Hands-on with The Legend of Korra on PS4

Previews are boring and increasingly useless to readers, and this is testament to that. If a preview written on a game company's blog reads just like a preview written on a game site, something's horribly wrong in the way game sites are approaching their coverage, don't you think? Maybe we need to take a long hard look at preview culture and think about who it's really serving.

It's a brand new reveal, of a game no one knew about, that everyone wants to know how it plays and what content is in it, regardless of criticism.

I don't understand if your point is against the PS Blog coverage, or everyone else previewing it.

They didn't lie; it is critically acclaimed.

My hype levels for this game are rising.

The guy over at destructoid sounds pretty excited about it

Maybe. But seeing a GAF thread titled "Hands-on with the Legend of Korra on PS4" that could've been about any game site, but is instead about a game company's blog post, made me think about how weird and uncomfortable this situation is.

Loudninja always reposts Playstation Blog articles with *Multiplatform game on PS4*.

Why is this suddenly an issue?

Kotaku has published bunch of previews, a few of them utterly baffling

So suddenly why is there a problem in preview culture.

Start a thread about it then. Its probably worth discussing but I am not sure a thread that's about a preview of a specific video game is the place to take the conversation about this industry wide phenomena.

Being critical and wary about previews is not a bad thing. Weird that Jason is getting so blowback on his comments.

I actually like learning about games, their mechanics, and their development. Gaining insight into a game I'm interested in isn't 'boring' and 'incredibly useless'.
I like video games, this is just silly.

Ask yourselves: would the PlayStation Blog make a PlayStation game sound bad?

Another equally conspiratorial thought is why would they cover a game that is not exclusive?

Real talk I love the show and I think if the right people made a game it could be great. If old bobby gives platinum space and make platinum do as they do, we have a treat.

Now the real question is will it have the Platiunum touch with ass and titties? Korra is hawt after all.

Ha it sounds like Atsushi Kurooka was introduced to this universe through Korra. He should get around to watching the more consistent Avatar show.

I'm glad that the voice actors and music team are also fully involved in this. This totally negates previous questions of this being a cheap cash in attempt. Then again Star Trek Into Darkness had serious problems so I can't discount the possibility of a very tight schedule screwing this game over.

I'm actually disappointed in how combat is being described so far. Each bending style had it's fair share of long and short range attacks. It's their physical properties that dictated how you fought and how readily they were at your disposal.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Real talk, it's confusing how the announcement is just casually mentioned and we're already getting written previews instead of some actual footage. It's been handled in an incredibly tepid way.

Well fuck me sideways, a Kotaku author preaching about content and coverage.

Sorry Jason, you're a good guy with alright views, but let's not forget the amount of filler crap that comes on your site daily, also I would like to add the UK edition is even worse.

:(

Is this really the best place to bring this up? We're trying to find out any information about a game that no one would have guesses existed a week ago. Take your soapbox somewhere else.

I liked your Pillars of Eternity preview.

At least the Destructoid preview says you get to fight some triads. Too bad it seems like bending styles are specialized and there's no word on you doing stuff other than just beating things up.

This isn't necessarily an incorrect statement, but...I prefer previews to reviews. Previews are forced to be more detached and just tell me how the game plays.

You got Naruto in your avatar. You don't have room to talk, lol.

I think it's absolutely essential to be critical and wary of previews!

But I hope we're all a bit smarter than reading into PS blog posts as statements of quality -- it's about getting snippets of info on a game that as of yesterday didn't exist!

It's a shame future threads about this game are going to get bogged down by people bitching about the perceived quality of the show. :/

so is the problem the preview or the fact that the psblog did a preview

I don't know about that. I have not watched the show but love the work of Platinum and many others are just like that.

Well its not everyday that gamers are treated to a downloadable game attached to a AAA developer.

Activision probably didn't want to over hype a 4 hour downloadable game. :/

She... Loses her powers again?

Is it canon? lmao

Anyways, I'm shocked this sounds good. Well not really, I had faith in Platinum. But I still worried it would be so low budget and time constrained, that they wouldn't have had the proper time to make it. But I'm glad it's at least good. Excited actually.

We have to wait and see, it is a 4 hour game though.

This time yesterday we had absolutely no clue this game existed, now here we are reading a preview of it. I'd forgotten what life was like before leakers happened :p

Ok people, harping on kotaku because of jason's comments is really silly.

We can discuss his point or not, but attacking the website is completely off the mark.

This is a fine place to bring it up.

In a preview that mostly goes over how the combat works? It's not as if they're labeling the game as the best game ever made like previews did with Titanfall. If he wants to talk about how previews aren't trustworthy anymore, make a thread about it then.

Huh, I didn't see that because I unfollowed @kotaku after this.

I heard kotaku was bad, didn't understand why.... then this article

The zinger: Update: It's revealed in the third episode that the dagger-like key she slides back and forth across her wrist doesn't actually slit her wrist—it just looks like it does from an outside perspective. Rather, pulling out the key causes a needle to drop down in the glove and puncture her wrist. It's also shown in the third episode that she doesn't need to even do the slicing motion as the key can be pulled directly out. So it looks like she just does the wrist-slitting gesture for the sake of style... which is still a bit troubling

Haha, I have never seen so much negativity on GAF in response to the idea that people should be more skeptical of previews--especially ones posted on Sony's PlayStation Blog--making video games sound good! Reading this and realizing that it could've been posted on any gaming site is strange and kinda scary to me, as someone who cares a great deal about video game writing and reporting. Given how often people on this site complain about video game journalism, I imagined most GAFfers would agree. Video game sites need to evolve or they'll just be replaced by corporate blogs like this, which will be very bad news for anyone who likes gaming.

lol

The wrist slitting was the least of the problems that show had.
