Mark Cerny suggests Knack 2 could happen

Here's how I would go about Knack 2:

- more open sandbox levels with 3d camera control
- more player agency in choosing when to get big or small, or use wood/ice etc, rather than have it be compulsory at various times

Definitely on both accounts. It could really open up the game's design if they allowed storing elements you collect and the ability to swap them on the fly via radial, etc.. You could have sections of levels that can only be accessed using certain types (and sizes) of Knack but that those sections could be returned to at any time if the world is more open like a proper action-adventure game a la Okami, etc..

And I want a fishing mini-game.

Add a good loot system and I'm all set.

The IP name is tainted now. It would be an uphill battle to get an adequate amount of gamers excited about a sequel.

Trying something else with an IP that has already been tainted isn't very wise IMO. The IP holds no value. Try new gameplay elements in something NEW instead of sequels to mediocrity.

Constant sequels are already a plague on the industry, but at least for GOOD games, it can still be made to be a fantastic game. But for an IP that has already tripped and broken its leg right out of the gate? You're going to patch that leg back up and send that horse out again? I don't think you'll create a winner doing that as far as sales are concerned.

It's destined to be a mediocre selling game.
Why are you still responding like he actually said he's actively working on a new Knack game? This is whole lot of faux concern for an off-the-cuff response in an interview. The fact that you don't want to see a Knack sequel has been heard loud and clear, but that shouldn't mean the man can't even talk about the possibility.

And let's not act like there aren't ample examples of mediocre or poorly received first efforts that didn't end up getting significantly better sequels.

Not to mention the IP hardly failed as badly as you'd like to portray it. It wasn't done on a massive AAA budget and sold fairly well, notably got more positive word of mouth from players than critics. So as far as spending development money wisely goes, it's actually far from the worst decision they could make.

I like you Cerny but please,

don't plant the definition of "indie" any more wrong than it can be to people's heads.

Knack was underwhelming, and I'm putting it nicely.

My nephew is gonna go nuts as should kids all over...it's a good game for them.

Unfortunate most people only think for themselves rather then what others might enjoy.

Most hate for the game comes from adults not finding it appealing because it is not mature enough and the gameplay is very basic.

The game has flaws, many of them stem from its production schedule. Its a very basic game that does some things quite well and others not so much.

In all honestly the lingering thought while I played through the game for the Platinum trophy is how much better a sequel could be, which begs the question: If knack was held back a year and more polish put into it, would a sequel be heralded or lauded?

Does it even matter what GAF thinks since the vast majority of its members do not fall into the demographic that the game is intended for?

making games 'for an audience' is sort of one of the worst things you can do as a developer. you start with some preconceived notion about a fanbase that may not even exist. it puts this audience beneath you. 'well, i might not like this, but kids would like it.' is basically condescending to that group. something like tearaway or mario or skylanders are good games that kids can enjoy. they also aren't insultingly simplistic. knack is like every 80s action show modeled to young boys to get them to buy toys. tearaway is more like batman: the animated series.

Isnt it ratchet and Clank year almost every year?

fine by mean as long as All 4 one and Seceret Agent Clank never happen again.

Crazy Opinion Alert!:

I - a man who describes the R&C franchise as the best franchise of all-time - thought All 4 One was amazing. It was just what I needed from a franchise that I felt was growing stale. The beautiful environments, the CreatureBox art style, the dichotomy of Dr Nefarious' feelings - all amazing. The varied gameplay was also a breath of fresh air. (since then, the smaller scale games are another story.)

I'd welcome a sequel of it with open arms, where Knack 2 would be met with indifference.

Bring on All 4 One 2?... All 4 Two?... All 4 One, Too?... All 5 One?

I forgot, a sequel should also have a better platforming to brawling ratio. The fighting was fun but not every screen needed to be a combat arena.

OP's avatar is perfect. I really wish they'd try something else. Why make a sequel to something that was mediocre?

Do you have any idea how many fantastic games would not exist if people did not? Think about that for a minute. I promise you it is a shit load of great games.

