Even though he was a "pretty boy" in Brokeback Mountain (I mean, who gives a fuck what he was a "pretty boy" in - not that I agree entirely with that term with his role in that movie), his role showed his ability to transform. I mean, I get it, people around here are more impressed with comic book films than gay cowboy films, but even if I had some issues with the film, it certainly showed his "true" ability as an actor.

I think you're misunderstanding a "pretty boy" does not mean gay. It is more metrosexual rather than homo.

It's more "he's too handsome and harmless" in the context that I meant it.

Looking at all of heath Ledgers roles, how many films were there where he DIDN'T play some part in a Romance?

Yeah I understand what you're saying, and I would definitely agree with you there. He's never had any role even close to the joker. He did show previously however that he really can act in Brokeback, but it's not the same as the joker of course.

Just because he never played a Joker like character that doesn't mean he was incapable. He was obviously picked for a reason and ultimately unless you saw the audition you shouldn't be commenting.

Theres a great sense of irony here and instead of rationalising why so many people look stupid right now, learn from their mistakes.

I think what he showed in Brokeback is that he could totally lose himself in a character more than a lot of actors, and losing yourself is something that you'd really need to play a character like The Joker.

From what I know, after Brokeback, Nolan knew that Ledger was the only guy for the part.

He had certainly never played a role like the one in BBM - outside of those placing some blanket "romance" title on it all - and he pulled it off.

I dunno if that's directed at me, but I was actually excited when ledger was announced as the joker. I knew the guy could act, and fully expected him to pull it off.

Haha, this is the second greatest GAF bump ever.

The first is that guy who asked advice about his girl and bumped it up over a year later to say they're getting married. That was awesome.

naw the greatest bum is the guy who bump the thread to own posters from 3 years ago regarding the new mortal kombat game.

Yes, that one.

This though in hindsight is actually pretty damn bittersweet.

Your last role was simply incredible, unforgettable. Rest in peace, Mr. Heath Ledger.

"You complete me."

"You and I could do this forever."

I remember that. And the new Mortal Kombat game has a shot at being GOOD, to boot. :D

Awesome bump man.

To tell you the truth though... I didn't think he was a good fit for the Joker either back then. Who fuckin' thought Heath Ledger could create such a iconic personality within himself.

Would you guys rather had Nolan not pick Heath for the role if it meant he would have probably not accidently ODed?

IT'S YOUR FAULT, BATMAN FANS! YOU DID IT TO HEATH!

God that's a horrible scenario you're painting. Of course if we actually could go back and time and we KNEW that not being Joker would prevent him from ODing, I would of course say "don't do it." :p

I called it in another TDK thread showing Ledger off wearing the suit and all. I knew he'd be great. I'm going to see the movie on Monday or Tuesday to avoid the horde of people.

I'll have you know Heath had a history of maniac depression and sleep deprivement.

"Oh please. You act as if the film was over with production when this thread came about. To say Ledger wouldn't be convincing was not a huge deal back then. Get over yourself. we really oughta be bumping the thread where the first trailer with Ledger in it was revealed - then we'll see where the real crow is."

Do you have a link or anything to the first trailer. Not arguing with you just curious.

:lol Ah, completely misread your post. I thought you were saying he was bad in the first trailer and I remembered them all being good. I gotcha now, thanks.
:lol No man, trust me, I was blown away that trailer. Really though, if GAF bumped a thread everytime to prove some wrong, we'd never have any new threads.

Christopher Plummer, Ledger's biggest co-star on the project, tells the mag that Gilliam is working hard to find a way to finish the film and may even use CGI: "Terry's throwing himself into the job of trying to salvage the picture. [Gilliam is] trying to work out at this moment how to continue on. Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people and then, using stills and I think they call it CGI... Terry was a very good friend [of Heath's]. He very wants to go on with the movie, and I can very much understand why. Because he wants to dedicate it to Heath, of course."

still though not finished with ledger :(

Like i said though, there was no menace in any of his roles. He could transform for sympathetic characters, but absolutely nothing he's done indicated that he could be a symbol of pure evil.
And apparently he couldn't transform back.

Insane amounts of crow-eating in this thread. Holy crap.

To be fair though, I don't think anybody saw a performance of this caliber coming from Heath. He really took the role and made it something amazing.

This is second only to that DC/Mortal Kombat bump :lol

Reading through the thread and laughing, I still got shivers reading the last few lines of Batman Begins.

Ouch, I feel bad. So uneducated. *bow Nolan* *bow to Heath*

Of course I was on board after a week's time to let it sink in, but it was so out of left field at the time. The fans basically picked Bale for Begins, and I know many thought this casting process would be the same way. But Nolan hand picked the best man for the job in this one. So iconic. The lesson, leave creative work to creative people. Also, never doubt Nolan unless you particularly like the taste of crow.
