Rayman's a trophy in Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS...Wait, WHAT?!

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
I just saw this news. This is indeed bizarre.

This really isn't going to help stop the "Wonder-Red is third party" bullshit.

This is so weird haha. It seems so random to have Rayman here all alone. I wonder if there'll be more 3rd party trophies, like classic characters from Nintendo consoles (some FF ones from the SNES for example).

The whole idea of having a third party trophy is dumb to me, especially when it's a well known character like Rayman.
:/
I'm starting to think we might get Rayman as a DLC character in the future; there is a small chance he could be on the disc, but I wouldn't' get my hopes up.

I like this if it means we're going to get a bunch of third party trophies from different franchises and developers. If it's just Rayman or Ubisoft stuff, then I actively hate it.

You have no idea the ruckus that'd cause if it were to happen.
You mean in the sense of being the hypest game of the world? Crash definitely has the moveset to belong into a Smash game. Wumpa-bazooka's, super spins, belly flops, sliding tackles, maybe some jetpack gimmicks and so on.

....this means ubisoft changed the drugged face ?

But they were the ones that gave the model to sakurai in the first place....

Pseudo-Rayman confirmed.

The picture Ubisoft posted has totally different lightning effects. It's probably 3DS <-> Wii U version of the trophy.

Pic of the day. In order to make Rayman's trophy, we asked Ubisoft to share their references. We were expecting to receive 2D drawing references for Rayman, but to our surprise, they sent us data of a brand new 3D model that they rendered for this game!! And that was how this trophy was created. It takes a lot of work creating each model, so it's wonderful that the creators contributed their own efforts!!

Looks like Rayman sobered up, finally.

I'd argue NSMBU is better than that from level design alone.

You're fucking nuts.

Rayman has way more gameplay variety and amazing graphics and music. Especially when compared to the shitshow NSMBU is graphically and musically.

It's also got better level design than any 2D Mario I've ever played.

Better controls too.

You do realise his opinion isn't an unusual one. A great distance from "fucking nuts".

Opinions of people who don't play the UbiArt Rayman games with the run button pressed down at all times.

The way it's meant to be played. So good... The levels have an amazing pace.

You didn't play many Maro games then. Rayman Legends is fantastic, but Mario's level design and game mechanics / controls are unmatched. Rayman Legends imo actually is just the number 4 among the Wii U 2D platformers, behind the NSMBUs and DKCTF. However, RL still is an outstanding game and Rayman absolutely deserves to be in Smash.

His body is also smaller + further away from his feet, which looks much better. That was bothering me haha, so I'm glad they fixed it.

While I'm not about to blow the horn of NSMBU, the Ubiart Rayman games aren't really that good imo. Holding the run button and running right isn't fun or rewarding, especially with no penalty for dying. It's essentially reading the signals of the game to know when to press jump or hit. Much like a QTE. I beat Origins including the Land of the Livid dead, and probably got about half way through Legends and only because people kept telling me to play on, but I never found either of them to be that good.

Origins is really good. But legends was kind of disappointing, honestly.

They both don't even touch the brilliance of Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, though.

The Miiverse pic could probably what the trophy will look like in the Wii-U version whilst the Facebook pic is from the 3DS version.

Seems like a matter of taste. I loved Tropical Freeze, but personally liked Origins and Legends a bit more.

Still, Rayman has had a better track record than Sonic. Doubt he's playable though, as much as I would like it.

Not even fucking close.

Lol!

I got NSMBU as part of the free download with MK8, I have to say legends is better in everyway. Stages are more fun, more variety, hidden items are not just in predictable places, harder platforming.

Yoshi's New Island based on reviews and neogaf reactions sucked bad, I think its silly to dismiss rayman as being crap because of 1 Nintendo platformer (Tropical freeze) when it surpassed others.

Someone likes very easy platformers, I see. To say that a Rayman game is better than DKC:TF is almost like a blasphemy. And I say that like someone who very much likes the Rayman games. So much that I have Rayman Fiesta and Rayman Jungle on my phone for my daily commute.

