Unreal Engine 4 Thread

Listening to the 4.3 features stream, World Composition editor (top-down view to position individual maps into a streaming world) sounds sick.

Anyway, here's a weird question: does anybody know if it's possible to bake static lightmap shadows onto a static mesh object that will later move? It's a weird situation, I know, but I have some huge moving objects that I want to keep static self-shadows as they slide around to save some performance.

I've noticed that if a static mesh object/component's mobility is set to not movable it will receive static shadows, so I was thinking about trying to set mobility after Begin Play. Gotta dig into C++ to do that though, Blueprint doesn't allow it. Not a good sign for the feasibility of this, lol.
I don't know about UE4, but in UE3 with the UDK, I thought the point of "static" meshes was that they were never supposed to move. Maybe that has changed, but you may run into weird inconsistencies if there is anything in the engine code that depends on static meshes really being static.

*edit* It sounds like Man has a good solution.

Is anyone actually tuning in every week for the podcasts? Have to say I enjoy them a lot by now and it's always a thing to look forward to.

Anyway, after the stream I checked out the one user project they had on the stream, Korath: The Witcher Saga Inspired Environment. Have to say it looks pretty awesome: http://krzysztofteper.com/korath.html

If you would chamfer those edges it would look allot better
Thanks for the advice. It did look too "boxy" without them.

This doesn't look like much but I finally baked my first normal map and ambient occlusion pass (everyone has to start somewhere).

Damn, I didn't even notice that. I'm using the same way as you to set the graphics details, but never thought about going out of fullscreen (or back into fullscreen) afterwards. I'm hoping they will fix this issue in a future version. But if you have a solution, I'd be happy to hear.

Have yet to figure it out.. had to pick up some work so haven't been able to get into it. But perhaps a actual graphic menu needs to be made. Its such a strange default.

So I bought a sub today. I haven't done anything with UED since the last UT and then I only did maps and some textures. I have no training or experience out side what I have learned from examples. I have a lot of spare time on my hands. I figured I would watch the tutorials and check out all the samples and hopefully learn something.

It's a cool thought to create my own game though.

The new lighting additions look dope. When I watched the stream I felt thirst so real. Hopefully I can enable the stuff easily in my crude tutorial map.

Skylight Global Illumination is a cool new feature but the bounce/indirect lighting is still baked so not the full Dynamic Global Illumination some of us are waiting for (hurry up Lionhead/Epic!).
edit: Not that we should hold out for it as it's on the wishlist/backlog currently. I think you can enable an early version with a console command but it's not part of the official features and probably won't be before early next year.

I have never worked with a engine but i just curious from you guys how is it working with UE4? Looking at how Epic is giving great support with all the tools, updates etc and the new business model anyone can make games now right? Seeing how bad Cryengine is in terms of tools, support etc. The difference is huge no less. Pretty cool things to see here!

Are there any new compiled demos anyone can play?

Like that cool little scifi hallway demo?

Nothin as impressive as the hallway demo. The last demos have been the racing game and the poker sample.

Someone asked if there will be new sample games with 4.3 and Lauren said they will have some 2d game (I think there is still one on the market place that hasn't been unlocked yet).

On the livestream 2 weeks ago I spotted this when they were opening a sample:

I wouldn't mind seeing the Infiltrator Demo being released to the public for example. I asked about that on the forums and got this from Ray Davis:

Yep! We're always building new samples and looking at content in our archives that would be valuable to make available to developers. Hopefully more to share on these efforts in the future.

Nothing clear but I'll keep on hoping :D.

I think it's pretty awesome. If you're interested just check out one of the over 100 video tutorials done by Epic themself. There also tons of community projects and so on. Checking the work in progress/released section on the forums can also be pretty interesting since there are a lot of crazy projects going on.

Also, if you're in the US, Epic will be traveling the west coast: https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/ue4-west-coast-dev-tour-announced

I'm sure I heard them say somewhere it will be released eventually. It was some stream when they talked about Elemental, so they mentioned they plan to release Infiltrator too.

Hey everyone,

I was wondering how to open the console in an UE4 demo? I tried "~" but it does nothing and I also tried "^" but no success either. It's the cave demo so it should work. I'm using a QWERTZ DE-keyboard so it might be different but I tried every key once and the console just won't open :s

So I've been attempting to wrap my head around Blueprint a bit more and programming in general since I'm going back to school for it. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I can spawn a pre-made room onto a location when I walk into a door. Anyone have any ideas how I could achieve that?

