Why does Resident Evil 3 get so little love?

I loved Re3 more than Re2 and RE:cv was worst classic re. RE:CV and Dino 3 ruined capcom image in my eyes.
This is the only game where i felt like i was being hunted.

Also RE which gets no love is RE0 it was fantastic and much better than CV

I am not sure. All I can think of is that it's because it is story-lite, and added a few gameplay mechanics to the series that mostly fell flat.

To me, it's one of the series' upper-tier games. I think it's notably superior to RE2 and CVX, the games that preceded it and followed it, respectively. It nails the survival horror aspect of the Resident Evil series better than any other aside from the original/REmake. Nemesis adds a heightened sense of tension to the entire game, and the complexity of the puzzles and higher overall level of challenge compared to RE2 really made this game stand out for me.

It's probably my second-favorite RE after REmake.

Man I ever never seen any of these before and I thought I had seen it all. News Bot you are really one of the most informative posters around. Thank you good sir.

Yea RE3 is really great. It was a fantastic follow up to RE2 and help expand the story and put some real perspective into the series. Plus RE3 really helped scoped Raccoon City as a whole.

One of the first things that blew my mind when playing it for the first time was that you could walk up and down stairs without generating an automated animation or a loading sequence. That truly surprised me at the time but in retrospect doesn't sound that amazing.

I still find it funny how this game was a spin off but Capcom just made it a numbered title because they had a deal with Sony.

This is actually my favorite of the original trilogy.

Although, I never did understand why Jill jumps through an exploding wall in the beginning of the game. Did she blow it up herself? Was it an accidental explosion? Was the building she was coming out of her apartment or some other random building? The game never provided any context for that. >.>

They didn't :(

In reality they were just pretty picky and wanted a trilogy on the PlayStation for sales reasons. It was upgraded from a side-story when the other PS title they had going on ended up being scrapped to make way for giving them a headstart on PlayStation 2 development.

The scene was mainly just to throw you into the deep end. The less you know about it, the more effective it is.

I remember when my cousin used to bring his PS just to play Nemesis, I really enjoyed it. Never got to finish it though :(

Edit: If we're going to start a comparison thing between CV and RE3, I must say CV is nowhere near to be a bad game, in fact, exactly the opposite.

My two cents.

Because 2 was better. I haven't played it in awhile, but I remember it being ridiculously short. It's not bad, but was not worthy of being numbered the third of the series.

CV gets shit on way more because it is far shittier.

It's not as much shitty as having some pretty big designs flaws. It's probably the hardest RE game simply because you can save yourself into a corner even by playing well. It has some really bad boss battles where you can actually "waste" resources on that makes completing the game very difficult
Airplane boss at the end of the first disc, Steve Dinosaur Boss Fight
.

I still enjoy it a lot and much more than RE0.

I dunno about that. That just seemed to be way too random to me.

Honestly, I think it may have actually been better implemented if you started out inside that building (let's just assume it was Jill's apartment) and had to find your way out through solving a puzzle while zombies are clawing at your door or something.

Take the final area in the game for example with the dead soldiers and Tyrants. The amount of story surrounding that single segment is pretty stellar:

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. The mess of scenarios occurring between RE2/3 and Outbreak make for a great read.

I find it hard to truly decide between 2 and 3. 2 is, well, 2. It has the enemies, the soundtrack, the A/B scenarios, and whatever else. But 3 has more options for gameplay (weapons, ammo creation, Nemesis options, routes) and the Mercenaries mode (which got boring, but is better than Hunk/Tofu... Although inferior to 2's EX Battle).

I'm surprised I've never seen the prologue for 3, thanks for that News Bot.

As a kid I'd always assumed the start of the game was her looking for Chris, although I think that's wrong.

For me it's the best classic RE, i love every single aspect of it. I've replayed it ton of times and i still can't get enough.

Maybe it's the nostalgia (it was the first game i played on the PS1), and even after playing 1 and 2 i feel they are far from what 3 wonderfully achieves.

Here's the beautiful ending theme

Is it safe to assume that other title was Onimusha?

Agreed with all the love. Easily my favorite Resident Evil and probably goes in my top ten of all time.

This game perfectly encapsulated the feeling of a zombie apocalypse at the time and had the best setting in the series. It was also the scariest game I had ever played and I would have to have friends come over to be in the room with me whenever I did brave it. Nemesis still frightens me to this day, but only from this game. Fuck him in Umbrella Chronicles and Operation Raccoon Shitty.

It had badass Jill, better gameplay, an amazing villain, multiple paths, one of the greatest shotguns of all time, and let's not forget the greatest RE character ever having a cameo at the end.

Fuck I love Resident Evil 3.

It was actually a "BIO3" that featured HUNK on a cruise ship. It began development around November 1997, before 2 was released. It would've completed the trilogy. However, the project was rearranged so that Kamiya took over as director and started from scratch on the PS2. It was later renamed BIO4 and eventually became Devil May Cry, while BIO1.9 took the BIO3 title.

(It can get pretty confusing)

To be honest it felt a little too stressful, and something about having the whole city to explore instead of the mansion, or the police station.. It was harder to be connected with it.

