Heavily criticized games that you really enjoy

Fuel. The open-world post-apocalyptic racing game.
I spent 80 hours two weeks straight on it. I really enjoyed. I enjoyed riding from point A to point B. The race were cool and exciting for the most part.

Too bad that now, because of GFWL, I won't be able to pick it up again in the future. Unless somebody, maybe a fan, out there, decide to patch it for Steam.

Hell yeah, 127 hours played on Steam. Unlocked every vehicle, vista, livery, everything, and then my hard drive died and I had to start over. I'd probably still roam around in that massive open world while listening to podcasts or music if that hadn't happened.

I truly don't get the hate Dark Souls 2 got. It made it sound like it was a complete failure and a crap game. I find it wonderful and I like it and got more into than with DeS and DaS1.

On the opposite spectrum I don't anyone that LOVES Watch_Dogs, Such a dissapointment. I am not saying it can't be enjoyable, but nothing fresh or worthwhile to be loved. To me it's as generic a game as Ubisoft has made. The Kotaku review and the joke Ubisoft the game review were to real to ignore. I just quitted the game. In some people's defence they may have not played enough Ubisoft games to feel this hate.

I don't mind AC or Farcry since I think they have both setting and characters that add a lot to the series even if they have very similar progression mechanincs, but in WD it just felt lazy, taped over with no care. A convoluted, boring, generic mess. And that makes me sad.

Both of these games will probably run you less than 10 bucks a pop used. In the summer desert of no games, these will for sure get you through if you are looking for something to play so long as you view them with an open mind...and realize you really are playing them for "concept" rather than a polished AAA experience.

They both have something special about them, among a lot of sub-par things.

Im jealous you can play these games for the first time! Im looking for stuff to play until the fall onslaught begins.

Actually Nier I've played, and I agree about it, really enjoyed it. :)

Morfeo

The Chuck Norris of Peace
Metroid Other M for me, I had a great time with that game and think its actually among the best games of last gen. I also think the modern Zelda-games (TP and SS) gets waaaay too much hate considering their quality - those are both amazing.

Excite Truck was a lot of fun and I didnt know KI Gold was heavily criticized. I remember playing it at the arcades and it being pretty popular there... But then again, all I payed much attention to was gamepro and PCgamer.

Metroid : Other M. I really don't get the criticism, not for the story, not for the characterization, not for the gameplay. Even if the games is a few notches below Prime and Super, is still a superb game.

The only reason I have come to accept for such harsh treatment for the game are the developer and the platform it was released on. Salty, salty fellows.

This and Sonic Unleashed (360/PS3). Sonic Unleashed was just immediately hated because werehog look dumb. The core day Sonic gameplay is superb, visuals and sound are great, and the world has a pixar charm to it. The Werehog stages weren't something I'd actively go back to, but they weren't bad (excluding the constantly playing and ear grating battle tune).

Legend of the Dragoon is probably the big one. I loved that game and was shocked to see it wasn't regarded very highly on the internet. Of course it has been a long time since I played it so I have no idea how much nostalgia is effecting my judgement. A much more recent one would be SWTOR I subbed to that game for a few months and enjoyed playing it. Every once in a while I still get the urge to sub again and play some more classes.

I thought Excite Truck was great, AFAIK it didn't get much criticism tho so it doesn't really fit here.

Maybe it depends on the class you play as (I was a Marksman) but I totally loved HGL. The loot in it was leagues better than games like Borderlands and it lets you use lots of active skills too, unlike Borderlands. Weapons were fairly different (e.g. I was using a napalm rocket launcher for most of the game with a plasma gun as a sidearm) and could be upgraded so you didn't have to throw them away every time you get a higher level one. You can upgrade the base stats of the weapon AND you can stick attachments on them (which have full loot stats) to tweak them for their role (I used that to tune my plasma gun for shield piercing) or just get a huge pile of randomly proccing effects.

EDIT: Thinking about it some more maybe it was that I play games like this solo, I heard that HGL's online setup was pretty bad but I never used it. Meanwhile Borderlands has a more modern coop mode but the gameplay is WAAAAAAY shallower for a single person. Can't think why else Borderlands gets so much praise while HGL is almost universally reviled, both are repetitive and grindy but HGL has more variety in enemies and weapons.

Most Definitely.

Tomb Raider 2013 - Objectively lots of improvements to the Genre. Very polished game.

Resident Evil 6 - Superb graphics and action (not a Survival Horror series anymore people). Online Co-op doesn't get much better and alone makes this game great. Ada Wong.

Final Fantasy XIII - Soooooo much hate but has the same type of story and characters as any other FF. People just don't look at it objectively. Great Battle system. Great graphics. Great FMVs which are absent these days. Felt like FF through and through.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best in the series and the sequel to an awful game*. Come at me.

* 3 is great too though, obviously.

Sonic Unleashed is awesome. I got the Platinum for that game. The action sections are solid too, just not what people wanted.

It has one of, if not the best soundtrack in the series.

It actually nailed exactly how extra characters and humans should be handled and designed in the Sonic universe.

Is it as good as Origins? of course not, but does it deserve all the hate it gets? nope. I've played through it a few times now, something i wouldn't do if it was a bad game

Ya, I liked a lot of things in DA2. Was def enjoyable, even if it was a mess, and if you are a fan of the Dragon Age setting, it still is a must play, imo.

