Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

This is so disingenous. No, it doesn't run sub-30 most of the time, nor does it run at "20 fps." It runs at 30 fps with occasional slowdown when things get intense, just like the saturn version (for example, the saturn version slows down when the rockets explode in toon land).

I'd much rather play a game with more content and a save system than a system that runs at a marginally crisper resolution.
You are incorrect.

The Saturn version runs at 60 fps with minimal slowdown. Where did you get the idea that it ran at less than 60?

The 3DO version actually DOES run under 30 fps a good amount of the time. It slows down CONSTANTLY.

It was one of the first games I bought when I picked up a 3DO a couple years back and was surprised at how choppy it was. Both the Saturn and PSX versions are 60 fps.

I own all three.

From playing it. Also from your own statement - you just said it has "minimal" slowdown.

No, it slows down OCCASIONALLY.

Neato. I own 4 copies of Gex.

I just played the first level on Saturn. No slowdown.

On 3DO, lots of slowdown. Near constant (in the sense that almost every time you collect items, break blocks, or perform any action that results in additional sprites, it slows down)

I own 4 as well (JP and US versions of the Saturn version). Not the PC version, though.

What are you arguing here? The 3DO version runs at half the frame-rate and often slows down to 20 fps. It was HUGELY disappointing. The only 60 fps side-scroller I've found on 3DO thus far is Soccer Kid, unfortunately. The fact that everything is interlaced makes it all much worse too.

I'm arguing that it doesn't slow down to the degree you're claiming, obviously.

That's difficult to argue then as I perceive the slowdown unacceptable in a side-scroller that is already 30 fps. 30 fps in a side scroller from that era is just awful so to slow down as often as it does really makes a bad impression on me.

If you find it to be acceptable, that's fine I guess.

To come from the SNES or Genesis where nearly every game was 60 fps made the jump pretty jarring.

Hahaha. And argue about its different versions too. o_O Only on NeoGAF. :)

(This isn't meant to be a disparaging comment, btw, but I do find it amusing.)
It's an interesting talking point for me, actually, as it was one of the very few attempts at a classic 2D platformer on 3DO. It highlights some of the deficiencies in its hardware design. 3DO worked in a very different way compared to most of its contemporaries which could allow for some unique stuff but it was not well suited for 2D games.

GEX was basically the system's "mascot platformer" making it surprising to me that it could only operate at 30 fps with slowdown.

People actually play and enjoy Gex?

Holy shit.

If you're talking about the 3D ones, maybe I could understand. But the original? What's wrong with it? It's a pretty standard fair 2D platformer, not amazing but certainly not bad. I liked the way the difficulty ramped and I thought it had great level design near the end, and, for the time, really good graphics.

I blame the game starting with that boring cemetery world for your negative opinion. Around toon land is when it starts getting good.

2 people on Amazon are selling Panzer Dragoon Saga for 360 bucks and it includes all 4 discs, the case and manual...

That's the cheapest I've seen for that game recently.

I sold my copy on eBay this week for $290.
...I would had loved to buy that.=O

What got me into the series was playing Panzer Dragoon Orta 1st and then beating it to unlocking the original Panzer Dragoon and I played that too so I might as well get the rest to complete the series.

Oh right that is why I never bought Panzer Dragoon. Oh well I wasnt going to turn it down for $15. Now I have it for Saturn and Xbox.

Finally joined the Saturn club today with a model two purchase with Virtua Fighter 2. It has problems outputting video with the rf cable it came with, but that only happens in in game menus, but not during actual gameplay. I'm pretty sure it's just my TV being janky with rf since it doesn't happen on the other TV I tested it with.

Also, Virtua Fighter 2 is another reminder that I have no idea what I'm doing whenever I play fighting games.

Get some normal composite cables asap. Virtua Fighter really isnt a good gauge for fighting game skill :p You have to really be on point, no matter the knowledge level in VF games imo. Not really the easiest 3D fighter to learn.

Yeah, that's probably going to be my first purchase, plus some more games.

