35 Developers Share Their Picks For Best Games Of The Generation

Even if handhelds counted, Mother 3 wasn't a last generation game.

Yeah, you're right. I dunno, Twilight Princess barely counts to me, but I suppose it barely manages to edge onto the list. I really like Swery's list, even though I don't like Heavy Rain. At least it was different.

I feel these kinds of lists aren't overly valuable without an explanation of why.

Like what did they see in each title? To me that's much more interesting than just a list.

Maybe for some obscure titles but I don't think it's hard to puzzle out why so many developers enjoyed Skyrim.

Love reading these type of lists. Always fun and insightful. A lot of my favorite games got represented too.

I was really hoping they'd survey a few Japanese developers though. I have no idea what they'd be into right now.

4gamer will probably do it at some point. They do yearly favorite lists for Japanese developers. Last year the top three picks were The Last of Us (14), GTAV (12), and Dragon's Crown (12).

I wonder how hard it was for pitchford to not put gearbox only games on his list

What do you mean? His post was pretty clear.

The words made a complete sentence and worked together to form a thought, but not one that makes any damn sense.

How did it change multiplayer forever?

Why?

Handheld games are a tier below PC/Console games.

Good to know fire emblem awakening is doomed to be forever lower than Ride to Hell just because of the platform it was on

I had this all written out and deleted it just to say "This". Empty list with no explanation is kind of disconnected considering that it doesn't feel like a complete opinion without it.

Mine would be:

1. The last of us
2. Rock band
3. Metal gear rising
4. Wipeout HD
5. Sonic generations (PC)

Is this acceptable gaf?

Of all the devs featured, my picks probably most align with Raphael Colantonio (Dishonored, Dark Messiah, Arx Fatalis):

This dev was the only one to mention Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Notably, his colleague and former Ion Storm dev Harvey Smith did not list the game. Is a bit disappointing ...

I think you guys are forgetting one very minor detail.

Every developer being questioned has to answer to some friend or colleague who would no doubt ask him why his game isn't on the list.

WOW at the Deadly Creatures mention. One of the last of those crazy ideas for a game that actually worked out decently.

This dude knows what's up. I always imagined when I was a child that there would one day be a game in which I played as a spider.

Very few there I agree on.

GTA V and Fallout: New Vegas I agree on, the rest nope.
Also missing games like Hitman Absolution and Banished.

Greg Kasavin's list if definitely my fav

...I dont know how Ted Price can feel that way about Uncharted 3.... unless its the only thing he got around to playing or something :/

Really surprised at the lack of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. Demon's Souls was incredibly ahead of its time as far as multiplayer features go, as it set up the model that will be used for many online-enabled single player games this generation.

That's not really a thing. Most developers are insecure enough that they wouldn't believe you if you said that they made one of the best games of the generation.

That's right, only you know what is fun and the best games out there, screw the consensus.

Yeah heaven forbid you'd expect more than a couple of indie games/PC games/Japanese games/handheld games to show up.

But nope, just western AAA console blockbusters. Glad that the industry is in such good hands >.>

Why?

Handheld games are a tier below PC/Console games.

I don't really agree with this, but for this past generation I can't think of any handheld games that would break my top 5 (unless you count Vita-Spelunky, which I do, since it's the only way I play it).

Zelda and Fire Emblem were pretty good, but I doubt they'd make my top 20, and I can't think of anything else.

<fake edit> I just remembered Picross 3D which I probably put 100+ hours into and would be a strong contender for my list.

F:NW is indisputable. Best writing, great quests, choices, companions, player freedom and agency...

But Arkane does not seem to be learning from any of it.

Bastion guy's list seems best

and cmon Swery, there's no way you meant Beautiful Katamari when Katamari Forever exists & has its best levels

Or maybe handheld games just aren't that good.

yet TWEWY was one of last gen's finest RPGs...man get outta here with this

If Demon's/Dark Souls was on more of these lists, gaming would literally be in a better place. Step your game up, developers.

I really like Randy Pitchford's (Ni No Kuni!), Greg Kasavin's and Rami Ismail's lists.

Yeah, heaven forbid that some people don't find indie and handheld games to be the best games of the generation.

Maybe Beautiful Katamari was actually awesome and none of us knew about it since half the game was DLC?

haha, damn - i know i bought like 4 levels day 1 when it dropped, so i was totally part of the problem

if i remember correctly though, several of those just reused maps, too. shit was one of my first impressions of DLC, and it wasn't a good one.