I liked it, it was bemoaned as the root of all evil when it dropped, and it certainly isn't a great game by any means...but I just don't see what warranted the harsh reception to be honest.

I welcome this news. The first game really isn't as bad as people say it is, a sequel with a more focused development and some more variety could be fantastic.

Yup.

Things I'd like changed:

Level variety/design. Needs to be more varied.

Make the size changing more dynamic, let there be multiple ways to solve puzzles rather than force a size change at certain parts of the levels (let it be up to you).

Add more platforming sections.

Change the combat of the bigger sizes of Knack, I don't know to what, but something just doesn't feel right the way it is in the first one, at least for the biggest sized version.

Even more enemy variety (there was quite a bit in the game, I was fine with it, but more would be welcome)

A better story, better written, less cliched characters. Knack's character absolutely needs to be developed better.

Consistent, smooth framerate. Though I only noticed a hitch or two where it actually felt like it was running sub-30fps. This game was running at a weird unlocked framerate. Like it wasn't high enough of something. I was fine with the unlocked framerate in God of War 3 and inFAMOUS Second Son, but this one, definitely needed framerate to be locked and smooth, it would've presented much better. (I put this last, because it wasn't that big of an issue to me, but I feel bad for the people who had problems with GoW3 and I:SS trying to play this game)

Things not to change or just tweaked:

Some of the combat at the lower sizes. I absolutely loved doing this with regular/small sized. You could jump towards one direction, air dash towards another right after, do the second mid air jump towards another direction, and another air dash towards another direction. and finish off with an attack in another direction Felt pretty awesome dodging income projectiles/attacks when you had initiated a jump already.

Don't take out co-op, and the fixed camera on player 1 actually works out quite well (and leads to some really hilarious moments as well).

Keep the difficulty. Absolutely loved the one and only playthrough I did, in 2 player co-op on Hard. Was the right amount of frustration/reward. (I can't comment on solo difficulty though)

Yes please!! X 1000 straight into my veins and all that.. So much story left to tell in this universe. Was the first game I finished on my ps4. Sleeper hit for sure.

A good example (for me) would be the change in quality from Dark Cloud to Dark Cloud 2.

I think huge Knack should be immune to damage from some sources. No matter how many relics you were composed of you always, always felt super fragile. There was never a point in the game where I took a hit and didn't look at my health bar and go "god damn", no matter how massive Knack was.

Agree with all of your points really, and others made in this thread. Knack has a flow to it that's just... fun. And it requires you to be mindful of your positioning and your timing and your enemy patterns, and to keep cool, all without needing to be stressed about it to succeed. Bring it on.

Please don't. The character is really bland, the gameplay mechanic isn't fun, and there really isn't anything redeeming about any aspect of the game.the only reason it received even mediocre scores was that it was a launch title. It is simply a bad game.

After a lot of time with Knack I have decided it's not a bad game. Yea it's a lame character but the game it's self showed some promise. Would love to see them re-skin and make a "spiritual" sequel with a likable character

More often than not, those sequels were atleast building on an interesting foundation. There is nothing interesting about Knack.

I think this part of the article which everyone in here is ignoring is far more interesting:
"I’m trying to get back to games," he said. "One of the projects I’m trying to kick off is a so-called 'indie title'. It won’t really be an indie title because it’ll be fully funded, but it’ll be nice to have a project where the scope is small enough that I’ll know the names of everybody on the team, which is really hard to do these days now that you’ve got 100, 200, 300 people internal plus everyone outside the company.

I wonder how many people ITT are saying they want a Knack 2 because they love Mark Cerny

I want a Knack 2 because I enjoyed the first one, and this type of game isn't growing on trees anymore. I find it hard to love a tech executive that I've never met.

No thanks. Haven't played Knack yet, but I didn't like how most of the gameplay seemed like a Lego beat em up. Knack himself is a pretty unappealing protagonist too.

Would rather see Cerny make a new "mascot" game. One more in line with the likes of Sonic, Crash, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and whatever else he worked on. I liked all of those, but am not really interested in Knack.

I would love a new Knack game if they made it more fleshed out. Imagine a 3d Mario game with Knack's graphics...