Rayman Origins and Legends are better than every other 2D platformer released in the past 20 years... erm, more like 19, since Yoshi's Island came out in 1995.

Hahaha, New Super Mario Bros. U and even Wii are far and away better....not to mention the Donkey Kong and Kirby games.

People are easily fooled by Rayman´s stellar presentation, the level design and secrets are painfully mediocre.

The good Mario U (and Mario Bros 3 etc.) levels are built so that we have multiple "paths" through every segment of their level design. Every item that keeps you off the ground is a basic micro-branching path. Factor in all the power ups and the different ways to traverse the environment they bring (ice mario can do wonderful things with ice blocks, etc) plus the speed run potential, and the gameplay is organically different every time you play the level, and (most importantly) you're always making personal choices on what to do in these levels with immediate OPTIONS.

Rayman Legends has like 2 or 3 "paths" per stage where you either A) do the thing right in front of you or B) do a speed boost to get past it, and land back on path A. I mean, the action is fun, but it's not the same joy. Rayman Origins was more like Mario in level design than Legends, though.

As someone who loves both the UbiArt Rayman and DKCR series, I'd have to say Tropical Freeze is the better overall platformer over Legends, but it's not that simple.

In terms of presentation, I give it to Legends for the beautiful art, music. It'd also win in terms of multiplayer because of each player having level footing, and most importantly, it doesn't remove from the single player gameplay (i.e DK getting nerfed in multi). Legends even wins in content with daily/weekly challenges, kung foot (which I still play a lot with friends) and costumes.

The reasons Tropical Freeze still wins in my book, are the platforming mechanics and untouchable level design. Where Rayman's hover slows to a constant speed, all the added Kong mobilities allow you to play with momentum and offer more varied gameplay. The level designs I think speak for themselves too. As much as I loved the Rayman games, I often felt like I was just running along in a rhythm based game. I would just hold right, the run button, and jump/punch through the levels. Only collectables seemed to slow me down.

Both games are a wonderful example of platformers in the modern age, but I think Tropical Freeze is just a little better.

(I purposefully ignored the Murfy levels)

I always find it funny when you get the posts against the latest Rayman games that dont elaborate on why they dont like them and instead harps on inventing reasons why people who like them were "easily fooled". Its either the graphics, or they like easier things, or that they just havent played the REAL classics like *insert crummy c64 platformer here* just tricking them into preferring Rayman. I dunno I just dont buy into arguments that have to resort to that kind of speculation.

The powerup playground of the Mario games are cool, but I never found them super compelling compared to more tied down games. My current rankings out of the three series are DKCTF > RO > DKCR > RL > The first three NSMB games (have yet to play U/L so who knows!)

The Rayman games (and Retro's DK games too) to me are built around finding out how to flow through a stage. Knowing when to turn a jump into a slide to shave off a few seconds in the time trials etc. Legends is a bit disappointing because they give you those moments for "free" and the Invasion stages on the whole arent as robust as Origins' time trials in terms of learning the levels. I think TF edges out Origins since it has more diverse levels, the partner characters, and the boss battles are better (origins is really weak in this regard and is bested by any other platformer even Legends). The "secrets" in the Rayman game are more comparable to the puzzle challenge rooms in the Retro DKC games, and when compared to those I think Rayman comes out on top. Rayman also comes out on top over TF when the latter apes the chase based debris falling everywhere water levels from Rayman. Rayman's swimming controls feel specifically tuned for these moments, while none of the four options in TF felt quite right enough.

I dunno, opinions. I think its mostly fascinating how in this thread when people have given a lineup its almost always different. All three series are really top notch (ignoring the first NSMB game imo) so people really have to get down to the nitty gritty on what they like when picking a favorite. That people have to drill down so deep to go "I prefer Mario because of the way the power ups affects playthroughs" or "I prefer Donkey Kong because of the weight of the controls" because theres no obvious king I think is really cool as a fan of the genre
