500 USD PS4 that was even more powerful. Would that be better?

When I look at Driveclub and Uncharted 4 and The Order I really can't say I'm disappointed with the Ps4s power.
I'd even argue that the best looking games will be found on Ps4 and not on PC next year.

The CPU is clearly the weakest link of these new consoles. So that should be upgraded first. The GPU could also get a little bump to 2tf as well.

I'd take a more powerful GPU.

But I'm not even a graphics whore per se. I just want good games and I think these consoles are powerful enough.

I would have paid $500 for a beefier CPU/GPU, which would be my ceiling for a console. $100 over the life of a console is not much, imo. Most everyone else would disagree.

I want modular systems with upgradable hardware. If I had a $1000 option to guarantee that 1080p/ 60 fps I'd do it.

The majority of the target market doesn't give a crap about technical specs. They just want a new product with better graphics and an appealing price point. More CPU and GPU horsepower at $500 wouldn't have been as appealing to the majority of console gamers.

Those who really give a shit about the horsepower of their machine are going to be gaming on a PC. Why would Sony or Microsoft target those gamers? They are already satisfied with their gaming machines and aren't likely going to invest in a new product.

No. The Vita is as powerful as we need a handheld to be right now and nobody bought it or makes games for it anymore.

I like the PS4 the way it is. H

What do you mean by "better"? Better performance? Sure. But do you really think Sony could have gotten away with a another $500 console?

I had $500 budgeted for the PS4 when they announced it, so I would have been fine, but I don't know if $100 higher price point would have done Sony any favors when it came to sales numbers. $400 is probably about where they needed to be.

I'm already waiting on something to justify a future purchase of a PS4 as it is. Having made it more powerful wouldn't have gotten me to get one yet, either.

Buy a PC.

Isn't the point of a gaming console to be "simpler" to use with a low pricepoint?

This. And I'm glad the point of entry for pricing is lower as it means a larger install base and therefore publishers and developers are more likely to jump in to next gen, invest more money in more projects and take bigger risks.

$500 device with external power brick and the size of the Xbox One.

8 Jaguar CPU at 2.0 ghz
24 CUs at 1.0 ghz, 3.1 teraflops

8GB GDDR5 Ram
32mb Edram

Background OS CPU,
4GB of LPDDR3 OS ram.

No. none of that.

All I would've done is get the GPU running at a slightly higher clock speed to go from 1.84 TFLOPs shader performance to 2.0 TFLOPs (a nicer rounded number to boast about) left everything else the same, including the $399 price.

PS4 as it is probably could not have been engineered any better for the price and for when it came out.

Yes, I would have preferred that.

So better for me, not better for the AAA industry. I like those games so a cheaper barrier to entry is preferable.

$400 is kind of expensive as it is. No matter how powerful, it would have flopped. Anybody considering spending that kind of money would have been better off buying a PC.

I'm sure plenty of GAFers would have preferred that, but Sony made the right decision targeting the specs and pricepoint they did.

Just look at console sales in the US: Microsoft has fallen far behind despite being the favorite last-gen and arguably having a better first party lineup. Price had a lot to do with that.

The point of a gaming console is to play exclusives. If I can throw more money at it for better performance I'm going to do it.

I would have liked that, but I'm happy with the current PS4 and also a crazy enthusiast. Probably wouldn't be healthy for the system in the long run.

It's not so simple as "buy a PC." You can't play any of Sony's first party games on a PC and some may prefer the simplicity of a console.

You guys really need to stop saying that.

No questions asked.

People recommending PC's don't understand. I want Sony's first party and third party console exclusives with the best possible graphics.

No, $400 is a great price point for a console at launch. Why give price parity w/ Microsoft when you can undermine them and get a huge head start for this gen?
