How badly do we want a Zelda II sequel?

It's been 26 years since the release of Zelda II, and Nintendo has yet to expand the formula of that game.

Isn't it about time for a Zelda II sequel?

Sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Not every game in the franchise needs a sequel. And even if they did, Zelda II would be the least deserving.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I actually do want a Zelda platformer, basically like the idea 3D Land had with that Zelda Stage but taken even further.

Honestly though, I'd really like them to do another Link's Awakening-style game. Really silly, light-hearted, kind of trippy. In fact I'd easily take a remake of that using the LBWs engine over the MM Remake honestly.

And by "Zelda II sequel" are we talking about a new game that just happens to take place after the events of Zelda II, or a game that specifically returns to Zelda II's play mechanics (leveling up stats w/ experience points, learning new skills, separate overworld/combat sections) regardless of location/placement on the Zelda timeline?

Very badly. It's a shame that (what I consider to be) a really solid combat-focused action platformer had to be muddied by some really bad, obtuse overworld design. It still ranks as one of my preferred Zelda games, and I think it deserves a second go, as there's a lot of potential there. It was a bummer for me to see Miyamoto publicly disown it, though.

If they did it would finally get me excited for a new Zelda game. I always wanted to see them further that particular Zelda game design.

I want one.

To think subtle RPG elements were in a Zelda game, and only the second game in, and it's just been abandoned since. Would love them to take this approach again for a handheld entry. It wasn't for everyone, it has to be said, but I'd like to see another Zelda in this vein one day - or let someone else attempt it, at least.

I want that game to be buried into the same dump as all those ET cartridges. I don't want a sequel to that game at all.

If you're looking for some Zelda II goodness you could do worse than trying the NES classic Battle of Olympus. May just be the rose tinted glasses but I preferred it to Zelda II having played both when I was a kid

I don't want a sequel, but I'd gladly take a reboot or a remake. I like the idea of a 2D side scrolling Zelda, but I really hated Zelda II for being so hard and not entertaining at all (imo). But you know, I only played it only a few years ago, bla bla, I can understand why people may like this game.

Best game in the series. Would love them to do something more with it

I beat the game a few years ago without save states. One of the greatest accomplishments I've ever had as a gamer. Seeing those credits roll felt soooooooo good.

It's really not that difficult. Save states definitely aren't needed

As much love as it gets on GAF, I'd rather they didn't do any more ALBW style sequels, at least from a story and asset reuse perspective.

I'd be fine with them revisiting some gameplay concepts from Zelda 2 though. I would be really interested in a faster paced, combat focused Zelda. But I wouldn't want them to just make another game that plays like just that. A limited number of lives, and assholish platforming sequences where an enemy jumps at you in the middle of a jump causing you to plummet to your death are not what I want from the Zelda series.

Skyward Sword was the spiritual successor to Zelda II. From the focus on combat, bar management, disconnected overworld and general mediocrity.

Aonuma hates the action and combat of older Zelda games. Says that it was too hard so he doesn't design his games around that. Not to mention how the game is considered the "black sheep" even though it sold remarkably well and plenty of people liked it at the time.

Seeing how Zelda II had some pretty intense combat mechanics, I'd say we never get a true sequel until Aonuma is off the helm.

ocarina of time as essentially a sequel to Zelda II in that it borrowed more from Zelda II than any other Zelda game. But I get that you mean a 2d side scroller.

I'd much rather have a new wonderboy/monster world game, but I'd still love a game like zelda II.

I feel that the Nintendo of today would never truly capture what made Zelda II great, notably the brilliant challenge.

Dark Souls is modern Zelda II to me, so I feel like I've already gotten a sequel.

I'm happy with Shovel Knight, although I should mention I haven't played Zelda II yet.

It's actually Shovel Knight that makes me believe that a new Zelda with expertly tuned side-scroller game mechanics would be a fun thing. It doesn't need to be so retro, but I got such a kick out of Link's downstab that I think I could enjoy another go at it.

too bad Nintendo didnt go with a 16-bit version of Zelda 2. Would have been one of their best games.

I wouldn't mind it but Zelda 2 is among my least favorite Zelda games. It's just not fun at all, practically unfair at points even.

I would be curious to see how modern Nintendo would handle the style. It'd be a million times easier that's for sure.

I want it. I usually mention it in most wanted sequel/dream games threads. I Always felt the Adventure of Link should have a modern, refined sequel.
I'll be the first one to admit the game has flaws, but I also see a promising core concept that hasn't reached the potential it deserves. It saddens me a little how some people are so quick to dismiss the original game.
I believe this could be THE Legend of Zelda game with the potential to appeal to the core crowd, people who love Demon's/Dark Souls. But only if Nintendo dares to go all out and design the game to be truly challenging with solid, rewarding 2D combat mechanics and a broad range (more in terms of attacks/patterns) of monsters.
I imagine the artstyle to be faithful to the art of the booklet, maybe done by a Japanese animation studio like they did with Wario Land Shake. Or 2.5D with a more darker/serious tone.
Let a new, young, team, or one of their 2nd/3rd party teams develop it.

Nintendo lately seems serious about delivering games for the core crowd, so I wish they would consider this.

I'd also be fine if they made a game like this based on a new franchise.

Agree with this! Zelda II was why i bought a NES, best Zelda so far. I would buy whatever platform it was on even if its called WiiUmepartymotiontransactionWii.

Ocarina of Time borrowed more from Zelda II than it did from A Link to the Past? I'm going to need you to show your work here.

I mean yeah, a few key characters in OoT were name after towns in Zelda II. But beyond that, I'm just not seeing it.

Edit: I guess Dark Link too. But still that's not much.

I would be all over this. Doesnt really have to be a "Zelda"-game either, just give me the same fantastic gameplay in a new game, and I would gladly pay a premium full price for it. DO IT Nintendo (or somebody else)!

I'd like to see Nintendo apply what they've learned since the NES days to their weird offshoot sequels. So I'd love a new Zelda II game, and they could pair it up with a new Doki Doki Panic and make a year of it.

I never finished Zelda II (and never really liked it either, but maybe one of these days I'll just buckle down and do it), but I did think the style had some promise to it. I wouldn't mind seeing an iteration on the idea with some of the NES-era baggage removed.

This game is okay, but much worse than the game it copied imo.

They were making one ala bs, Zelda. Alas, like metroid 2 dx, lost forever in Nintendo's vault.

I'd rather have a classic Zelda remake collection on 3DS. 1, 2, LttP, LA, OoS and OoA all on one card. All of them but 2 could use the Link Between Worlds engine.