Speaking of which, what games are considered both really cheap yet still pretty fun? I do have a list of games I want to buy but a lot of them tend to fall into the 25-50$ range or even worse.

jesus christ...yeah i was looking up stuff for a friend & saw all 4 discs of PDS (no case or manual) and shit went for around $300...what the fuck

i wanna say mine was like $230 CIB just earlier this year, off a forum post - same dude who did $150 for Snatcher, Shining Force CD & one of the PSX FF collections. i keep saying it, but branch out to some retro forums, you guys - there's deals to be had still. let these resellers, insta-collectors & other shmucks pay the stupid mark-up prices.

Yeah, forums are the best, I built a big part of my collection thanks to folks on GAF that were selling here at decent prices.

Wow at PDS too, I'm glad I got mine a few years ago for $190 complete with all the stuff (on Ebay!), only the first disc have a very few scratches, everything else is mint. Prices are going insane!

Yeah, though Burning Rangers price didn't change all that much since a year and a half from what I can see.

Paid mine for the big price, something around $180, at least it is MINT as FUCK! :D

swear to god, ebay dumps records after like 90 days i wanna say, but i know someone brought em to my attention in this very thread! it was in december but not like christmas day or anything, and not even like crazy BIN's...as i recall it was just nobody else really bid em up or something. might've been slightly more than $20 something but wasn't by much, shit was mind blowing to see (and kinda gave you hope that amazing deals could still be had on ebay once in a while haha)

I need to know if I'm having the definitve Johnny Bazookatone experience on my 3DO or if I should cop the Saturn release.
You joke but I actually know this one as well. :p

It's better on Saturn. The 3do version runs with an unlocked frame-rate meaning that it hits 60 fps when nothing is happening and drops straight to 30 (or lower) as soon as any action begins. It feels wildly inconsistent as a result.

Interestingly, if you run it on an emulator with over-clocking enabled you can hit 60 fps most of the time. It's just on a real 3do that it struggles.

It's 60 fps on Saturn and PSX, however. No idea how it runs on PC.

Any other esoteric comparisons you'd like? ;-)

Hey guys, if anyone is interested, I just found an unused universal modchip for the Saturn in my PC motherboard box.

I'll sell it for £15 inc shipping. UK only, but I may be able to ship to the US.

Got no use for it.

Oh, how about D, Theme Park, Super Wing Commander, Wing Commander III or Return Fire (I guess the last three I mentioned weren't on the Saturn though)?

...I actually genuinely like to play the best version of games even if the differences are minimal.

is this rare?

It nots rare I just can't find whole copies that i'd be satisfied with paying.

Honestly I don't see myself personally paying over 30 bucks for the game while I see people trying to sell the just the loose cd of it for 30+ when i've seen it as low as $15.

But this is the age we live in retro is in and prices UP

Like Teknoman said, the Saturn REALLY needs an composite cable. I was running mine off of an RF switch for the longest time and it was awful. Luckily, both Amazon and eBay sells composite and s-video cables at reasonable prices. I picked one up for around $8 with shipping a few years back.

I have found recently that Saturn games are very hard to come by in second hand shops. Folks price-gouge the hell out of Saturn games online. I've been trying to hunt down a copy of Die Hard Arcade for a few years now and most online auctions sell disc only.

Not that it concerns me (#TeamRGB) but about those $9 Saturn combo Composite / S-video cables... does it just output composite video through the S-video connection as well? I've heard about other 3rd party combo cables doing that with SNES.

I remember about a year ago the proper 1st party Saturn S-Video cables were selling for $60-$70+, lol.

Sadly, they do not. At least the one I purchased didn't.

Man I don't remember where I got my S-video cables or how much I paid, but I know it wasn't half of that. And it was within the last year, too.

(Also, anyone want an official RGB cable for $20 + shipping?)

I think you misunderstood the question.

I know hibachi got his s-video cable on rakuten for about $22 but ebay listings were thrice that.

Jesus. I remember paying $30 for CIB copies of Clockwork Knight 2 and Panzer Dragoon Zwei in the same auction (was really only after CK2, Zwei was merely a very fortunate bonus). Now it's that on its own, disc-only? Figures.

Sadly, they do not. At least the one I purchased didn't.
No, "sadly" would be if the S-Video cables did only output Composite. Then you'd be gaining jackshit for upgrading to said S-Video cable.
