with the voice of David Hayter so he might be afraid it destroys the immersion for them.

Damn... and they don't even release 1080p on Youtube for this. What a shame.

I really despise this trend. Youtube footage looks pretty crap and does no justice to visuals. The idea of making money from trailers is alien to be. Seems like another parastic form of earning to be honest.

I am back on board the MGS hype train after the disaster that was MGS4. Odd number Metal Gear games represent.

Agreed.

Besides, people tend to forget that Big Boss was in coma for like 9 years and that everything that has happened at mother base must have had a disturbing effect on him. I mean he lost his arm, dozens of comrades, 9 years of valuable lifetime, his entire legacy - if he was talking like a waterfall/Hayter style, it would make him unbelievable.

I prefer him being more introverted, at least for the beginning of TPP (since you are rescuing Kaz, I assume the Afghanistan mission is one of the early missions in the game.

Demo looked awesome. I appreciate the better movement options, the open-world stealth looks amazing, and the base-building stuff looks awesome (Ocelot doing his signature gesture is so sweet).

But I do echo the complaints of the instant alert system seemingly returning and the fulton mechanic being a little silly. Hope they balance those better.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
"hey guys, remember all those E3 gameplay demos where the games looked really hard the player was dying all the time?"

- no one ever

I get all that, but this mechanic just felt way over powered. Mark ANYTHING and parachute will take it to the mother base, call in ANYTHING and parachute will bring it where you are or where you want it. I don't know, may be its just me. But didn't look mind blowing or something I would like playing for hours and hours beside of wanting to know the story obviously.

Why bother bringing in Sutherland at all then?

because dem new motion capture tech, bro.

I can't see no real reason either but there gotta be something about this, it makes zero sense.

After spending so much time playing GZ, It'll be nice to play a mission without Kaz shouting Captain obvious hints in your ears over and over again...do we have to rescue him :).....I bet Ocelot is going to be just as annoying.

Loved that live demo, I didn't think my hype level could increase, but it has.

People are seriously forgetting how quiet Solid Snake was in MGS4, and the monologues he had to put up with.

Kiefer will talk plenty I'm sure, he even voices that bandaged guy in the hospital section and the medic on the chopper in Ground Zeroes.

I'm not sure how Big Boss could've responded to Ocelot anyway, seems Ocelot was just making idle comments that didn't need responses. I'd prefer a less talkative protagonist over one that has to repeat everything he hears.

the only thing that could destroy my immersion in this game is david hayter's awful peace walker VO work

I'm pretty sure they are already addressing this issue for TPP. Maybe we'll be able to turn off the hints.

God, don't remind me. He was so bad in PW. He forgot to change his Old Snake voice back to MGS3 status.

it's pure speculation on my part, but...

in all likelihood, the fulton will not be that powerful until you are well into the game or even done with it in terms of main story. if peacewalker is an accurate guide, you'll have to develop versions of the fulton as you go. you may not even have it to start the game. then logically there will be a progression. perhaps a limited number of uses, weight limitations (ie. no cars or crates right away). maybe even percentage changes (ie. when you first get it, only 50% success rate) and even the enemies ability to see it changes. things of that nature. and the same can be said for the box and air strike, etc etc

most of the complaints seem to be centered around being too powerful. what most do not realize is that it's a vertical slice of sorts in terms of player abilities to show the breadth of abilities you will be able to acquire and use throughout the game.

Wait, what if Chico really is Quiet? Snake kind looks like an old Chico, and since Snake is so quiet, maybe Chico is Quiet.

Just my own theory, but in the past when big boss and solid snake are in the same game, Kojima has Hayter voice solid snake.

Maybe solid snake isn't as absent as people think.

Yeah, I really like Hayter but his voice in Peace Walker is grating at times, but it must've been the voice director's decision or something because he sounded fine when re-recorded lines for MGS3 3D.

Ik think the GMP amounts we've seen for the fultoning are placeholders. Also look at the team composition of motherbase and the levels of those teams, let alone the size of Mother Base. This is a mission pretty early in the game, presumably the very first open world mission. Your Mother Base will not be that big or developed at that point in the game, and I think your GMP will be pretty limited too. I wouldn't be surprised if ultimately, just like Peace Walker, you'll only want to get specific soldiers for your base and leave the rest where they are. Dont forget this whole thing was set up specifically for this demo.

That's how I feel. I'm excited for the game and all but I'm not excited for these new mechanics. And I hope hard mode doesn't have things like price increases because that's just not making the game harder, it's making it more tedious.

He replied by doing that thing with his prostethic hand.

Yeah the point of getting Keifer to voice and face capture BB was to add actual acting into the gameplay instead of vocal exposition. I think Kojima explained it well in one interview where he said previously the line would be BB saying to Kaz 'Kaz what's wrong ?' but the idea of bringing Keifer in changes the line to just 'Kaz?' but the facial capture and voice acting will give it the weight and emotion.

i definitely think the micromanagement aspects will nerf the fulton. as somebody already explained, you can't have new and more sophisticated equipment developed without the gmp to back it up, and if you're fultoning every thing in sight, your gmp is going to be decimated as a result

Regarding fulton.... I'm almost certain that Peace Walker restricted your fulton use. You could only carry a certain number with you into battle and you were not able to get more mid mission except for some levels where they were pre set drops. Mother Base was always making them and you could upgrade them as well as your carry limit as you increased your levels.

Initial impression nitpicks:

Yuck at that very, very bad old gen grass stretching and sliding. Straight out of MGS3.
Pop-in very bad (plenty of time for fixing that)
Graphics hurt by cross-gen. They said demo is PS4. PS4 can do so much better than this.
Brown desert locales are the worst. Please be a brief portion of the game.
Seriously, that grass.

Good things: Animation great, humor still present apparently, weather/time change, Mother Base

Was that Ocelot at the beginning? Lost his charm. Over the top campy voices are required for Kojima's over the top dialogues and sermons. Those made it work. The crazy MGS world needs self-aware performances.
If it's a typical Kojima Metal Gear script, these normal/bland voices won't match what he puts on screen. I've only heard Ocelot and Big Boss and they made me sleepy.

On other hand, if Kojima really does take try to make MGS an overly serious and dark movie, I fear for the unique fun and goofy but dramatic atmosphere only this series has.

Still buying it of course. It's MGS dang it.

Yeah, for sure. Not to mention that the Ground Zeroes presentations were shown at an untested "lower" difficulty setting. Likely the case here, too. Things like Intel gathering seem to be a huge part of the gameplay, and there's no way that our Intel team will be level 9 by the time we are at this point of the game in, as you said, probably the first open-world mission.

At this point, I imagine it's this: the larger the script, the more Kiefer has to be paid.

As a result, they edited out all the useless filler shit Snake would usually say ("A Metal Gear huh?" "Hmmmm"), but maybe they went too far.