It was scary, but it didn't have the same feel as RE2 for sure.

edit: I also didn't like the half prequel, half sequel nature of it. Felt like a retread.

That was pretty much the point. The old team's goal was to create each game with an independent style of horror. 1's was the fear of isolation. 3's was the fear of pursuit. 4 would've been psychological fear, and so on.

The goal of CV was to revisit BIO1's fear of isolation because they believed there was a high possibility that, like movies, they would "fail" with the actual third title. So they wanted to create something "new" that was already demonstrated to be a success.

This is the real sequel to RE2. None of that CVX is bullshit. RE3 actually offered a lot of new mechanics to the game and aside from graphics honestly offered more than CV did.

Not to mention it easily offered the best BOW villain in the resident evil universe. Lastly it has a Regina alt costume for Jill.

I guess I am in the minority here, but i think re1, re2, and re3 are all amazingly great games and they all have their highs and lows but all 3 are classics. I was a Dreamcast diehard and played Code Veronica on DC first, then later on gamecube (code veronica x).. Honestly i think CV is an inferior product and they were right in not giving it a number. I still like it, but it's an oddball.

And yes, i'm the guy who loves RE6. So there.

RE3 is a masterpiece and IMO it's just as good as RE2 and REmake and RE4. Whole freaking franchise is the GOAT in gaming. The save room theme from RE3 still brings mantears to my eyes. And Jill is still the ultimate videogame protag...of all time. Best amongst all.

It's been many years since I played it, but off the top of my head...

1.) The story was extremely weak. It was nothing more than "get out of the city". There was no mystery being unraveled, no real plot twists.
2.) There were no interesting characters. Carlos is lame. Jill was alright, I guess. Going from the amazing interactions between Ada and Leona to that was a downgrade.
3.) There were much fewer iconic moments. Beyond Nemesis, the game was pretty by-the-numbers, but even the concept of Nemesis was already done in the second game.

It's a perfectly acceptable Resident Evil game, it just doesn't have the thing it needs to be great.

It had this thing

What a badass way to end the game. Though it does make me wonder if this cannon was the early prototype for the Solar-Cannon in Revelations.

The the notion that CV is better than 3 can even be seriously entertained is baffling to me.

It's not REmake or RE2 levels of awesome, but 3 is definitely top tier stuff.

CV is a hot mess.

CV is a hot mess.

This basically became a serious issue after the Dreamcast died and its top shelf games could do no wrong...even if they did wrong.

That and the story floating around that CV was the true RE 3 (nope, always a side story itself) and the persecution really began.

my favorite game in the series. Jill was a badass. Nemesis was a total badass. like others said, a lot of tension. plus the cgi scene were nemesis shoots down the helicopter and the fight afterwards had my adrenaline running on high.

a ps4 remake would be greatly appreciated capcom

Finished this RE the most. Loved the feeling of the game and unlocking the small case files at the end of each completion. Starting on Hard and playing the game through the 'proper' way so many good times.

I suppose there is no way I can legally obtain a copy for PC being in Australia. I'd love to go throw the game one last time with double barrel shotgun.

I like Zero more than CV and Six and about as much as Five. Fun game that looks great even today but has some serious flaws as well. It is completely overlooked in the grand scheme of things because it is still to this day Nintendo exclusive.

It felt like the series was just treading water with RE3. Pretty much the same in scope and overall design as RE2 (which had been a vast improvement over the first game and hence more interesting.)

Aside from that, Code Veronica was released the following year and felt like a true step forward for the series.

Most under rated

I hate it mostly for the Dr. Marcus storyline, but I can see where some will hate the bosses and I personally felt the Eliminators were more of a pain in the ass than the intended challenge (which the devs got right with the humanoid leeches; tough and fierce, but still manageable).

I really enjoyed it though. Liked it more than CV and 6.

As for RE Nemesis, it was my first RE and the most fun out of the originals IMO.

I've said this many times before, but I'd love to see a RE2/3Make that did RE3 Day 1, RE2 Scenario A, RE2 Scenario B, RE3 Day 2, and The 4th Survivor with much more integration between all of them, a massive massive Mercs mode, and so on.

WOW, just... wow. You should go and work for Capcom. Like, NOW. If this game happens, it's a Day Zero buy for me.

If RE3 indeed gets little love, it's definitely not from me (own the PS1 version and the Japanese DC version, which is excellent for too many reasons). Although the rest of the series (until 4) around it are too strong: REmake is the closest to being "objectively" the best of the old school REs, 2 has the best story, soundtrack, and pacing, and 4 is just simply GOAT.

But the mechanics in 3 are so fun, and the game so full of despair (the first seven seconds or so of the Uptown still send chills down my spine to this day), that any self-respecting RE fan should give it a shot. Although I wish that the dodging mechanism worked more consistently...

I dunno about that. That just seemed to be way too random to me.

Honestly, I think it may have actually been better implemented if you started out inside that building (let's just assume it was Jill's apartment) and had to find your way out through solving a puzzle while zombies are clawing at your door or something.

Why would someone like Jill be sitting around in her apartment during the outbreak waiting for zombies to literally start clawing at her door before she decides to leave?

Did you play Haunting Ground? It was the last true survival horror game capcom released and it was all about being hunted.