I think Skyward Sword is pretty fantastic, I'd put it in my top 2 Zelda games and my top 5 games of the last generation. I've seen a ton of hate for it on here and many other places.

Maybe not top 2 for me, but I thought it was fantastic. A very slow start but even with some of the backtracking, I thought mid to late game paced very well.

My friends and I played a lot of Socom 4 using the Move controllers and the Sharpshooter in the online coop mode, in particular. Was really fun for a couple years off an on until Sony prematurely shut the servers down. Bastards.

Quest 64.

It was blazing new ground and damn near the only RPG on the system, with a combat system never before seen. Yes, balance was wack as hell, but the elements and attacks were so cool, and it felt so different since you were really casting and aiming the spells in 3D space, not just causing a sprite to overlay the screen and cause damage.

Speaking personally, my only major problems with the game were the high encounter rate and the fact that water and earth are really the only proper choices of elements. Water has healing (extremely vital) and earth just plain does the most damage, so while there's some cool Wind abilities, there's little reason to level fire or wind. But it still had lots of great ideas, even if not executed so well. Didn't mind the story. I think people over-criticize RPGs that don't try to be Final Fantasy with massive stories.

How long ago did you play Quest 64? It was not a good game back then and it aged terribly.

You ever noticed how similar the battle themes for Q64 and FFVII start?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Maybe it's because I wasn't expecting much and I haven't played a TMNT game in nearly a decade, but I quite enjoyed it. The camera would get screwed up occasionally, the cutscenes were hideous, and the turtles weren't as fast/responsive as I wanted them to be, but it was a nice simple beat-em-up. Each turtle had a different fighting style, you could switch between each of them dynamically, set up combo attacks, had rpg-light leveling/skill system, and even an alternate arcade game that could be played from a side-scrolling perspective.

You can even choose alternate skins to get the original comic cover red bandana version of all of the turtles. COME ON!

Plus, I always preferred the more animalistic/disproportional versions of the turtles rather than the standard humanoid body shape.

This, exactly. I love LBP. Never understood the complaints about the controls.

Same, it took me no time at all to get used to the "floaty" jumps. It just feels like people are asking for every platform game to control like Mario. The only compliant I had about LBP controls was the plane switching which sometimes spazzed out.

Dragon's Dogma.

I know the storytelling sucks, the difficulty is really lopsided, and monsters are basically HP sponges.

But that sense of heading out into the countryside looking for adventure, no other game has quite captured that feeling for me.

I second Dragon's Dogma.

Man, I remember my lower levels, when I was just getting up the courage to set out at night. Zombies everywhere. My party shouting orders. Spells lighting up the darkness. Limping back to town.

I feel about Dragon's Dogma what a lot of people feel about Dark Souls--it just ruined me for other action RPGs.

Hellgate: London was pretty fun, though it did have a lot of issues

I liked Dragon Age 2 a lot the first time around, although a second runthrough ruins the illusion that any of your choices actually matter.

OH I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT SENGOKU BASARA!

Dude that game is so much fun and it's got a pretty deep combat system too, it almost feels like DMC3 x Dynasty Warriors but man everyone seems to hate it ;_:

I'm quite fond of Suikoden 4 and Grandia Xtreme. Both are the red-headed stepchildren of their respective franchises.

Have you played a Bioware game before? None of them matter.

Alpha Protocol? You bet you azz your choices matter.

GTA IV

I really enjoyed my 1st playthrough. Great representation of modern NY. Maybe it's because i'm a NYer but I really enjoyed it and don't get all the hate.
This is me, word for word except not getting the hate. I can understand why but some people hate it too much. I play it pretty much everyday cause I love the city and radio.

Call of duty, only problem with it is the community.

I think I still have my save file of my game. I almost had everything unlocked. I had a couple of race to do but this one near the end was kicking my ass more than once. There was this collectable on top of a mountain range in the sounth-east (if I remember) that I never got to drive to... I spent hours trying to get it.

I also liked to listen to music a lot when playing the game.

Fun times.

The original Neptunia not so much, but mk2 was excellent. Haven't played V yet but from what I've heard I'm expecting similar greatness.

V is better IMO. Combat is a bit improved, no grinding hits to activate CPU, the story doesn't take FOUR CHAPTERS to get going, though you do get the last character fairly late in the story. And I find the "adults" less annoying than the "kids", Nepgear's inferiority complex gets annoying after a while.

I haven't played 1. Going to get ReBirth maybe, if Fairy Fencer F doesn't burn me out on the IF style combat.

I will say the SNES port of DOOM.
DOOM is my favorite game and the SNES port was my introduction to the series. Of course I've played the superior versions since then, but I thought the SNES port got more hate than it deserved.

I remember enjoying Other M from a gameplay perspective. Yes, the story is garbage and the whole concept of not being able to use stuff until Adam authroizes it is terrible on a number of levels, but the combat is fun and I enjoyed exploring the ship.

It's a shame the story is so bad because it eclipses the fact that the game by itself is totally fine.

The Dynasty Warriors series. Yes, I acknowledge that they are overtly repetitive with some truly brain-dead A.I., but there is just this weird appeal of leveling up your characters and weapons while you mow down hundreds of foes in seconds.

I'm kind of surprised noone has copied or that koei hasn't improved these more over time. I don't buy every year, but there is something real satisfying about being a one man wrecking machine.... there's other games that make you a badass, but none to this scale which is too bad.