Been playing this table top game called Betrayal and it gave me some cool ideas for a stealth co-op horror game that turns into a vs match half way through.

I subscribed to UE4 a couple of weeks ago now, and I'm loving it. I've never done anything like this and know nothing about programming, I come from an art/animation background. Pretty excited at the possibilities!

Anyway, I have a q for anyone that is familiar with importing/exporting animations between UE4 and the UE4's ART plug-in for Maya:

After saving an animation through the ART plug-in as an .fbx and closing down Maya for the night, I come back to it a day later and re-import the same animation, but all of my main key-frames are now lost in key frames set at every frame. I'm guessing this is because you have to import it as mocap data? Is there anyway around this, allowing you to load up an animation, keeping your original key-frames intact? (if I haven't described this well enough I can update with pics later at home.)

Also, another q: Sometimes when I import an animation back into ART/Maya the curves for some of my rotation attributes in the graph editor are now locked in straight angles (they were nice and smooth spline tangents at the time of saving), and I can't smooth out the curve in any way for some reason. :/ What's going on here? It's always just the rotation attributes too.

EDIT: Think I might have solved both issues by not using "Import/Export FBX" at all, and instead using "Import/Export Anim" exclusively from the start. You'll hear from me again if it doesn't. :p

I remember seeing this during my hunt for tutorials. It might not be exactly what you're after, but it might give you an idea anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yZVTsZ5iK8

Well since this is my first project ever I think I might just not go the random generation route and just make a few pre made maps with random rules. Like If some players find some items and walk into X room then event Y gets triggered and player 3 becomes the traitor and starts hunting everyone.

Also I think having it premade I should be able to add a lot more atmosphere into it.

Seems like the official release of 4.3 is this week according to Twitter:

"Unreal Engine ‏@UnrealEngine 15m
Hundreds of improvements coming in 4.3 this week. The release notes for this massive release are a must-read."

The source-branch has been available for a couple of weeks now.

Time warp (Oculus Rift) is coming with 4.4 in hopefully not too long. Particle performance boost as well (25%+).

Not a good game, but Daylight uses it for example.
Daylight was also using a very early version of UE4.

Also give it some time. Games don't just magically finish. UE4 really has been in wide use since GDC 2014, which selected use before that.

I don't know if it has to do with your keyboard, but did you try ` (the backtick)? I found this: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/17041/ue4-console-commands-list.html

exciting shit

I mean, the obvious standout is DK2 support, for me, but there seems to be so much cool shit in this update. I want to play with all of it.

Time warping is included with 4.3! I'm so happy.
How is the latency? I thought I had read someone trying time warp on a different engine and the end result was actually worse latency (not sure about visual quality).

I'm hoping the DK2 built-in latency tester works for all applications so people do not have to make their own code support it.

The tutorials are exceedingly helpful. And blueprint is legendary.

D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die
WARMACHINE: Tactics (moved from UE3 to 4)

and there is also a few of studios that have licensed it for unannounced games like
Dontnod Entertainment (Remember Me)
Ninja Theory (DmC, Enslaved)
Sumo Digital (Sonic & All-Stars Racing, LittleBigPlanet 3)
Square Enix (actually one of the first announced licensees announced remains to be seen what for tho)

And also a bunch of Korean and Chinese MMOs. Really adoption is looking pretty good so far.

To follow up on this, people asked for a release date on the stream today. They just reconfirmed that they are working on releasing it, but they don't have a set release date yet.

Oh good LORD their Spline component is a total god send to me....<3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I've been building a game in Unity with a friend but he's been busy but with this, I just might try and do this solo in UE4...

Epic just gave me a free month of Unreal Engine 4.. uh.. nice.

"We made a mistake that affected your subscription and apologize for this. On August 4th we accidentally cancelled your PayPal payment subscription to UE4.
We are working with PayPal on reversing the cancellation, and hope we are able to do so without any action on your end. However, we’ll let you know if you need to take any manual steps to restore your subscription.
Your access to UE4 has not been affected and we are providing you with a free month of access as a token of our appreciation for sticking with us."

Pretty cool - a free month is pretty damn nice lol.
